This is killing a goose that lays golden eggs. Springdale is ruining the reputation of not only Springdale, but of all of Utah. A bad reputation can last decades.
Given this, Utah authorities need to step in and put a stop to this.
Thanks for this article. Bravo DNews! All is not well in Zion and its National Park.
Whats going on in Springdale is nothing more than a shakedown worthy of a third world country. Someone should go to jail for this.
Seems to me that if true; the officers are guilty of robbery and should go to prison.
It is likely that the money that was allegedly taken, would have been spent in the city anyway.
This is one police department that needs to be forceably disbanded. This type of corruption doesn't come just from the cops, it is the city fathers turning a blind eye which makes them a part of it. Force the police department to disband, and bring in the Washington County Sheriff's office. Prosecute them all from the cops to the Mayor.
I agree with prior comments. Their practice of immediate payment stinks and reflects on the entire state. Fire the entire police department and bring in a police chief that can be trusted to uphold the integrity of the City, County and State. Our reputation with tourists is at stake.
This is great that it's making news, and hopefully DMN does a follow up on this, and ensures that the situation has been handled.
This highlights the misdeeds of ONE department. I know of many other instances from other departments that are similar, including the Utah Highway Patrol. The more police we hire and "think" we need, the more often this will happen. Blame those who feel the need to put that many police on our streets. There is no need.
"The timing of this case, only weeks before the primary election, serves to remind people of the importance of having an independent, elected state auditor" Great Advice, that why Utahns should take heed and re-elect current state auditor Auston Johnson.
It is vital that your State Auditor be an independent voice with the courage to challenge members of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government when their actions might result in inefficiencies, or are financially unsound.
Auston is that independent voice. He is not encumbered by allegiances in the state legislature or any other office or branch of government.
Although it is great that the DesNews has pointed out a possible problem I would like to see the DesNews allow the Springdale police department to respond more fully. Right now It does sound a lot like what would happen to someone in Tijuana, Mexico.
Please follow up on Springdale's claim that a judge approved this practice. I would like to read any such document and understand the reasoning. Perhaps the reasoning is that tourists are likely to disappear and never show up or pay at a later date. That's the best I could anticipate reading and it still doesn't pass the smell test.
I guess that when you're the road into and out of (OK, I understand there's another entrance but it's not taken by most people) a place people want to see then it's assumed they can do whatever they want. How'd that anti-UN ordinance work out for them?
