Despite the misinformation spewed ad nauseum by our jealous little friends on the hill, BYU did win a First Round game and officially finished with a 1-1 record in the 2012 NCAA Basketball Tournament, without Jimmer.

It's funny how Utah fans whine about BYU fans living in the past, yet that's exactly what they're doing. Tell me, what exactly has Utah done in basketball THIS CENTURY?

Since Utah's last win in the tournament:

BYU 185-54 (77.4%), 6 NCAA tournaments, 4 wins, 4 conference championships, 7 20+ win seasons
Utah 101-119 (45.9%), 1 NCAA tournament, 0 wins, 1 conference championship, 1 20+ win season

BYU 11
Utah 3

including 10 of the last 11

BYU leads the overall series 128-125
BYU is tied with Utah in total NCAA tournament appearances - 27
BYU is tied with Utah in total NCAA tournament wins this century - 4

As far as improvement, it would be nearly impossible for the Utes not to be better next season.

Out of 345 Division 1 basketball programs, Utah was 339th in scoring this year.

Here's a simple exercise that even a Utah fan should be able to do.

Go to the Official NCAA website at NCAA.com / sports / basketball-men / d1 and click on the "Bracket" link. Now tell me the names of the 8 teams shown in the bracket next to the First Four and First Round headings.

btw, by your distorted "logic", #38 RPI California, listed in the same bracket as BYU and Iona, and the ONLY PAC 12 team with a higher RPI than #40 Iona and #45 BYU, didn't even play in the NCAA tournament because the Bears LOST their "play-in" game, officially making the PAC 12 a one-bid, small conference league.

"Javon Dawson, Chris Hines, George Matthews, Anthony Odunsi and Kareem Storey were also granted scholarship releases,..." along with Dijon Farr.

Why sugarcoat it instead of just acknowledging what really happened? Coach small k booted every one of them to make room for better talent.

@Snack PAC

You might want to go back and read SoonerUte's comment again.
I'll help you out, he never said anything about BYU not getting a tournament win. He simply stated the truth which is that it took a near miracle to come back to beat IONA - IONA! - to reach the round of 64.
Your comment shows a lot of insecurity with your need to defend the play-in game the way you continually do.

Your insecurity simply shows the hollow arrogance of a fanbase that's bought into the notion that conference affiliation is the end-all-be-all of judging how good a particular team is.

#45 BYU beat a team IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT, #40 Iona, that had a higher RPI than EVERY team in the PAC 12 except #38 California, which LOST it's opening round game to #52 South Florida, a team ranked lower than both BYU and Iona.

btw, BYU's win wasn't a near miracle; it was simply a great comeback starting from 25 points down in the first half to cutting the deficit to 15 points at the half. Making up a 15-point deficit in the 2nd half to win 78-72 is hardly miraculous.

Bottom line:

BYU and Utah basketball have been heading in opposite directions for many years. While BYU has become a regular in the NCAA tournament, Utah sees a mass exodus of players every Spring because the basketball program has become so dysfunctional.

It's laughable that a program that hasn't won an NCAA tournament game in over 7 years should be trying to minimize ANY NCAA tournament win.

"Tell me, what exactly has Utah done in basketball THIS CENTURY?"

Sweet 16. Has anyone else in-state done any better?

"Sweet 16. Has anyone else in-state done any better?"

That's it???

The way Utah fans carry on, I was expecting at least a couple of Final Fours and a National Championship.

The truth is, Utah had a nice run in the 90's, but has done precious little since their 1998 final.

BYU 302-125(71%), 138-58(70%), 9 NCAA tournaments, 6 conference championships, 11 20+ win seasons
Utah 236-175(57%), 107-91(54%), 6 NCAA tournaments, 5 conference championships, 6 20+ win seasons

Interestingly, Kentucky, Utah's old nemesis, just won its first John R. Wooden (Player of the Year) Award

BYU has two Wooden Award winners - Ainge and Fredette
Utah has only one winner - Bogut

Overall, BYU has done MUCH better than Utah THIS CENTURY; it's not even close.

btw, it's been 14 years since Utah's NCAA Finals run. It was 14 years before that, that BYU won the 1984 National Championship in football.

When are Utah fans going to stop living in the past?

At least BYU has recent success (5 Top 25 Finishes in the last 6 years) to go along with its glorious past.

"Ute program on the rise..." That's a great basketball tee-shirt slogan!

It will go about as far as your other sport slogans such as 'Ute Baseball Omaha 2012' and 'Pac 10.2 South Division Football Champs 2011'

"Ute program on the rise..."

It's almost sad to see the Ute faithful getting excited about possibly improving to double-digit win, albeit, losing seasons...

In a few more years, the Utes might even return to the halcyon days of 2007-08.

Wait ... a BYU fan is making fun of t-shirt slogans, and fictitious ones at that? Wow, I guess someone forgot about the band of brothers ... which disbanded one of their Heisman hopeful brothers awfully quick.
And let's not speak of the unfulfilled quest for perfection ... especially when the rival team who didn't print the t-shirts were the ones to actually accomplish the great feat that same season.
T-shirts? BYU definitely knows t-shirts.

RE: Qwest Perfected

You say " good team recently, but they have only won 3 NCAA tournament games in 30 or so years." You could also say BYU has won 3 NCaa Tournament games in 2 years or 4 NCAA tournament game in 3 years. If I use your static, BYU is 26 and 14 in football over utah in the past 40 years. I'm skipping the fact you have owned us in the past 10 years. It is funny how we can make things look if we try.

RE: motorbike
You make IONA sound like a bad team. IONA beat Maryland, and St Joes. They won 25 game they lost to Prudue by One. Are you saying that Utah would of beat IONA?

Cottonwood Heights, UT

shorts -

No I'm not saying Utah would have beat IONA ... in fact Utah would've lost to most the country including IONA. That being said, IONA's RPI was way over-inflated and BYU should have thumped them. There's a reason all the experts were shocked to see them make the tourney.
But tell me, why are you so obsessed with Utah even though my comment had nothing to do with Utah?

Qwest Perfected

So now you're beating your chest about NCAA tournament appearances???

Before Jimmer byu was only known for first round losses. That Wooden Award winner that you're so proud of won a total of 3 NCAA tournament games in his entire career at byu. His biggest accomplishment was getting his team to the sweet 16.

If that makes you so happy, I suggest that you print a tee shirt and get a dozen or so Utah county businesses to sponsor it so you can hand it out to the mighty coug fan base.

The stats you throw out are so impressive it almost makes it seem like byu has been a powerhouse in basketball. But of course if you look a little further, you find out that they aren't. When was the last time they were a conference champion that wasn't a shared title? The Utes even managed to win the MWC conference a few years back tied with byu and New Mexico I believe - except the Utes went on to win the conference tournamnet that year too.

Maybe you can be proud of taking 3rd place in the WCC. lol

Qwest Perfected

Also, since you're so good at researching and quoting statistics, tell me how the WCC ranks in comparison with other conferences.

Everything I have seen had them ranked below the PAC 12 - but that just can't be right because byu plays in the WCC right? Something is just not adding up.

Payson, UT

And Baylor should of thumped BYU but they didn't. IONA was a good team on the bubble. As were many teams.

Qwest Perfected
"Maybe you can be proud of taking 3rd place in the WCC. lol" Third place in a conference where 3 teams make the NCAA is better then 11th place in a conference that places how many teams was that again?

Cottonwood Heights, UT

You got me there ... Baylor really should've thumped BYU.
