Interesting statistic! Can you write a few more articles this week?? Like...ummmm, how many games BYU has won, at Utah, in the month of September,, with a senior QB? Or...how many games BYU has won when playing at night and when the date falls on an even date! Or how many games BYU has won when the game is played on a day that has an R in it?

Or you could just write an article about Utah cuz they lead the series:
55-34-4...60% winning percentage
Or that in the most recent 10 games, Utah is
7-3...70% winning percentage

Oh wait, the Cougar fans need another strange superstition to noodle around...

Keep writing for this perenial national champion, Heisman producer fan base!!! They love this stuff...

Thanks Jeff...

One thing is for sure......Riley was truly plugged in to divine inspiration to transfer to BYU because had he stayed at Utah State he would be side lined behind Chuckie Keaton. Good luck against Utah and I do hope the game is exciting and fun for all.

You're in good company, Riley Nelson. 10 out of 11. With Max Hall (graduate assistant working with the QBs) and OC Brandon Doman to guide you, we have full confidence that you will give it your all. From the looks of last week, we also have Lark and Hill in the wings! I'm sure that determination as well as poise will wrap around our Cougs as they take the field. See BLUE and see victory!

Go BYU! Go Cougars!

Nelson will be the next Kevin F., I believe Utah wins for the following reasons:

1. Utah's great defensive line against BYU'S weak offensive line. Lark better be ready he will play.
2. Utah will be highly motivated. Loss at Utah State and comments from Van Noy and Hoffman.
3. BYU still has most of their defense that quit last year in Provo, if things start going bad they will quit again.
4. The laast time Utah had so many injuries. The reserves led by Brett Ratliff smoked BYU. John White's repalcement, if he doesn't play, runs wild.
5. Jon Hayes is better than Jordan Wynn.

It will be close for awhile but turnovers from BYU will once again be the difference. Utah 27 BYU 14.

Wow, Utah football has come a long, long way for someone from BYU to use the words, "very good, quality opponent" when referencing Utah.

Riley. We wish you the best of success. I strongly hope you don't call for the QB draw. How many QB's get injured during a tackle? I think it is safe to say that ALL injured QB's do so when being tackled and we don't need that risk when there are so many good alternatives you have. Gone are the days of the Anae predictable 4 plays. I think you improve with each game and like you said, I hope that the last seven years bring good fortunes your way. I hope your offensive line comes to the game ready to play hard every down. You just may need them. Good luck COUGS!

Off topic but have you seen that Notre Dame is joining ACC in all sports except football but agreed to play 5 ACC opponents per year in football? that could mean trouble for the BYU/ND series.

Re: fan of all sports.

Reasons I think BYU will win
1. BYU's top 10 defense vs Utah's weak offensive line
2. Byu will be highly motivated. Last year's blow out loss has been playing in the locker room all week.
3. Utah still has their special teams that blew the game last week.
4. Like the article says that last time BYU had a senior QB start vs Utah they won.
5. Riley is the same breed of quarter back that beat you last week, with better options around him.

@southern Utah Couger,

Not so fast. Riley is no way even close to the same caliber or breed as Chuckie Keaton. The ranking of QB's in state would be

1 Keaton USU
2 Sorenson SUU
3 Hayes, UTAH
4 tie between Hoke, Weber and Nelson BYU

I would say that "20 rows" into the stands would be pushing it:)

Love those crazy stats that really don't mean a thing too. 7 out of 10 and 292 to 187 in points scored over the last 10 years of the rivalry says everything. That is a difference of over 100 points! Now that 's a stat to remember.

Go Utes!

I totally agree the Riley is not as good as those other quarterbacks, even as a Cougar fan. What I meant by same breed is that they are both mobile, atheltic, running QBs. In the USU game the Utes had a hard time handling Keeton's mobility, either from the option or his throwing outside the pocket.

Utah’s Season Comes Down to Rivalry Game (Again). After last season where the mighty Utes had a losing record in the Pac 12 and lost a sure bid to go to the Pac 12 championship game by losing at home to lowly Colorado, who had not won an away game in 4 years, the only bright spot of the season for the mighty Utes was beating BYU who had no quarterback at the helm and a rookie O-Coordinator who failed to recognize that early.

The Utes should be careful about ending a rivalry game that has the potential to save their season every year for their fan base even when the Utes pull a “no show” for most of the season. Most Ute fans with their new found Pac-12 Arrogance, act like last season was a success. However, Anyone who matter’s in the National scene see the Utes first season in the Pac-12 as one of the most disappointing collaspses of a football program in history, given the stakes for a potential Rose Bowl birth.

I've said all summer that, after watching last year's game a couple of times, I don't see how BYU doesn't win by 14 or more. I'm sticking by that prediction.

The Utes secondary wasn't all that great last year (Cody and Ross alone combined for almost 200 yards receiving last year) and without Rowe and Blechen, BYU's WR's and TE's should have a field day.

The O Line for Utah is obviously suspect. John White IV had 46 yards rushing going in to the 4th quarter last year, then had 3 rushes for 107 yards in the 4th after BYU's D cashed it in. If he even plays this Saturday, BYU's D should be able to shut him down.

Jon Hayes is not a very good QB. He went 12-26 against USU for 154 yards, with one solid TD drive. Their only other TD came on a gimmick play, and Hayes had about 3 passes that should've been picked off. With BYU's improved pass rush and the U's issues on O-line, I don't see Hayes throwing for more than 150 yards.

The Utes better hope that BYU is not as eager to turn their backs on the Utes. Because once BYU goes away, the Utes won’t even be relevant in state, let alone their new found irrelevance in the Pac-12.

Finally, BYU's biggest weakness this year has been the O-line, specifically the interior rushing. Utah's team is basically their D-line, so that plays into Utah's strength, and is the only thing I can think of that would allow Utah to keep it close.

Having said that, BYU's pass protection and blitz pickup has been solid the last two games, as has been running outside of the tackles. Utah's LB's are mediocre, and don't have a ton of speed, so option attacks and pitches to the outside should work fairly well, as USU showed last Friday.

I want Riley to throw the ball. I think this perception of him being a poor passer has come from the media and the idea that he's just a "scrambler". When he gets his feet set, he can deliver the ball. He's also accurate on roll-outs. He was on pace for almost 500 yards passing against Weber St (I know, I know, Weber's an FCS school, but still, 250 yards passing in a half is pretty solid).

I think Riley goes for 300+ yards and Cougs wins 35-13.

People talk about how Utah will come out with a chip on their shoulder and some serious attitude. I think BYU will come out even more so. They've had this game circled for a year, and they'll be gunning for the Utes. I know K Whitt does a great job of prepping his guys for this game and that the Utes may somehow find a way to keep it close, or even win this game.

I just don't see it happening, and I am more than willing to come on here and eat crow if it does. I just think Utah's doesn't have enough talent on the offensive side of the ball to get it done.

Now, if BYU has another 7 turnover implosion, I might be singing a different tune :) However, I think Nelson goes for 300+ yards passing, BYU rushes for 100 more, and the Cougs win 35-13.

Go Cougars!

Hopefully after this weekend the headline would need to be changed to "BYU's senior quarterbacks have won 10 of last 12 vs. Utah". Go Utes!

Note to Reilly Nelson: If you do beat Utah (and that will be tough to do), please have the following speech memorized so that if their fans pour beer on your Mom you won't deviate from the script: "It was a great win against a great team. We appreciate the hospitality and class shown by Utah. They have a great place, a great administration and great fans." Then if you beat Utah, you'll go down in history as a great QB. Hope you do.

The fact is this. byU's season last year and every season until they get into a big boy conference, will be over after they lose one game.

Unfortunately for byU "fans" that will be this Saturday.

Go Utes!
