My experience of growing up near an Amish community in upstate New York is that they are good neighbors whose property is well kept and better maintained than the majority of the the gentile farms in the area. They educate their own children yet pay the the same school district property tax as their neighbors.

While there is the ocasional indiscretion with the law that is well publicized, they are a peaceful and responsible population. The Amish craftsmanship demonstrated in their furniture, building trades and arts is renowned for quality. That their population is expanding in an otherwise stagnate Great Lakes economy is no surprise.
