Bravo Neil.

I assume that you are not running for office, because those that control the party would have already run you out. Just ask Jon Huntsman.

The GOP has been taken over by the far right. I am not saying that the GOP is now far right. I think that the party is still moderately right.

But, the voices that are heard are increasingly moving right. The moderate voices are silenced.

Today, those that spew the most vitriol, get the headlines. At least on the right.

Palin is beloved. Why? Cause she demonizes the dems. Not over policy, but with personal attacks. Otherwise, she has absolutely no substance. But they LOVE her.
Joe "you lie" wilsons campaign coffers swell. Why?
And the Obama Birth Certificate issue? It is (or should be) embarrassing to all Republicans.

Instead, Trump and Sheriff Joe are celebrated and given a spot at the convention.

Logical, reasonable people like Olympia Snow are no longer wanted in the party.

And people like her are exactly what the party needs.

I will still cast some of my votes to the GOP, but wouldn't want anyone to know.

Wonderful letter, Mr. Thomas. I think most of us are sick of the personal attacks, but unfortunately don't recognize them when our own party is doing it. And unfortunately, for a segment of the undecided public, the attacks work to sway opinion.

I wonder how long it will take for this message board to descend into its daily ritual of personal attacks.

I keep asking Romney supporters to give me affirmative reasons to support him. They never do. And Romney himself has not done so. He refuses to say what he stands for, what he will do, or offer any concrete proposals. As a result, I cannot support a candidate who hired the same advisors as those who served the last president and gave us the economic mess and two wars. Why would I want to do it all over again? No thanks.

An excellent and thoughtful letter. I'm on the Democratic side, but I agree completely.

One of the most important steps in getting personal attacks buried would be to bury the terrible Citizens United decision. Based on what little I've seen on TV (I hardly ever watch) it appears that the vast majority of those attack ads on both sides are funded by SuperPACs.

Excellent letter. We have two upstanding, decent, moral men running for President. They disagree on policy. Let's keep the focus there.

There is no responsibility for organizations or individuals who create advertisements which are blatantly untrue.

There ought to be some form of responsibility for those who create the misleading advertisements.

I think both Obama and Romney are playing a very dirty game. I think if you would get to know either one of them they are probably pretty likeable. So why do they do it? It works, the dirty game making promises to interest groups and going negative is what each side does to get elected. They justify it as being necessary so they can do get whatever it is they really want to do.

I just have come to the conclusion I like what one side does in office more than what the other side says they will do in office but never actually does.

My opinion is we don't need a bigger military or any more wars. Guess who I will vote for.

Always fascinating to see who claims to be a "mainstream conservative republican" on these boards, and then goes spouting off all kinds of rants and accusations against "mainstream conservative republicans"! Really makes me question the sincerity of the claims being made. Of course, if I were anything other then a "mainstream conservative republican", I would be to embarrassed of myself to admit it, so I would run for cover by claiming to be a "mainstream conservative republican" just like Mr Thomas! Apparently the only issues in this campaign are the disastrous economic policies of the current president, and then all the scads of mean-spirited, "lying", partisan republican politicians and their ridicules over the top accusations!

Didn't take long for a personal attack instead of an actual rebuttal, this too has become the norm.

I don't believe most of the dirty attacks are coming from either of the candidates themselves.

Aren't the vast majority of them from anonymously funded SuperPACS that were created and enhanced by the terrible decision in Citizens United?
