I think the news outlets repeat all the past information to give context as to why this person is in the news at all. Without the history, this is just another person getting married. Hardly news.

With that said, both the Smart family "spokesperson" and the news media have made her life a very public one. Truth be told, I suspect she is as tired of it as we are.

You may not have the courage to acknowledge her past, but thank God that she herself does. Instead of sweeping it under the carpet, she instead has faced down and dealt with the facts of her past, with courage and truthfulness. Because of this, she now is in a position to enjoy a happy and fulfilling life despite her horrible experiences, and to inspire others to do the same.

"What I don't understand is why the article had to mention her horrible past."

Ruth, I totally understand your sentiments but without metioning "her horrible past" there would be no reason to mention her bright future. She would be no different than any other beautiful young women who gets married. It is because she has been able to overcome her past that makes this story so wonderful. And so while it seems distaseful to mention the details of the horrible experience she had at the hands of an unstable, evil man, it is necessary to inlcude those details to illustrate the great hope that all of us can look forward to, regardless of our circumstances. God bless Elizabeth for her bravery and for her example and may she have a life full of happiness from this time forward.

But for her past, the world would not care about her. That's why she is in the media. Add to this her public advocacy efforts. She will never escape her past. But she seems to be managing it and leveraging it for good. If her past is not to be examined, she should withdraw from the public eye completely.

Because, frankly, her horrible past is the only reason Elizabeth Smart is newsworthy. Many, many people have grown up to be productive, well adjusted people who marry well and live a happy life. What makes her unique from those folks? Well, we already answered that.

I don't want to sound insensitive, but without her past, she's a nobody. Just another average young person. Why would anyone want to hear of some blond Utahn's wedding in Hawaii if her past was ordinary?

The only reason she's newsworthy is because of her horrific past.

Elizabeth Smart has become an advocate for children who have been kidnapped. I don't think she's running from her past at all, she's embraced it and is using it to promote awarness.

Ruth --

Why do we talk about, study or make movies about Handcarts, or Holocausts, or Christ himself?

It was a "horrible past", but showed that the spirit of human determination, along with a stong Faith in a Loving God can heal the victim.

Elizabeth Smart's story continues to build on over comeing a terrible trial and "Victim-hood",
a building your own Happy Ending.

I hope that helps you understand "why".

I agree with the letter writer. These vultures shouldn't bring her past up every time they write about her. Because no matter what good she does, she will be known mostly by being a victim.

Wedding and Kidnapping don't belong in the same article. This is a positive experience and it doesn't deserve to be tainted by the memory of her tragic past.

@anit bush-obama
so basically you are going to ignore the other 8 comments that all already addressed your argument?

So why not report the other 1,000 marriages that occurred recently?

If Elizabeth Smart's past isn't important anymore, then why is her marriage worth reporting while so many others didn't get a write up?

The logic of the radical right is hilarious.

Then why is the writer bringing up the subject if she objects to it, just let it go and move on. But, it seems some people just have to try to get in the last word.

There is nothing shameful about her past is there?

Having been kidnapped and then surviving it is the only reason we know about her.

Yes all this is newsworthy.

Why? Because the part and her present and her plans for the future are interesting.

Oh and I suppose there are new readers who have never heard about her before in a country as large as ours, why not give them the past so they can appreciate why she is being written about?

If it wasn't for her past why would her marriage even be mentioned in the paper?
Of course it's going to mention it.

Anti B-O:
I don't think of her as a victim, even though she once was a victim. I think of her as a courageous hero. Can there be a hero without a tragedy?

You dwell on the negative yourself with your moniker. Why don't you try being known as a person who is PRO something instead of ANTI something. Is your memory tainted from a tragic past/present?

Elizabeth Smart's past is what it is. It is what defines her life up to a point and has helped shape what she is today. A poised, righteous, talented, strong young lady who has her priorities in order and her head screwed on straight. I admire her greatly.

If you think this family is trying to live their lives privately, you're sadly mistaken. They have been using family spokespersons and press releases for years to keep Elizabeth's name, picture, and life in the limelight.

Believe me, they will announce every pregnancy, every birth, every child's life story, etc.

If you want to help the family "move on with their lives", I suggest ignoring every one of these articles.
