Ron Paul has said time and time again: the goal is influence, and to call the Republican party back to a platform of limited government and balanced budgets. His strategy is working. Saturday in Minnesota he won 32 out of 40 delegates to the national convention. His supporters have taken many leadership positions in a variety of states. He is slowly changing the party back to a party that actually cares about liberty. Am I saying he's going to be the nominee? No. I'm saying he's going to win a voice at the convention, and leave a legacy of supporters in the future.
I've noticed a trend among many Mitt Romney supporters that I think is at work here. In some small way, deep in your heart, you wish Romney were more like Ron Paul. You wish he had a thirty year record of consistency, instead of switching his view on nearly every single issue. You wish Mitt Romney would speak more from the heart, and utter painful truths, instead of using calculated political statements. You wish Mitt Romney actually supported a balanced budget (con't)
(con't)
instead of endorsing the Ryan plan, which leaves us running deficits for 20+ years. You wish Mitt Romney didn't support obviously unconstitutional measures such as the Patriot Act or the NDAA. In your heart, you know that liberty has always been more important to American success than wealth creation, but your candidate is always talking about jobs and how wealth is created, and little about how to preserve liberty, so he must be right. And so you mock Ron Paul, without ever mentioning a policy you disagree with, because in your heart, you know America could use a guy like him. Someone who just says and does as he feels, making no calculation about whether it's popular or endorsed by the special interests and corporations. C'mon Mitt Romney supporters, admit that if Ron Paul had Mitt Romney's body and religion, he would be acceptable to you. Or are you really going to tell me you'd rather support the candidate who supports bailouts, mandates, growth of government spending (whether for military or domestic programs) and size? Because if that's what you want, we already have him in the White House.
