The following is a more specific narrative regarding the concerns of Carville and Greenberg:
"It is elites who are creating a conventional wisdom that an incumbent president must run on his economic performance - and therefore must convince voters that things are moving in the right direction. They are wrong, and that will fail. The voters are very sophisticated about the character of the economy; they know who is mainly responsible for what went wrong and they are hungry to hear the President talk about the future. They know we are in a new normal where life is a struggle - and convincing them that things are good enough for those who have found jobs is a fool’s errand. They want to know the plans for making things better in a serious way - not just focused on finishing up the work of the recovery.
"We are losing these voters on the economy...[and they] want to know that he understands the struggle of working families and has plans to make things better."
If Obama continues to run on his economic performance, he will definitely loose in November. Romney needs to continue the focus on Obama's economic performance.
Democratic strategist James Carville knew Obama was in trouble last September, long before Mitt Romney secured the Republican nomination. He had just one word of advice for President Barack Obama: Panic.
It is not wonder why Obama laments that he isn't campaigning against John McCain for a repeat.
"Former Democratic Party chairman Don Fowler faulted the Obama camp for not laying more blame on Republicans for the slow economic recovery."
The Obama camp has laid blame for anything bad on anyone but Obama, that is how they roll. The One can do no wrong. Part of the problem is that he assured everyone he could fix everything, very quickly, its hard to convince them otherwise now.
the urgency is to find him a high powered book deal on being the most overrated community organizer on the planet. poor barack, a legacy of failure. november can't come soon enough
So there is still some hope for America. This is good news. It's too bad the democrats don't see this as good news.
Personally, I want Obama to keep his "all is well in Zion" attitude ("The economy is doing fine"). Hopefully he tries to paint the picture of him being "calm" in a turbulent economy, but he will learn that as an incumbent who has kept our economy in the slumps, that is not the portrayal the people want to see.
Obama, you have been weighed. You have been measured. And you have absolutely been found wanting. Welcome to the real world!
The Democratic Party's problems are now coming home to roost.
As an Independent, I will not lose sleep over this problem.
I hope President Obama will take Don Fowler's advice on blaming Republicans more. The level of blaming he already does, which occurs in every appearance, is sad, pathetic, and highly un-Presidential. Ramping up the blame message can only turn off more and more voters, and result in Obama's defeat.
Time for the whining amateurs to be escorted from the White House.
Obama, from the very beginning of his campaign for president, said it would take 4 years to turn this economy around. We have not reached that 4-year mark yet. While I don't believe Obama will win a second term, I do wonder about a couple of points: One, if the economy really starts to recover next year, will Romney take the credit, as he will not have accomplished anything yet? And if it doesn't, how long will he blame Obama?
Martin Sheen, Michael Moore, Jerry Springer and Barbara Streisand. What do these Hollywood liberals all have in common?. Birds of a feather flock together. Four years ago, it was "Obama Girl," model and actress Amber Lee Ettinger, who became an Internet sensation singing on YouTube about her crush on candidate Barack Obama. Now it's "Obama Boy" who has the crush. Justin Brown, described on his Facebook page as a "producer, actor, director, and writer at Seymore Films and the Maine Studios," plays "Obama Boy" in a YouTube video that focuses on Obama's support of gay marriage. In 2004 George W. Bush’s re-election campaign worked to put anti-gay marriage ballot initiatives up for vote in several swing states in order to turn out more hard-core conservatives to the polls. This year the question is whether marijuana legalization measures will turn out young voters for Obama. Today, as we celebrate Flag Day, we are reminded that this is truly a great land of great people who have made great sacrifices. We are blessed to fly our Stars and Stripes.
"Obama, from the very beginning of his campaign for president, said it would take 4 years to turn this economy around. We have not reached that 4-year mark yet."
I don't think he said that. If so, then why would he say this in the beginning of his presidency, early 2009:
"You know, a year from now, I think people are going to see that we're starting to make some progress but there is still going to be some pain out there. If I don't have this done in three years, then there's going to be a one-term proposition."
Let's do the math: early 2009 + 3 years = early 2012. Hey, look! It's past early 2012! That means that, according to Obama, there's going to be a one-term proposition. Obama said it, not me. That's why he's saying the economy is doing just fine. It's an attempt to fool Americans and not break his promise.

"Obama, from the very beginning of his campaign for president, said it would take 4 years to turn this economy around. We have not reached that 4-year mark yet."
Obama has now been in office 3 1/2 years and the unemployment rate rose again last week. When is this economic turn-around supposed to begin? There's a reason why Obama is starting to have trouble raising funds. Americans like to bet on a winner.
@xscribe - Obama's campaign promise was not only Hope and Change, but immediate transformation. Great economic theories promising a quick turnaround. We were supposed to be so excited by the end of 3 years that he'd be a one-term president if everything wasn't fixed. We were supposed to be under 6% unemployment by now.
Furthermore, Obama was supposed to end political divisiveness by infusing our nation with optimism and common purpose. I hoped that would happen. Instead, he's never stopped campaigning, has demeaned Republicans in nearly every address and press conference, and mocked anyone who dared disagree with him.
Bush rarely derided political opponents in his speeches, even if his rigid political philosophy was polarizing. Obama's rhetoric is the most politically divisive in my lifetime, from a President. He's thin-skinned and seems completely oblivious to the dignity his office requires. A pathetic whiner, and Biden's even worse.
It's possible that some economic indicators will begin trending upward immediately if Romney is elected, because of his election. Since he'll be taking immediate action designed to immediately impact the economy, he should take credit for that, or blame if things get worse.
I don't remember him promising immediate transformation, but I do remember him saying it would take four years for this economy to start a full recovery. That's how I remember it, but I may be wrong. I'm not going to go back and find footage to try to prove whether or not I am correct.
With that said, how is it possible for economic indicators (which ones) to trend upward immediately if Romney is elected? A poster insinuates it's just because of Romney's election. Economic indicators have been trending upward (except for a small uptick in unemployment just recently) for the last couple of years. Again, Romney will not have done anything for the first few months of next year - the 4-year mark - to take credit for. My only questions were how he, Romney, would or would not take credit, or the lack thereof, of any upward or downward trend in the economy.
Guess we'll have to wait and see.
Dems are panicking. Call the Waaambulance.
Of course dems are being nervous, they have BO's record to try and obfuscate.
Xscribe,
“Obama, from the very beginning of his campaign for president, said it would take 4 years to turn this economy around.”
While we have rarely agreed, I have thought of you as honest, but you know your statement is not true.
You know he was interviewed on NBC and said if he did not have things turned around in THREE years, his was a one term presidency.
You also know he said if congress passed his porkulus that unemployment would STAY under 8%, not that it would return to below 8% in 4 years.
"Former Democratic Party chairman Don Fowler faulted the Obama camp for not laying more blame on Republicans for the slow economic recovery."
HA!!! Nice try Don. Yes sir it's the GOP's fault. What??? Never mind the fact that the Dem's had both the house and senate as well as the White House for 2 years with ZERO opposition and got their giant stimulus packages as well as Obamacare rammed through with ZERO GOP votes. Sorry guys but you OWN this economy!! No more blaming Bush. During those two sorry years we saw unemployment jump from 7.4% to 10.2% and we followed that up with our credit downgrade.... first in US history. Sorry dem's but there is no where to hide anymore and no one to blame for this sick economy but yourself. Oh and by the way you guys also OWN the 5.5 trillion in new debt!!! Largest in history accumulated by any president in his first 3 years.... which by the way led to our credit downgrade.
So - Obama said he would be a 1 term president if he couldn't fix the economy. Things are worse than when he started.
The only sense of urgency in the country is the one to get rid of Obama and put this disaster of the past 4 years behind us.
The average American household has lost 40% of its wealth over the last 3 years. 40%!
This clown needs to be fired!!
The Oblama campaign rolls into high gear. It's the same speech as 2008, as if he were not president for the last 3.5 years. It's W's fault, despite controlling congress the first 2 years and the senate for 3+ years it is still the Repub's fault, it's the tsunami or Greece and on and on. Blame anyone but don't take any blame. Man up Mr. President, be a leader. Stop the whining.
@Katiebugg: That was over the period 2007-2010. What has the gain been over the last year?
@Lost: Read my last post: I said I remembered hearing that during his campaign, but that I may be wrong; i.e., I am not stating it as fact. I will state it as fact if it is true, not as others do and state opinions as facts.
Now, will you at least agree that there can be unforeseen circumstances that would render a "promise" unfulfillable?
@xscribe - it's not unusual for the stock market to move dramatically based on an election. I'll admit the stock market has appeared to remain strong, but the election of a more business-friendly (or even perceived business-friendly) President could result in even stronger stock market figures even in November 2012.
Business owners may feel that Romney brings more favorable certainty to their business climate, and may start to hire and use their money in ways that could stimulate the economy. If that happens, I guarantee the Obama supporters will give Obama credit, and whine about the tragedy of him losing the election just at the precise moment all his policies started working. Understanding of unintended consequences is not the strong suit of Obama or his supporters.
I don't know whether these types of economic indicators will trend up as described - I'm just saying it's certainly not impossible by any means, and a Presidential election is no small matter in the macroeconomic scope of things.
