marxist: "The D-News hasn't changed editorially since 1936."

I disagree. The Deseret News is far more right-wing today than it was just ten years ago. Look at the columnists they feature now. Look at the tone and subject matter of their editorials. Look at the vitriol in the letters they publish.

I'm amazed the Deseret News building itself isn't spinning rapidly clockwise from all the tilting to the right it does.

So, Tyler D from Idaho, if your house is on fire your choice is to "c. Put out the fire yourself and then get on with life." Is that correct? If the fire is relatively small this may be a viable option, but for anything slightly larger trying to put the fire out by yourself will likely only be accomplished after your house is a pile of smoldering embers on the ground. And likely your neighbors house. To think anything else is delusion and blissful ignorance. Every year people lose entire structures, and sometimes their lives, trying to put out fires by themselves.

Option b is usually the best option. (I'm not sure what reading a book, old or new, has to do with the issue at hand.) I don't believe you need to shout, but calling for help from the fire department will give much better results then trying to use your little garden hose on a structure fire. But maybe you've never actually seen fire up close.

Mark - I was using a metaphor (apparently not a very good one) not meant to be taken literally. “A” was meant to suggest someone who goes to religion for solace (the “old fiction book” was meant to be the Bible). In “B” I was trying to describe someone who has substituted government (or liberal politics) for religion. And “C” was simply meant to describe someone who simply sees things for what they are and acts accordingly (relatively free of delusions). I’ll work on my analogy skills…

Oh P-L-E-A-S-E....
Be honest.

The answer is "B"

Granted, The very 1st you might do is throw some water on it
but c'mon....You be frantically calling 9-1-1 for help.
9-1-1 -- the Fire Department, the Government, that evil Socialist and tax paid for entity Conservatives hate so much until they need it for themselves then it's a life saver...like Social Security and medicare.

BTW - Please keep working on you analogy skills.
This one was full of all kinds of holes.

If we look at behaviors, what would be some indications of happy people?
- Is it those who think happiness is in drugs or alcohol?
- Is it those who think happiness is with ever changing sexual partners?
- Is it those who think happiness results from suicide?
- Is it those who think happiness is in gambling or porn addictions?
- Is it those who think happiness is is tattoos and piercings?
- Is it those who think happiness is in tummy tucks and breast implants?

I think all those are indications of people who are unhappy and searching in all the wrong places for something that will at least give them the illusion of happiness. I think Hollywood is the classic example of people just like this. They show up on our tabloids with a false image of happiness. The gullible look at them and dream what it must be like to be them. But we gloss over the drug abuse, the broken homes and relationships, the physical changes, the suicides that are the real indication that they are some of the saddest people in all the world.

Arthur Brooks is also author of a book which claimed conservatives are more charitable than liberals. However one huge flaw in his study was that he failed to consider cost-of-living and, as a result, his conclusions were not entirely accurate. For example, in his study UT was in the top 10 most generous states. When cost-of-living was taken into account, (by researchers at Boston U) UT was #1 and more "blue" states appeared in the top 10 most generous states.

What I found interesting in the article was:
"People at the extremes are happier than political moderates. Correcting for income, education, age, race, family situation and religion, the happiest Americans are those who say they are either “extremely conservative” (48 percent very happy) or “extremely liberal” (35 percent). Everyone else is less happy, with the nadir at dead-center “moderate” (26 percent)."

The comments on this article actually confirm it. All one has to read each day are the comments from the Libs on these pages and one will know that they are angry, bitter and unhappy.

Your comments out you each time you hit submit.

I had a great laugh reading through the comments knowing how they were going to be. Conservatives are happy because they are too busy living while Liberals are unhappy because they are too busy dying.

I will say though that the Libs on these pages follow their Hope and Change Dear Leader perfectly.

Just 4 percent of people who grew up in the bottom fifth of the household income ladder made it to the top fifth as adults, according to a new long-term study (Pew Charitable Trust's Economic Mobility Project), showing the limits of American mobility. Most people raised in very rich and very poor households didn’t see their own circumstances change much when they grew up.

In all, 35 percent of American households could be classified as upwardly mobile, meaning they had a higher household income than their parents at the same age and were at a higher point in the income distribution ladder than their parents had been.

Conservatives are happier because they are told they are.

Ah! The "joy" of being a dittohead??

Couldn't help but notice you did not mention sweets or anti-depressants.

Is Morgan Freeman (Shawshank Redemption) getting some type of gratuity for your co-opting his observation?

"I will say though that the Libs on these pages follow their Hope and Change Dear Leader perfectly."

What about that "accurate" and legendary pile rhetoric from The Decider... Mission Accomplished or my personal fave from the Mama Grizz, "Drill baby drill"

I know one thing that makes me less happy: reading through comment boards on the internet. Doesn't matter the subject, from IMDB to contentious facebook posts to the Deseret News, it's filled with unnecessary bickering, ad hominem attacks, and plain old meanness.

As ironic as it is that I'm mentioning this on a comment board, I feel I should say something. I know many will just brush this comment aside as soon as you're done with it, or more likely find a way to put it down. Ask yourself this: Are you more calm, content, and satisfied while you are reading a comment section, or are you in a better mood an hour later, after you've put it out of your mind?

I know I come on here all too often, and I need to back it off. I've believed for a long time that the anonymity of the internet and message boards will be the eventual death of civility in cyberspace as well as in real life. I need to walk the walk and say goodbye to comments, and this seems like the ideal place to do it.

I beg to differ ---
Your opinion and logic would put Ultra-Conservative Utah dead last in the happiness formula...

i.e., Ultra-Conservative Utah leads the Nation in Cosmetic Surgery, surpassing even "Liberal" Hollywood.

Utah also leads the Nation in;
#1 in Anti-Depresant drug use,
#8 in suicide rate,
and
#1 with on-line Porn.

Put your head back in the sand,
The real world isn't as perfect as you make it up to be.

All is NOT well in Zion.

I ask myself that everyday about those who listen to hate radio KVI 570, Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity and FoxNews.
