Thought a PAC 12 team would be tougher. Great defense.

Kingsport, TN

Great game against a PAC 12 team. However, the whole "national tv audience" thing is a bit overplayed. Kick off wasn't until about 10:30 pm eastern time.... maybe they DVR'd it.

If the east coast, or even Texas, saw the first half, they got their monies worth.

If they stayed past that, unless they were ardent BYU fans...they fell asleep on the couch. I think we will need to develop a killer instinct by the third game.

Finally we got to see those TE's making big plays - good game.

Cody Hoffman might as well take a rest next week facing Weber St and be ready for utah and pac12 zebras.

Love our D's but wow, 103 yard penalty, average 10 yard/call on our D's? Need to tone down a little like but heading and some little silly stuff.

What no part on Apo on this article? We need him with more touches.

Agreed Y Dad. Once again BYU seemed to take their foot off the gas in the second half. We are not an option running team & spent too much time trying to run outside. If bronco wants to milk the clock in the second half of games he needs to develop an inside rushing attack. I was a little disappointed in the feeble effort the offense gave on the second half, in particular the rushing attack

Great game by Friel, he caught everything that came to him and reminded me somewhat of Andrew George, very powerful. It was great to have the TE back

I don't think Alisa is an every down back and we need to get Foote more carries along with Williams, Pritchard and Hine. Against WSU we should have been able to run the ball better, especially in the 2nd half. Great start to finish effort by the defense.

One thing that is odd, Riley seems to be able to find Hoffman with ease but can't do the same with Apo. It didn't seen like he looked Ross's way much at all, especially after Hoff left the game.

PAC12 zebras were definitely throwing the nylon with abandon in this game - - could have thrown it more too. Although the blue and white Cougs didn't get a ton of pressure rusing 3 and dropping the rest, the Wazzou linemen could have been flagged with holding many times.

In the end, no bearing on the outcome but in a closer game (like we will have on Sept. 15) these guys need to be more consistent.

The refs were not that bad. The only difference in calls was a couple of unsportsmanlike penalties on BYU. WSU had their only TD called back so even bringing up refs is not worth the argument.

I attended the game and arrived at the end of the first quarter after attending the Utah game. I am a loyal Ute fan and my sister went ahead and married one of the graduate assistants at BYU. We may have to disown her as she is a Ute. Her kids will probably end up confused. The fans were really into it in the 2nd quarter. I could tell a lot of the fans were sleepy by the end of the 3rd quarter as it got quieter. The student section was the loudest section by far. I was in the BYU family members section. I was wearing my Utah hat but covered up my red shirt. I had one lady told me that I didn't belong but the others were very nice. While leaving the stadium, I had quite a few "Utes suck" heckles. Traffic flows better in SLC than Provo after games.

Glad both teams did so well.

Gotta love this defense. Amazing. Bronco is the real deal as a DC. Doman is not on a par with Bronco as OC. But he'll learn, methinks. But with this defense, BYU could be really good this year.

I like what I saw in this first game, except for one thing, and that is Riley Nelson should be a QUARTERBACK not a RUNNING BACK. If he wants to run the ball then have someone else play quarterback. Overall, seems like a better team than last year's. Beat Boise State and you should be fine for the rest of the schedule. GO COUGARS!!!

I am pleased with the results of the game. There is lots of room for improvement and and I see lots potential for good showings in tough games. But I'm still holding out for the next 3 games to learn if last night was a fluke or the makings of a good season. Pac 12 officials have NOT been cleaned up, as their leader claims. They are as dirty as ever. Some penalties were legitimate, and any penalty against WSU was a huge surprise given the joke some calls were against BYU. Riley needs to run the ball ONLY when other options are exhausted. But the threat is always there. I expected more rushers and more receivers, so Doman's offense is about 20% of what was promised. Keep working hard BYU. I'm hoping you can deliver. BTW, Leach's team delivered about 5% of what we all expected.

Nice win. Looked like a fun time in the stands. I too thought WSU would be tougher.

Cottonwood Heights, UT

Nice game cougs... I have to admit, that defense looked awesome. If Nelson keeps playing as efficiently as he did and the D continues to hit and tackle like they did, well, this team could do some damage.
Just an honest take from a Ute fan.
By the way, Doman called a great game and Friel looked extremely good. Lots to be happy about in happy valley.

Salt Lake City, UT

Thanks for the honest assessment motorbike.

Utah looked pretty good too, although it's hard to say just how effective Wynn is going to be against stiffer defensive pressure.

Utah State should be a better guage for the Utes, while Weber State, should be an interesting test of the Cougars to get more experience for their younger players.

September 15th is going to be a very interesting game for both sides.

Houston, TX

BYU has a tight end this year! Wow, this will make a huge difference. Good to see we can move the chains. I think our offense will still be the weakness this year. I like Riley, but I want a real QB who can pick apart a defense with his arm. He struggles bad with the deep ball which hurts us when we try to stretch the field vertically.I hope Riley can get the job done, but if he gets hurt and tayson has to come in....well I won't be disappointed!

Go Cougs

A very limited national audience with almost 10,000 empty seats at LES. Lots of room for improvement.

Salt Lake City, UT

Bronco was not trying to run up the score against Mike Leach. BYU, too, could have easily scored 40 points. Nice call Doman and company.

Provo, UT

@ResoluteVoice "A very limited national audience with almost 10,000 empty seats at LES."

Lol, really? Announced attendance was 57,000+, 4K less than capacity. Not sure where you're getting '10,000 empty seats' from. I was there, and most of the stadium was filled in, except upper corners of the stands. I'd say that's a great turn-out for a weekday, late-night game.

And very limited national audience? Seriously? Limited national audience is Utah playing on the 'national PAC 12 Network' that Ute fans in Utah can't even watch.

BYU played on ESPN as part of a double-header opening the college football season. That's a GREAT national audience.

Go Cougars!

In your dreams.

I'm sure ESPN made a bundle on this and the ratings were superb.

Contrasting to a mini-stadium and a half-baked sports network that many local in-state fans could not get.

And let's be clear, the 'national' version of the PAC 12 Network is as rare as the infamous 'snail darter'.

"When placed in the record books, the Cougar defense did not allow Leach's offense in the end zone and led BYU to a 30-6 victory." -- DH

True, but reality is the Cougars beat themselves.

A TD called back due to holding penalty.
A 46 reception at the one called back due to holding.
2 TOs in the red zone.
