Governments, like individuals, can always spend more than they earn ..... if they put their minds to it.

Congress confirms the budget and the president works "with" it. Trouble is, most members of both parties and occupants of the White House for the past number of years have shown very little interest in spending limits.

Folks, there is plenty of tax money to go around, reasonably. The only way to get those guys and gals is to send 'em home permanently. (Don't worry, their benefits will continue forever, including a health plan that doesn't include obamacare.)

Though a balanced approach to deficit reduction will be the plan that would have the highest chance of passing both houses of congress, & most likely enjoy a broader support among Americans, it should only follow evidence that the federal government can limit spending. Government has already shown itself addicted to overspending. The deficit is a spending problem. In my opinion government should first show it will cut spending, say for 4 consecutive years or until the annual budget is balanced. After proving fiscal discipline in this way, then I would trust government to raise taxes for the purpose of paying down the national debt.
