I take austerity to mean stop spending money that you don't have. Spending large amounts of money in a Keynesian "stimulous" is what Europe has been doing for years. They have now run out of "other people's money".

There is a lot of ecomonic pain in trying to right things, but returning to their status quo will not help. I'm not sure that the EU can do the things that will allow significant economic gowth. Those things are quite contrary their leftist nanny state mentality. If Frace elects Holland, with his promise of 75% taxes on "the rich," France will definitely NOT experience economic growth. Attacking the "rich" is an effective political ploy, but poor economic policy. Guess which one politicians care about?
