For a program that says they have a "national brand" it must be a bit frustrating 1 and 2 star players from the state of Utah.
For the moment most bYu fans are giddy about landing 20 recruits before the 4th of July.....but what will you be feeling come Feb?
There will be a lot of finger point about Y the Y chose to settle for players who probably would have only got offers from Weber St or Dixie. Yes, spin that Utah had interested in a few of your recruits, but the bulk of the class is very poor. Scout and Rivals will have this class ranked in the 65-80 range.
RE: hedgehog
"Scout and Rivals will have this class ranked in the 65-80 range."
Perhaps. BYU traditionally ranks in the 35-55 range, but I wouldn't be surprised if they slipped a little in 2013. Not because the talent isn't there but because early recruits rarely improve their individual rankings. This is not because those recruits don't actually improve and deserve better rankings by the two main recruiting services, but because they are no longer in the spotlight. Oh well, BYU still manages to consistently win and be nationally ranked--something no other Utah school can claim.
By the way, current 2013 rankings place BYU at 51/38 and Utah at 73/69. Go Cougs!
Don't care where the young men end up.
Just get a college education and move ahead in life.
Good luck to you.
"Patrick (Palau) is simply the most outstanding human being I've ever coached," said Matich. "With what he's been through, his dedication to his family, his teammates and everything that is important in his life, BYU is getting an incredible young man. He's a leader on our team and as deserving as anyone I could imagine of getting an offer from BYU, and he'll be nothing but a success for them there."
Sorry hedgie but his coach's opinion carries just a little more credibility than yours. I'm sure that BYU and Utah will both sign kids with more stars but who cares? Anybody who wouldn't want a kid like this in their program is foolish. Nice to see that your obsession with all things BYU continues unabated though.
That's a pretty funny comment from hedgehog since the U has already tried to poach a couple of BYU's commits.
I am a huge Ute fan and love to mock BYU at almost every turn but the simple truth is every football team can use a kid like this, regardless of "ranking".
Thanks to the Ute fans without a complex. Palau may or may not receive more stars later on in the recruiting process, but we'll take him. East High is improving academics for one reason, and that's to prepare them for the standards at BYU. Hopefully gone are the days of the Crowton recruiting method where we get the otherwise Utah-bound kids that can't pass eligibility for BYU - Star, for example. Then, they can reconsider their recruitment after or during JC ball.
Our recruiting pool is jacuzzi size compared to the U's. We get who we have evaluated and offered early because of this. Utah will get the rejects of the other, more prestigious PAC-12 schools and their ranking will soar as we approach February.
Just the way it works.
Congrats to these kids, a free education is a wonderful opportunity.
I love how Gurney has done a 180 this year, at least partially. Last year Gurney said the instate talent was done, because BYU was unable to get hardly any of the top talent. This year will be no different, as BYU looks slotted to gain the pledge of 2 of the top 10-15 highest rated instate kids. Yet now East is loaded!
LOL
hh better take a look at the u's class. More than half are two star recruits. Comparing the u's class (a few 4's, 3's, and mostly 2's) to USC's (5, 4, and 3's) should really scare u. Even UCLA and ASU signed higher rated players. u did do about the same as CU and slightly better than UA. If the new coaches hired in the south are has-beens, u might have a chance to finish in the upper half of the division. This year will be your best shot. The schedule is stacked in your favor. But, if you choke again this year, u will never play in a conference championship game, which means no NC for u.
Hedge obviously is not paying attention to whats happening in Provo. Hopefully he keeps posting driving more locals to want to play for a team with great class. Heck if he keeps it up, Langi will head to Provo after his mission too. These young kids are great young men who don't want to play for a fan base that is filled with hatred.
BYU fans love these local kids. They got great talent, great character. Let the Utes mock them, Cougars will take them everytime!
re: IndianaCoug - thanks for a good laugh this morning. I love it! God bless America where even people can say dumb stuff but that's ok cause it's a free country and we can laugh about it.
@inthebooth
So the truth is something you find amusing? Facts are facts and you are correct even dumb people can say dumb stuff. You just proved it.
LOL!
Who cares where any school is in the national recruiting rankings now? Yes it is nice to get kids to commit early but what is important is the ranking after they have signed the letters of intent. Seems like a lot of Coug fans are confusing quantity over quality in their comparisions.
Not how about a comment on the artice? The kids from East HS (committing to BYU) seem like decent players and fit the standards to attend the Y. Good for them and congratulations also to those going to Logan. My school will be just fine with recruits when all is said and done, especially after another beatdown on the team from Provo this year.
CoUte You can only hope. Predictions are like? Everybody has one.
@co ute
"Seems like a lot of Coug fans are confusing quantity over quality in their comparisions."
Hmmm.....of course this exactly the opposite of what utah "fans" have been telling us about last years recruiting classes between BYU and utah.
BYU had a small class last year because they had so many missionaries returning. utah had a large class last year. utah's class wound up highly ranked even though the overall average player rating was very close to the same as BYU's overall player average rating. But because utah had a larger overall number of recruits their overall ranking was higher.
So which is it? Is it average ranking, which denotes "quality" or is it how many which denotes "quantity". You guys always want to try and have it both ways don't you?
LOL!
hedgie - have U looked to see where your Utes recruiting is ranked by Rivals at this point? U may want to withhold your comparisons until the dust settles. I'll save you the research, U are ranked 11th out of 12 in the PAC12, and well below the Cougs!
There's an article in the Oregonian knocking Oregon and Oregon State for losing top athletes to BYU, with BYU already getting commitments from 3 of the top 10 football prospects in Oregon. Cougs are on the rise!
Patrick - welcome to Cougar Nation!
@hedgehog So how are you going to spin the story from the Oregonian on July 3 about B.Y.U getting commits from 3 of the top 10 2013 high school recruits from Oregon? Go Cougs!!
BYu always fills their roster early.
