Environmental groups say a century's worth of trying to wring oil from rock has never proved economical...
Funny they never same the same thing about solar power or wind power. If shale oil received the govovernment subsidies that wind and solar do it would be viable as well, at least until the tax money dried up. Perhaps the environmentalists could let companies, using their own capital, determine they are willing to risk. Some bets will pay off, others won't, but as long as they are using their own money, that's OK.
