One school is left in the rear view mirror! This confirms the turning point that Utah is big time while the school down south is not.

Well this kind of seals my loyalties.

Over the past couple of years I've enjoyed razzing the Ute trolls, actually watched more Ute games than at any previous time. Actually rooted for them in the BCS games.

And here I thought I could actually maybe enjoy a Ute game. Now I know I can.

I'll root for every Ute opponent... a little more consistently.

Utah has such a tuff row to hoe that it drops BYU and schedules... Michigan? Hmm. I see. So Utah has to deal with such a daunting schedule including the likes of WASU and ASU that BYU would be just too much- whatever you say. And the rivalry? Sure USC gets to play Notre Dame in November, but they get to do what they want- they're SC. How could anyone expect Utah to get any concessions from the Pac being its waterboy and all? (Colorado will do just fine as your new rival- just do what you're told.)

Anyway, BSU stepped in nicely to fill the role of BYU's new rival and it's actually a respectable, competitive team that makes national waves. Yeah BYU has a few crummy games on its schedule toward the end of the season, but if they win the big games early on ESPN, coasting into a playoff slot isn't impossible, depending on how clear cut the SEC and Big 12 races are...

That's alright, sammy...BYU needs the support a lot more than Utah does right now.

Brave Sir Robin, actually by stadium attendance or TV or online viewers BYU has significantly more support than Utah right now!

@Kralon

By any standard of measurement BYU has more support.

I've seen too much football to know that every school ebbs and flows. BYU and Utah have both had some great teams. This should be the first game either school should schedule. That is why this is perplexing?

In Utah, this is the game we want to see. BYU/BSU & Utah Michigan just doesn't even come close.

Well that was dramatic. Seems like a lot of sour grapes from the BYU fans. The rivalry will continue, but it would be foolish for Utah to schedule BYU every single year when they have opportunities to play for big $ in the big house. I enjoy the rivalry, but I'm more happy to see the success and growth of my favorite program. This really isn't that big of a deal. It was inevitable.

BYU's decision to go independent has had as much to do with the difficulty in scheduling the annual holy war if not more than anything that Utah has done by joining the PAC12. Had Utah stayed, the MWC wouldn't be any more excited about Utah playing and independent BYU in their last game of the year than the PAC12 is. Especially when a Utah vs. BSU game would garner more national interest than the Utah - BYU rivalry.

BYU fans need to wake up to the fact that this is the reality of independence. BYU has a fraction of the clout that Notre Dame has when it comes to scheduling. If they want to play the top teams, it likely won't be on their terms.

BYU's immediate problem is you can't win championships in September. You could beat LSU, USC, Alabama and Notre Dame in September, but when Bo Didley Tech takes you to the wire in November even the "millions" watching on ESPN won't care.

"BYU fans will forever say they were sold out by their longtime colleague." If they said that, they would be right.

This is truly ridiculous. Utah is talking out of both sides of their mouth. Amazing the arrogance on the hill. Snob hill, it really fits.

I don't think one BYU fan is hoping for this rivalry to stay because of "scheduling". Silly at best, we want the game for the games sake.

No sour grapes here. See ya Utesies!

Enjoy your continuing saga of mediocrity!

Ten years ago, BYU dropped their annual games with Utah State, a rivalry going back to 1922. They only played the Aggies once in four years and that was a one and done in Provo. Today, BYU insists on a 2 for 1 schedule with Utah State. Maybe you should consider your own scheduling deals with in-state teams before you criticize others.

I agree with some parts of this article and disagree with other parts. BYU doesn't need Utah in September when they can schedule other big name programs. Utah doesn't need the Y with their current schedule. So I say let's take a break for two years and reevaluate. Coug fans can cry all they want, as several posters already have but this won't impact either team in the short term. Long term, I hope the teams continue to play yearly on a home and home basis but for now they need to give it a rest.

I'll keep my season Ute tickets with or without bYu. Actually it's a bit fun to watch the bYu fans whimper and snivel whether they win or lose. Always an excuse, always a complaint.

BYU is trying to improve it's schedule by getting rid of the WACish teams in November and will in 2013. Utah is trying to ease it's schedule by getting rid of real football teams in September and adding WACish teams. Don't be fooled - Michigan is not replacing BYU on the schedule. There is room for both. Idaho or Idaho St will take BYUs place on Utah's schedule. I hope U enjoy watching that game.

Six of Utah's nine PAC opponents had losing records in 2011 Two of Utah's PAC opponents with winning records were 7-6. Lol It's no wonder U needed an easier schedule.

Those utes, they don't need anyone on their schedule. They should just be told where to pick up the national title trophy. They don't even need to play a game to prove how epic they are. They've dominated for so many years, did BYU ever win any games against them? Their program is big time. They have such a long tradition of winning, national champions, all americans, and national award winners how can they ever be denied anything ever. BYU fans, all they do is cry and whine and moan. They have no history to stand on. They've never had any good players, they've never won championships, they don't have a history of playing power programs and winning, The utes have always been the better program. BYU has never done anything on a national stage. utah was born on the national stage. They built the stage. The utes were the PAC' s second choice just to make Texas and Oklahoma feel better...just being nice. Those utes, they shouldn't even look down their noses at BYU, the cougars don't deserve that kind of attention.

@Randelius

BYU needs help in November scheduling. Utah can't help. The PAC-12 won't permit it. Yes, USC is an exception and can play Notre Dame and as you say Utah is not USC. (May I add BYU is no Notre Dame except in their own minds. "Notre Dame of the West") Utah realizes it is not USC. That was why we were willing to accept membership with 0% tv money the firest year; 50% the next; 75% the third; and finally full benefits. That is why we are in the PAC-12; we recognized we had to earn membership. (Remember Colorado did not have to accept such conditions because 1) they were coming from the Big 12 conference and had to pay millions of dollars to leave the conference.)

If BYU ever wants to be in a conference (Maybe independence is for them.) They would do well to learn from Utah's approach and be willing to accept rather than demand.

"BYU fans are furious the Utes won't help the Cougars out with their scheduling problems."

You're sooo disconnected from reality Rock. I have hundreds of BYU friends and not a single one of them has ever expressed anything of the sort.

BYU doesn't NEED Utah's scheduling help in the slightest, especially during the only time period that Utah's new task master will allow the Utes to play OOC games. There are plenty of much bigger programs that are interested in playing the Cougars in September.
