Many in our country have taken the concept of separation of church and state to extremes that were never initially intended. It was originally intended to mean that no specific church denomination could or would be endorsed or promoted by the government. It was never intended that the government should disavow any association or mention of religion altogether.
After all, our government was organized and instituted by founding fathers who for the most part, were very religious men who often mentioned the importance of their faith in the creation of the U.S. Constitution. Mention of God is made many times in our government's core documents. Even today, our currency still includes the inscription "In God We Trust". None of this promotes any specific denomination over another.
Since the mid twentieth century, a relatively few paranoid individuals have misconstrued the original intent to try to make it taboo of any mention of God in public, which I'm sure the founding fathers would find ridiculous. This extreme of the tail wagging the dog has now often been carried over into private companies that operate in public, much to the majority of peoples' dismay. This story is a prime example.
