The argument only gets old (for Utah fans) because it's true.

The gold standard for judging the overall success of a season is final Top 25 rankings... it's ironic, therefor, that the only time Utah fans give any credence to Top 25 rankings is when Utah is ranked or when Utah beats a ranked team.

Top 25 Rankings During the Bronco/Kyle era

    BYU 5
    Utah 3

According to byu fans, it seems that every year Utah beats byu in football, byu was the better team and got snubbed by the refs or improved over the season and was the better team by the end of the season. That argument kind of gets old when Utah has won 7 of the last 10 meetings between the two teams and 2 of those wins have lead to undefeated seasons and BCS bowl wins.

Just give credit where credit is due. Utah won. Bronco agrees with me that byu fans are not the most educated fans about football, especially when you try to argue that byu was better than Utah after getting beat by Utah by 44 points.

    @pebbles

BYU continues to dominate, yes that is correct "DOMINATE", utah across the board in athletics. utah seldom wins a head to head matchup with BYU in the vast majority of sports, and when I say seldom it means very, very rarely.

    LOL!

So by your logic colorado is the better team as well? Oh wait, that sort of utah "fan" logic is only in play when you think it benefits utah.

    LOL!

    Snack Pac

Oh that's funny. A byu fan resorts to talking trash about Utah losing to Colorado because she can't talk trash about Utah losing to byu.

"By the end of the season, BYU was the better team, as the final rankings attest."

Go ahead and believe that if you will. I obviously won't be able to change your mind. I'll just go to sleep knowing that byu lost to Utah by 44 points and now byu's fans are feeling great about their program because the last 3/4 of their schedule they beat up on the nation's weakest teams.

The Utah byu game is played for a reason. The winner of that game is the better team that year, especially when it is a blowout.

I also remember that game in November when Utah lost to a pathetic Colorado team.

By the end of the season, BYU was the better team, as the final rankings attest.

"On the other hand, if BYU had Utah's schedule, the Cougars would have won the PAC 12 South with an 11-2 record, losing only to USC and either California or Arizona State"

Actually, if byu had Utah's schedule last year then they would still have to play Utah. So according to your logic they would have lost to USC, either California or Arizona State, and Utah. Don't you remember that game in September where Utah beat byu by 44 points. That game still would have happened had the schedules been reversed.

You are now trying to pretend like an actual game never happened.

"So your baseball team won a game, big wow,..."

BYU didn't just win A baseball game, the Cougars have beaten the Utes in just about every sport they've played.

    Women's Soccer - BYU 5, Utah 0
    Women's Volleyball - BYU 3, Utah 0
    Football - Utah 54, BYU 10
    Men's Basketball - BYU 61, Utah 42
    Women's Basketball - BYU 63, Utah 58
    Women's Swimming - BYU 162, Utah 138
    Men's Swimming - BYU 161, Utah 139
    Women's Gymnastics - Utah 197.55, BYU 194.45
    Men's Tennis - BYU 5, Utah 2
    Women's Tennis - Utah 5, BYU 2
    Baseball - BYU 9, Utah 8
    Baseball - BYU 9, Utah 6

Of the 12 head-to-head contests between BYU and Utah,

    BYU 9
    Utah 3

BYU has won the Deseret Duel four out of five times.

And the above list doesn't even include Track & Field, Cross-Country, Men's Volleyball, Golf, and Rugby, all sports in which BYU has won at least one National Championship.

Any way you slice it, BYU's overall athletic program is superior to Utah's.

BYU fans have nothing on the illogic of Utah fans who somehow think that finishing 4-5 in football, 3-15 in basketball, in any conference, let alone a "power" conference, impresses ANYBODY.

BYU finished in the Top 25 in football AND played in the NCAA basketball tournament for the FIFTH time in the last six years; Utah has only been able to do that FOUR times in their ENTIRE HISTORY.

Utah fans will soon learn that being a perennial bottom dweller in a power conference doesn't mean diddly.

  • Rock Of The Marne Phoenix, AZ
    April 6, 2012 8:22 p.m.

BYU fan illogic makes me laugh every time. Face it guys you're a mid major WAC football team and WCC member for everything else; nobody outside your fan base is impressed by that. Your football team (the most important sport to most) got beat six ways from Sunday by the Utes who had they not taken pity on the hapless DIV II looking cougs could have easily put up 70 plus points; in the last decade your team has won a whopping 30% of its games aginst the Utes come November now September; not to mention a 21 game series lead that will never fall. So your baseball team won a game, big wow, they're certinatly not Baseball powers like some in the PAC-12. Reality is a good thing Y fan, I encourage you to embrace it.

"if Utah had BYU's schedule last year, Utah would at least have an 11-2 record..."

    wishful thinking

If Utah had had BYU's schedule, Utah would have had at least 5 losses, losing to Texas, TCU and Tulsa and splitting with UCF, Utah St, Hawaii and Ole Miss, all ranked higher than that pathetic Colorado team that beat the Utes in RES.

    #17 Texas
    #20 TCU
    #35 Tulsa
    #77 Central Florida
    #80 Utah State
    #97 Hawaii
    #103 Ole Miss
    #107 Colorado

On the other hand, if BYU had Utah's schedule, the Cougars would have won the PAC 12 South with an 11-2 record, losing only to USC and either California or Arizona State (both ranked lower than the Tulsa team BYU beat in their bowl game.

    #12 USC
    #35 Tulsa
    #38 California
    #41 Arizona State
    #44 Washington
    #56 Georgia Tech
    #64 Arizona
    #66 UCLA
    #83 Wash St
    #87 Oregon St
    #107 Colorado
    #69 Pittsburgh
    #69 Pittsburgh

BYU's 10-3 record was good enough to get the Cougars into the Top 25, which is something to brag about, unlike the Ute's, who finished unranked, as usual.

  • KH Holladay, UT
    April 6, 2012 1:58 p.m.

Whatever helps you sleep at night Jealous U. All I know is that if Utah had byu's schedule last year, Utah would at least have an 11-2 record (beating byu and all of the terrible wac teams). Utah probably would have lost to TCU but I think they would have had a good chance to win against Texas. 11-2 at the worst and possibly 12-1. So your 10-3 record is nothing to brag about, beating a bunch of high school teams.

  • Duckhunter Highland, UT
    April 5, 2012 9:12 p.m.

    @devlishute

Nah it really doesn't bother me. You can keep posting it all you want and it still won't bother me. But it does bother you that utah was so incredibly mediocre and that they lost to one of the worst teams in college football and that they had a losing conference record.

  • Jealous U Alpine, UT
    April 5, 2012 7:51 p.m.

What I find funny is U stunk up your first season in the PAC 12 so badly, that U have to resort to a 7-turnover gift against an "irrelevant, mid-major, Independent" (or so U claim), to make yourselves feel like U accomplished something during your first year in the PAC 12.

And after all was said and done, the experts still said that BYU had a better season, overall, than U.

  • uteBusters Park City, UT
    April 5, 2012 5:51 p.m.

Unfortunately, what our little friends on the hill so blindly refuse to accept is that one game does not a season make.

Utah beating BYU doesn't prove Utah was a better team any more than Colorado beating Utah proved Colorado was a better team.

    Case in point:

BYU beat Oregon State on the road 38-28 (+10 points)
ASU beat Oregon State at home 35-20 (+15 points)
ASU beat Utah on the road 35-14 (+21 points)

By Utah fan "logic", BYU should have beaten Utah by close to the same margin as ASU beat the Utes.

PROVING that head-to-head scores are meaningless in trying to project results against common opponents.

One thing that can't be disputed, Bronco has never lost to a 10+ loss team; Kyle has lost to two of them.

Bronco was undefeated against the bottom dwellers of the MWC - Wyoming, CSU, New Mexico, and UNLV; Kyle lost to all of them.

I chuckle every time I see Utah fans posting 54-10, because I know how hard it is for them to reconcile Utah beating BYU, but BYU finishing in the Top 25 and Utah finishing UNRANKED!

  • DevilishUte Tempe, AZ
    April 5, 2012 3:13 p.m.

    Duhkunter,

    54-10!

I know that still eats you up inside to hear that score. I still chuckle every time I think about how much smack you talked before the game and then after the game you "were in Tulsa" for several weeks. What will be your excuse this year? Des Moines?

It's not worth bringing up CO. We all know Utah lost, choked even. What I find funny is BYU got beat so badly by Utah that you have to resort to talking about Utah results against other schools to talk smack.

  • KH Holladay, UT
    April 5, 2012 2:50 p.m.

    Duckhunter,

What is your point? Yeah, Utah lost to a terrible Colorado team. It was a huge let down. It is just funny to me that byu fans can talk trash about Utah when Utah beat byu 54-10 last year.

byu won 10 games last year against some of the worst teams in college football. byu's best win was against Utah State. The three losses byu suffered came against decent opponents. Yet because it was "another 10 win season", byu fans believe that it was a successful season and start yapping about how great its football team is.

I'll take an 8-5 record, play in the PAC 12, and put a beat down on byu any day over 10 wins over a bunch of nobodies.

  • Duckhunter Highland, UT
    April 5, 2012 12:22 p.m.

    @kh

"BYU would not have won the south"

And utah didn't win the south. They actually had a losing record in conference and lost, at home, to a 10 loss team that hadn't won a road game in 6 years and was widely considered the worst team in college football.

  • KH Holladay, UT
    April 5, 2012 9:21 a.m.

"there's no doubt BYU would have won the PAC 12 South"

How interesting. Do you really think so? Oh, but there is one problem: Utah is in the PAC 12 South. And we all know how byu fared against Utah.

So I disagree based on facts. byu would not have won the PAC 12 south.

"But can you imagine how BYU would do in the PAC 12 last year knowing they lost to Utah by 44 points?"

After watching Utah bumble and stumble their way through the weak PAC 12 South, and still come within a game of winning the division, there's no doubt BYU would have won the PAC 12 South - Bronco doesn't lose to 10-loss teams like Kyle.

"That 54-10 game must still be killing you."

Hardly, but it is laughable how much pain it's caused the Utes to beat the Cougars soundly, to have the Cougars play a "WAC" schedule, and yet have to endure seeing BYU finish in the Top 25, again, while Utah didn't get a single vote. And to follow that up with watching a rebuilding BYU once again winning a game in the NCAA tournament, while the Utes were once again playing couch potato.

In their first academic year as an Independent/WCC member, BYU finished in the Top 25 in football AND played in the NCAA basketball tournament. Of course the Ute faithful will try to minimize that, but the truth is, BYU has accomplished that little feat more times in the last 6 years, than the mighty Utes have done IN THEIR ENTIRE HISTORY!

    54-10 pales in comparison...

btw, U finished a distant 2nd to VERMONT in skiing, and tiny Denver has more than twice as many NCAA skiing championships as Utah. How hard can it be to be "good" at skiing when your main competitors are Vermont and Dartmouth?

  • KH Holladay, UT
    April 4, 2012 4:24 p.m.

    Duckhunter,

That 54-10 game must still be killing you. Congratulations on the 10-3 season, beating a bunch of wac teams and losing to the only 3 decent teams on the schedule. Utah was mediocre last year in football, I'll give you that. But can you imagine how byu would do in the PAC 12 last year knowing they lost to Utah by 44 points?

My gosh...you guys are looking at this all wrong. Just ask Ute fans. We are in the mighty Pac 10...we belong, you don't, 54-10 and your team quit, what tee shirt are you going to make this year. Oh and let's not forget the dominating 4-5 record in the Pac that each one of them will remind you that they were only one win away from the title game. In my whole life of being involved in athletics, I've never seen a group of fans celebrate mediocrity so much. In run down programs, new coaches first job is to change a mindset. In the Ute's fan base their needs to be a mindset change. While it's fine to be in a great conference...come in knowing you haven't done anything to make that conference what it is today. In the end the fact remains this....other than football, you really haven't had a lot to cheer about in a longtime when it comes to performing with BYU on the atletic field.
