So . . . the news story here is that BYU is recruiting a high school player? Wow. Glad Brandon Gurney is on top of things.
BYU fans should relish in their weakening mid-major football program before it comes to an end.......tick tock, tick tock.......?
Monk
I not only don't follow the NFL careers of former players, I don't follow the recruiting news from up on the hill. But I do follow the High School players that BYU recruits. I think Brandon writes, and the DN publishes, these stories for readers like me. It may be that you are in the wrong section of the news.
The related link must have impressed you too. Another high school quarterback. With a brother on the team. Planning on a mission. Now you don't have to read the link.
Or make a comment.
@ Y Dad,
While I like you as a person and enjoy your banter, some fans, including myself, enjoy following players in college and the pros. Different strokes for different folks. Cheers!
@Cougar Claws
His point is that despite being "QB U", BYU hasn't produced a decent quarterback since Steve Young. If you're going to call yourself "QB U", you should probably turn out a good QB more than once every 30 years.
The U has had its share of QB troubles, but we don't go around calling ourselves "QB U" either.

Ty Detmer had a 14-year NFL career, I'd say that makes him a legit NFL QB.
More importantly, for jealous Utah fans to consider, is he was a Heisman Trophy winner and has now joined FIVE other BYU QBs in the National College Football Hall of Fame!
Robbie Bosco won a National Championship.
Steve Sarkisian won a National College Quarterback of the Year Award.
BYU players have won 15 National Individual Player Awards.
Utah players have NEVER won a single National Individual Player Award.
Great programs produce great, nationally recognized players.
Call us when Utah produces its first.
@ Brave Sir Robin.
I vehemently agree with you. Utah has produced two legit NFL starting QBs since Steve Young......Scott Mitchell and Alex Smith. Ty Detmer, the Heisman winner, wore a headset and held a clipboard in the NFL. Max Hall is probably the worst QB to ever take a snap in the NFL and John Beck is a NFL bust at best. Heck, Ty's brother Coy was a better NFL QB as a matter of fact. Ute Brian Johnson took Utah to an undefeated season, demolished Alabama and won the Sugar Bowl MVP award, although he wasn't NFL material.......like ALL the QBs since Steve Young. Y fans are looking for any "scrap' to try to appear relevant in the BCS era.........and it is falling upon deaf ears, obviously.
Washington QB?
Jake Heaps = 5 Stars
Alex Smith = 1 Star
What else do you want to know?
@B C
"Great programs produce great, nationally recognized players."
Correction: Great programs produce great, nationally recognized WINS...something BYU hasn't done in a very, very long time.
"I vehemently agree with you. Utah has produced two legit NFL starting QBs since Steve Young......Scott Mitchell and Alex Smith."
lol
How many NFL and/or Super Bowl MVP awards did Mitchell and Smith win?
In fact, cite me ONE significant NFL achievement by either of them.
More important, however, did either one of them win any national individual quarterback awards in college, which for BYU and Utah fans, is far more important than any accomplishments achieved post college.
As far as BCS-era relevance, BYU finished in the Top 25, again, in their first year as an independent; Utah was UNRANKED in their first year as a "BcS" team.
Comparing seasons,
BYU had a one-game meltdown and ended the season with only three losses to teams with a combined 27-12(69%) record.
Utah had a season-long meltdown and ended the season with five losses to teams with a combined record of 33-33(50%) record
Does any BYU fan remember Steve Young's first two years in the NFL? He was deemed a bust and let go by the TB Bucs. He rode the pine under Joe Montana for a few years, then took over a 49er team team that was arguably one of the top 2 teams in the history of the NFL, along with the 1970s-80s Pittsburgh Steelers. And, had the greatest receiver of all time on that team.......Jerry Rice. I like Steve Young, but he inherited a MONSTER NFL team, the lucky devil.
@ phoenix,
I am not sure, but I think that BYU has never finished in the top 25 in the final BCS computer rankings during the BCS era?????? Last year they were #35 and Utah #39. bottom line is........BYU has never sniffed a BCS bowl, never considered for an elite BCS conference invite, has been creamed by Utah 3 times, lost 7/10 to the Utes and has the worst November schedule in college football history in 2012. Now, the Utes will beat the tar out of BYU again this year, then BYU loses 29 seniors and will be rebuilding with poor recruiting classes and losing dramatically in 2013-14.........just for starters. BYU football is struggling.
Are we comparing again?
u-h alum
A little lesson:
The final BCS rankings are NOT the final end of season rankings, in fact, Utah has never finished higher than 6th in final BCS rankings.
And, yes, BYU has finished in the Top 25 of the final BCS rankings several times, and as recently as 2009, they were eligible to play in a BCS game, the just weren't chosen.
btw, it's funny how Utah fans want it both ways... judge BYU QBs solely by their success in the NFL, but give Brian Johnson a pass for being a complete bust in the NFL, but claiming that he had a great college career.
lol
at the inconsistency.
@ phoenix,
Your struggles will ONLY get more unrealistic and complicated. Have fun bro!
Utah finished #4 and #2 in the final BCS rankings in 04 and 08. BYU has done ZERO! Relish in that bro!
Max Hall would have been killed if the Cards didn't waive him. He is the worst QB in the history of the NFL.
@UHA "I am not sure, but I think that BYU has never finished in the top 25 in the final BCS computer rankings during the BCS era"
Final Sagarin Rankings since 2005 (when Bronco and Kyle both took over--I'm using Sagarin because he factors in the BCS algorithm into his rankings and there is no final BCS standings after the bowl games and using Utah as a metric):
-2005-
BYU: 55
Utah: 51
-2006-
BYU: 13
Utah: 46
-2007-
BYU: 17
Utah: 34
-2008-
BYU: 32
Utah: 5
-2009-
BYU: 15
Utah: 24
-2010-
BYU: 45
Utah: 26
-2011-
BYU: 34
Utah: 39
Average final ranking over the last 7 years:
BYU: 30
Utah: 32
So to answer your query, BYU finished in the Top 25 3 times since Bronco took over and was eligible for a BCS bowl in 2009 (ranked #14 in the BCS standings-unfortunately for the Cougs, both TCU and BSU were undefeated that year and ranked ahead of the boys in blue).
As for NFL QB's, BYU has had 5 QB's drafted or signed on into the NFL since Steve Young. U have had 2.
Go Cougars!
@ truecoug1,
Sorry sir, but your stats are not BCS computer rankings. Hold on to BYU football until it is cancelled as a program. Enjoy!
Gosh, being a Ute fan in the 21st century is great. Last year, a plethora of BYU hopefuls made fun of Wazzu. Well, Wazzu will torch BYU easily. BYU has zero secondary and no offense. I can't wait to watch that late-night game..........If I, and the rest of the nation, can stay awake? That remains to be seen and evaluated?
