"Cornerback is the toughest position to recruit at BYU"

Interesting. I've said similar things and I get criticized when I do.

byu does not have the "athletes" needed to be a true national title contender like Utah, Alabama, Texas, and USC. Why do I include Utah? By virtue of having 2 undefeated seasons and BEATING the likes of Alabama along the way - we've proven we have the athletes and coaching staff to be the best in the nation.

We know what when you have a football team, winning games is #1.

This is another reason byu is not and will never be a true national title contender.

When was the last time you heard someone like Saban, Whittinghman, Stoops, or Spurrier say winning football games was the 6th most important thing? Never

I applaud byu for sticking to what they believe in.

but byu fans need to wake up and smell reality - your program is incompatible with being a true national power. So stop acting like you are.

You are a great WAC team like Utah state, and that is all you will ever be.

I wonder if byu fans will rip apart the writer as they rip apart me when I say very similar things.

byu does not have athletes like BCS teams.

Utah 32
byu 10
riley 4 turnovers.

If byu wins I won't post for a year and I'll sing the byu fight song and post it on youtube

I'll be posting all year

BYU has the athletes to beat 10-loss teams, unlike that pretender on the hill.

Re: Chris B

The author never said that BYU is a bunch of "church boys" and has "no athletes" along with most of the other completely ridiculous things you usually say. He said that it is a tough position to recruit. There's a difference between him saying it is a tough position to recruit and you saying that BYU's football team has zero athletic ability. Just because BYU doesn't have the same team speed as Florida or Texas doesn't mean that BYU is an unathletic football team. I guarantee that at least 3/4's of BYUs players (wide receivers, defensive backs, running backs, linebackers, and tight ends) run faster, jump higher, and would out "weight-room" 9/10s of the Utah "fans" that post the same type of things on our articles DAILY. So the talk about "non athletic ability" really needs to stop.

Why do you feel the need to spout out negativity towards BYU? This article is saying Johnson is improving..I didn't remember reading anything about how irrelevant BYU is, or how Utah is somehow a perennial powerhouse, worthy of the national championship. Please stop infesting BYU boards with needless negativity. Your comments reek of hypocrisy. National polls somehow don't prove national relevance to you, so I'm not going to say how the nation thought BYU was worth a Top 25 finish, and Utah wasn't...oh wait..I just did..

I'm not even going to delve into the myriad grammatical errors your "thoughtful comments" have. Try to use more "thought" please.

"BYU has the athletes to beat 10-loss teams, unlike that pretender on the hill".

BYU's athletes just can't beat Utah or anyone good for that matter.

Wow - you lucked out against a BCS team. Wow.

I can think of a team with at least 1 undefeated season, a National Championship, and has beaten the likes of Miami, SMU (Pony Express when they were a national power house), Oklahoma, Michigan, Oregon, UCLA, Washington, etc., and a little bunch from Utah - get the picture?? Crickets.

Utah does not have the "athletes" needed to be a true national title contender like Northern Colorado, Alabama, Texas, and USC.

Texas 17-BYU 16. On Texas home field? Utah would have been crushed!

The Utes lucked out with Alabama, but would have lost to Oklahoma.

Go Utes! Beat the 0-11 Northern Colorado team. Ha Ha!

"Texas 17-BYU 16. On Texas home field? Utah would have been crushed!"

Yeah, and BYU would have got crushed by USC in LA. USC was a much better team last year than Texas was.

"The Utes lucked out with Alabama, but would have lost to Oklahoma".

The cougies lucked out with Oklahoma, but would have lost to Alabama. See I can do that too!

Go Cougies! Beat the 5-6 Weber State Wildcats. HaHa!

Gotta love cougie fans! They forget they play an FCS team too!

Bleed Crimson,
And Utah fans seem forget that BYU has had more than its fair share of signature wins as well.

I am excited for this year's team. Excited and cautiously optimistic. It's relatively quiet in Provo this year and that's a good sign. There will be some good chemistry on this team which translates into wins. The secondary is going to be tough this year. The defense may be the best we have seen at BYU top to bottom in quite some time; maybe back as far as when Omar Morgan played. They have the pieces, now let's just see if they can put it all together.

How many times have we heard this before? BYU has never had a decent corner and it won't start now.

@54-10

You are just trying to be confrontational as you know that isn't true. It does make you appear to be foolish however.

"BYU would have got crushed by USC in LA."

Great grammar!

Just like Utah 2011, BYU 2003 (4-8) was only down 3 points at USC with 4 minutes left in the game.

The difference:

BYU 2003 was THE WORST BYU team in the last half century, yet the Cougars were able to put a scare into the eventual National Champions. If BYU 2003 could push the eventual national champion Trojans, there's no guarantee that BYU 2011 would have been crushed by the Trojans. BYU wasn't crushed by another very good team, TCU - in fact, if BYU's kicking game hadn't failed them that day in Cowboy Stadium, BYU probably would have beaten the Horned Frogs.

Bottom line:

BYU only lost three games, all to teams ranked in the Sagarin Top 40.

Utah lost five games, three of them to teams not ranked in the Top 40.

BYU's best win - #35 Tulsa
Utah's best win - #34 BYU

Final Rankings
BYU(10-3) #25 Coaches, #26 AP, #34 Sagarin
Utah(8-5) no votes in the polls, #39 Sagarin

How long ago was that Alabama game now? Injuries and half the players not wanting to be there(i.e. Mount Cody) was the ONLY reason the Utesies won that game. Nobody gave the Y a chance what so ever to beat Oklahoma in the new Jerry's world.

Chris B, the writer is not saying BYU can't recruit athletes. Anyway, you talk about winning championships being out of reach for any program that doesn't put winning as its highest priority, like Utah does. However, how many national championships does Utah have? How many does BYU have?

If BYU, having football being 4th or 6th on the list of priorities, still manages to win a national championship while Utah has yet to win one, despite having that be their highest priority, what does that say about the two programs?
