Imagine that we all must eat at a restaurant or do without food. There are only 2 restaurants - 1) serves only meat. Even the beverages are some type of meat broth; 2) serves only tofu. Every menu item is a derivative of soy beans. Surely there are 2 clear and distinct choices of restaurants. And starving isn't a pleasant alternative. This election, to me , is like this. Why are there only 2 restaurants? We would not allow any others to exist. We only wanted the two.
We must make radical changes to our electoral system. We must do away with the 2 party system and abolish primaries. We adopt an instant runoff system where voters rank candidates according to preferences. The one with the most # 1 votes may not be the winner but there would be a consensus choice. We would still have Senators and Representatives but they would not be sitting in either blue or red seats, constantly barking at each other. We cannot get good representative government under our present system. We get only 2 restaurants. And I would rather starve - at least for a while.
