Something I don’t understand. The people who are so anti-democracy in America are the people who seem to want to impose democracy in other nations.
Why is Syria such a big deal? While millions of people are being slaughtered by corrupt governments around the world, we get wall to wall, 24-7 news coverage of a few hundred people being killed in Syria.
I don’t mean to slight the horrible conditions in Syria, but it seems to me the Syria problems are a propaganda tool that is not quite clear in it’s purpose.
My question is, yes, it's bad in Syria, but what are you proposing. All you say is that someone should do something. What? You are supposed to be an opinion leader, what are you suggesting? Or will you sit back while others try to address the problem, then take editorial pot shots? Seriously, this editorial is empty.
Obama meddled in foreign politics. His caused revolution. He sent Hillary Clinton to rally people against their leaders. Now we have another "Vietnam" with Russia and China on one side and the United States on the other side.
Doesn't anyone in the White House read history? How many times will Obama tell sovereign nations that they must listen to him?
Syria is in a mess. Like always, governments attack and massacre the weak who cannot fight back. Syria has a long bloody history. Why should we be surprised that they turn to bloodshed when foreign influences interfere with their sovereign state?
With Russia and China on one side and the United States on the other, we had better think long and hard about how far we want this battle for "Arab Spring" to go.
There are consequences to elections. We're seeing those consequences world-wide.
Before sending troops to Syria, let Obama go there and undo the mess that he's created.
Not at the cost of American lives and a greater budget deficit. Don't repeat Bush and subsequently Obama's fantasy of a peaceful, liberal democracy in Iraq and Afghanistan.
While the Syrian government and military are responsible in part for what's happening in that country, the terrorist acts against the Assad regime are part of a US-NATO-Israeli initiative, of which the Free Syrian Army is a part.
Further, many of these acts of terrorism and slaughter are highly exaggerated in the MSM to help drum up public support for a war, otherwise known as a "humanitarian action" against Syria. This tactic has been used often, most recently to spur action in Libya and against Cuba in the 60s, well documented as "Operation Northwoods".
There is certainly cause for social unrest and mass protest in Syria, it is a repressive regime. However, the true motive for Western intervention is not in the least humanitarian. It has been noted that "the road to Tehran goes through Damascus". As Syria is a key ally of Iran, it's no coincidence that immediately after NATO's regime change in Libya the focus shifted to Syria.
What an utterly vacuous editorial!
Dear DN,
I think it's OK for you to actually print your opinion when it's an editorial. Merely stating the obvious that it stinks for dictators to slaughter civilians is kinduva waste of time. Go ahead, propose an action.
Like this:
America needs to rediscover its moral base. The social doctrine of the day is that all cultures, religions, philosophies, and political structures are equally valid. So it's OK for one culture to abuse women, to levy war if it's for God, commit genocide since nothing is real, and to elect tyrants as long as it's by the voice of the people. It's all just a difference of opinion after all.
Pure rubbish.
America must openly and proudly sanction all movements that support life, liberty and the pursuit happiness. Where those movements are among our allies we must sanction those movements even unto arms. In the absence of such movements, even where civilians are slaughtered, we must refrain from arms. Investing American blood and treasure for Islamic democracy where the voice of the people will vote for terror and tyranny cannot be our goal.
Once again the media takes advantage of most Americans lack of understanding of the Middle East.
The region does not have a cultural history for "Democracy". The Arab Spring is for one purpose only-Islamic Theocracy. There will never be decomcracy in the Middle East as we know it. It is very clear that no one has done his or hers homework regarding the history of the region. The only thing the Middle East produces besides oil is bloodshed. Human life has little if any value because after all every deed is done in the name of Allah and there is always some great prize waiting in the afterlife. A culture where lying is permissible if it is for the good of Allah.
The Foregin Policy in the Middle East is now Post WW11 and since there is not any Communist threat-our Government decided to pull out of the Middle East. It is very hard for Americans to understand that there are places and people in the world that do want our kind of Government. They want freedom to live under a Muslim Theocracy. Good luck with that puzzle in world affairs.
