The wheels of space innovation have slowed to a crawl. We orbited with the space shuttle for 30 years and now we've been sending rovers to Mars for a couple decades. We've lost our tolerance for failure so NASA has to go really slow.
I think NASA needs to hybrid it's self into a hybrid, of government and revenue until the private sector takes over. Bring back rocks to sell or something. Sell driving time on the rovers. Why not? Billionares are wiling to pay 20 million just to orbit and they still do the science experiments. It's like a space dude ranch.
In the late 50's we made the SR-71 - still the fastest official jet aircraft. We better have some secret flying saucer to account for all the billions spent on black budgets.
