Losing 2 more linemen in a place where they are already thin is very
concerning. It seems odd to me that a player is deciding to transfer right
in the middle of fall camp.Where is Vakalahi transferring to?I
am also concerned that this "no contact" rule is going to cause more
harm than good. It seems to be affecting morale as well as making their skills
rusty, and teaching them to be soft. I can see how in the professional ranks it
works out OK but I think at this level, these guys still need the daily reps
with full contact to stay sharp. It seems despite the "no
Contact" almost every O-line player has at least a minor injury. And what does Bronco mean when he includes the coaches with the
"chippiness"? Is there some in-fighting among the coaching staff?
@Jenny83 and Juice BoxAs Utah fans like to point out, BYU's D
just gave up at the end of the 3rd quarter and in the 4th quarter. Up to that
point (about 5 mins to go in the 3rd quarter) John White IV had 14 yds rushing
on 12 carries. He then had 3 carries for over 100 yds and 2 scores in the 4th
QTR. U are replacing your two tackles from a decent, but not great,
O Line. Ziggy and KVN should have a field day this year.In
summary:U have a very mediocre QB, 'talented' WR's that
haven't done much of anything yet, and a really good RB who we shut down
for 3 of 4 qtrs last year until our guys cashed it in.You have a
mediocre secondary, a less than mediocre LB corps, and a fantastic D line.So unless BYU just gives U the ball 4 times like last year, I'm
saying the Cougs win, at worst, 35-21. I'm predicting 42-17
BYU.Should be a fun game :)Go Cougars!
@Jenny83 and Juice BoxFrankly, after having re-watched last
year's game a couple of times, it'll be a miracle if Utah can keep it
closer than 14 points. I'm not worried about the Utah game at all.Utah fans all remember the final score last year. Here are some of the
things they conveniently forget:Of all of the teams that Jake Heaps
played against in his career at BYU, he only broke the 300 yd passing barrier
once...last year against Utah. And that was with him sitting for the final 2
BYU drives. Your secondary is not that good, and had no answer for Cody Hoffman
or Ross Apo. Without Blechen this year, it's not looking good for U.BYU literally gave Utah the ball 4 times. 4 completely unforced
TO's that led to 28 pts for Utah...on 6 yds of offense. That, coupled with
the FF on Riley in garbage time at the end of the game, led to 35 of Utah's
@atl134 "Sub-par teams don't blow out good (is it so hard to
acknowledge the other team is good, or are we using golf terms and I didn't
realize it?) teams by 44 points."Yup, and "good" teams
don't lose to 3-10 teams on their home field. Not to mention losing to a
6-7 ASU team by 21 pts at RES. In summary, U lost to 4 teams last year with a
combined record of 23-29 by 65 points. BYU lost to 3 teams with a combined
record of 27-12 by 55 points. I would say Utah was a very average
team last year, while BYU was an above average to good team. Looking forward to beating down the Utes in RES this year.Go
After getting so caught up in last years Jake Heaps-lead hype about last years
team, I refuse to get over-excited again this year until I the Cougs are 4-0.
However, I am very impressed with the humility and quiet confidence portrayed by
Riley and the boys. This experienced leadership and camaraderie bodes well for
the confidence of this years squad. The Cougs have been overlooked by
everyone this year and will sneak up on a lot of their opponents.@
GoGetter Not sure what world you live in, but brothers, even tight-knit
ones, are always fighting among themselves. No news here.@ CWEB
Pretty certain that you live in the same alternate reality as GoGetter if
you honestly believe that Washington State is a "powerful" team this
season.@ all Ute fans Get over yourselves and last years blow-out.
It is a one-time only anomaly lead by a BYU prima-donna (Jake Heaps). Go ahead
and look ahead and forget about BYU-gonna be another massacre. Mark it down.
@BigCougFan"We don't mind you getting over confident in your
sub-par Utes."Sub-par teams don't blow out good (is it so
hard to acknowledge the other team is good, or are we using golf terms and I
didn't realize it?) teams by 44 points.
BigCougFan,Coming from the fan of the team who is looking rather
'WAC-ish'...I agree with Jenny.
Jenny83 -Keep dreaming. We don't mind you getting over
confident in your sub-par Utes.
"Even Utah would be a miracle win this year" Seeing as BYU has only beat
Utah 30% of the time in the last decade and got wolloped last year by 44 points
at home bye the Utes, it would be an absolute miracle if BYU even came close to
keeping up with the Utes in this years rivalry game.
to gogetterNo, it's that true news articles are hard to come by
these days. However, don't comment on that fact, 'cause
DNews gets its feelings hurt really easily and "refuses to play" (post,
that is) when readers comment on their inane "news" stories.
I admit I am getting a bit nervous for this upcoming season. Plenty of injuries
for the Utes. However, everything from fall camp and spring practice has
excellent reviews and we look to have an awesome team. It seems like all the
news coming from BYU is either hush hush, or things getting "chippy". If
I was a BYU fan I would be nervous about all the bad publicity from your own
team. Though, at the same time, BYU could come out and surprise a lot of teams.
Very concerned...that Nelson, as a SENIOR, has yet to play well in a
"big" game against a "big" name school. Not once has he not
choked in a big game for us. He performs great against the low-end teams, but
I've not been impressed, and I don't think we will do well against
Wash. State or any other powerful teams...even Utah would be a miracle win this
year, and I'm hoping for a miracle, because I can't stomach the Utes.
"They're starting to not like each other very much" So
much for the "Band of Brothers" T-shirt this year...
I don't blame the players getting chippy. After all, they aren't
allowed to hit when it's two-a-days and suited up. They won't even
know how to hit against Washington St. properly. I smell about 3 injuries within
the first half of the first game. Mark it down.
I will be the first to admit that I have a lot to learn in this life.
Furthermore I'm not an English or journalism professional by any means. That being said I would avoid the use of the word 'chippy' in
a headline!I really like Riley's honest and humble assessment
of himself. Such a contrast from last year. Just appreciate the example of this
young man.Go Cougars!
