AZUTE1Mesa, AZ""Riley Nelson named to 2012 Davey
O'Brien National Quarterback Award watch list’"LOLLOL."Really??? It took you THIS long to think THAT up???
"Riley Nelson named to 2012 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award
don17, somehow plenty of people still manage to talk trash on Brian Johnson
going into coaching when failing to make an NFL roster. I'm sure people
would manage to do the same with Nelson.
Wow BYU fans over excited and Utah fans so willing to chop down an achievement
not one of them could accomplish!Odds on favorite Matt Barkley
USC.Landry Jones my second pick!Lets play nice now it is only
July not the end of August. Go Sooners! By the way Riley Nelson may
not be the most talented QB in the Nation, but he certainly will come prepared
to play. Not even Steve Young, Joe Montana, John Elway, Bart Starr or Jim
McMahon played perfectly every game. Riley if you can lead BYU to a
13 win season no one will be able to talk trash again about you!Good Luck!
Navel VetSeeing as while BYU was beating the Idaho States of the
world while Utah was losing to the football team with the absolute WORST road
record in college football, forgive us for not being impressed with who you are
and are not "enamored with."gonefishnFair enough
comment, and yet somehow, a broad pannel of impartial observers across the US
granted US and Riley that illusion. I would rather live with that figment of
the imagination than the somewhat desperate pipedream that Utah's first
year in the PAC was disappointing to say the least, with only an inexplicable
whipping of your rival preventing it from being categorized as abysmal.
Y grad/dadAny honest BYU fan would admit that the ranking and Riley's
win loss record is a bit of an illusion to put it lightly. Feel free to hang
your hat on that.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Riley not finish the season this year. Not
that I think he'll get injured, but rather by the time November rolls
around, he would have already been given the hook due to the cougars'
inability to match up well vs. the better teams on their schedule. I'd
venture a guess that whoever the #2 QB is, come season's end, will clean up
vs. Idaho, SJSU, and NMSU, and kickstart the "we're back" hype we
saw right after the Indy-WACers put their toughest opponents behind them back in
2010 and 2011.
Y Grad / Y Dad:"...[Riley] qb'd his team to #25 as a
junior."And we Ute fans are soooo impressed that he was able to
beat all those C-USA, WAC, and FCS teams in order to back into the Final Coaches
poll. But forgive us if we're not so enamored with his
performances vs. Utah and TCU.
gonefishnThanks for the chance to shoot at this again. You say
"no way is he in the top 1/3 of qbs in the country."I say -
he qb'd his team to #25 as a junior. As a more passing team than running,
and as he did a modest amount of the running too, it is not a stretch of the
imagination to say that, at the end of the year last year, he was in the top 25
qbs. Take away the seniors from last year, and this year he starts
as maybe one of the top 20. While I realize that this is not
empirical evidence, it is at least an indicator that can be taken into
consideration. As opposed to blanket unsubstantiated statements such
Good for Riley for getting some pub. He seems like a good leader and that is
important but in no way is he in the top 25% - 30% of college qb's.
Hmmmmm...Fresno state's QB is on the list but not
Utah's....Didn't some Utah fan recently mention Fresno st.
in attacking BYU?
BYU sure has its place with this award in its history. It's an honor even
to make this list. Riley is so fun to watch. He deserved to be watched and
placed on this list. Why is Taylor Martinez on there from Nebraska?
They must expect great things this year from a guy who is constantly accused of
his throwing abilities.
My fellow BYU fans, please don't rip on Wynn for the potential of a future
injury. Riley has a rather high potential for injury himself, although he has
proved himself to be tough.I snicker at my red brethren with their
boogymen for the pre-season. Last year, one of the feared PAC teams, Oregon
State, was on that list. As I recall, both Utah and BYU defeated the mighty
Beavers by similar scores at the OSU stadium. This year they threaten us with
Washington State.Make no mistake, I have a healthy respect for their
new coach, but the "other cougars" have a long ways to go, despite
nearly beating Utah last year. And the new schtick? Leave it to
Earnest; he does it well. Finally, IS Riley one of the 34 best qbs in
the nation this year? Time will tell, but I'd say that yes, he will be.
And all without having to return punts, Wayne. As for the slights against his
bowl game performance? He DID win, game winning drive in the final seconds.
@ patriot...Riley was totally dominating? Really? Not the game I
watched and rooted for the Golden Hurricane. Riley was 17 for 40
with 2 interceptions only one more passing down than Tulsa. He was
also sacked 3 times for 20 yards. The Tulsa qb had an Efficiency
Rating of 144.76, Riley's was 109.75. The Y did not lead the
whole first half and had to come from behind in the last 11 seconds to win. Yes, the game was a blow out, but only if you were viewing it with blue
glasses and drinking blue kool aid. I am sure with more
performances like this one Riley will be at the bottom of the Davey O'Brien
watch or will get his name removed by the Committee just to keep from having the
young man embarrassed.
Congrats to Riley for making this list, he deserves the recognition. Will the Ute QB be healthy enough to start this season or is he still on the
injured list?It seems this is the only list a Ute QB can get on
In all seriousness, I didn't think Riley would be considered one of the top
34 qb's in the nation this year, but I'm happy for him that he's
getting some recognition for his hard work. From what I've
heard, he's working a lot harder than the last guy was. Congrats from a Ute
This young man is exciting to watch. I'm personally never going to forget
when he high-fived the ref, a classic moment, don't care who you root for.
Let's just hope that he stays off of the Emergency Room Watch List.
re:Otis SpurlockYes Riley is certainly the best no question. His
performance in the bowl game was brilliant...sharp and accurate passes and total
domination. I see him going in the first round of the NFL draft.
No question Riley deserves to be on this list. Last season, Riley had the easy
part of the schedule--he got wins over Utah State, San Jose State, Oregon State,
Idaho State, Hawaii, and Tulsa; and a loss to TCU. He had a nice win over USU,
and that might be the toughest opponent Riley defeated last season. Riley
didn't have to play against Mississippi State, Texas, Utah, or Central
Florida--easily the tough run of last year's schedule. So the efficiency
rating is a tad inflated. The Y has huge expectations of Riley this
season. But this year Riley has to face Washington State, Utah, Notre Dame,
Georgia Tech.Last year's stats, expectations, and seniority
warrant putting Riley on these lists; becoming a finalist for these awards is
another story alltogether. Hope he pulls it off and the Y goes 10-2 (with
losses to Utes and Aggies...)
Riley Nelson is hands down the greatest quarterback ever to play for byu.
Probably the best quarterback the State of Utah has seen.Utah has no
chance of beating byu this year with Riley Nelson at the helm. Utah should
probably just forfeit the game right now.
RockOn:The "O'Brien" list is compiled based on a
QB's prior year results. Wynn only played in 3.5 games last season, and
without signature wins over schools such as USU and Tulsa, he had no chance to
The utah fans will of course have lots of comments on this. Good
luck with it Riley! We wish you an incredible season!
But, but, but... Utah's QB is not on the list. How credible can the list
be? After all, he plays for a PAC-12 school. C-Whitt is his coach. Just because
he's frail and hasn't lasted a season shouldn't matter.
