"If you can't stop tuition from going up, the funding you get from taxpayers will go down,"
Shouldn't our politcal leaders set an example?
" If you can't stop spending from going up, the funding you get from taxpayers will go down,"
Seems political leaders are more concerned of taxpayers during an election year.
Worf, if debt was an issue for you...
then why would you support the Republican party?

George W. bush DOUBLED the national debt.
Ronald Regan, TRIPLED it.
Can you say the same about Obama?
No. You can only project what will happen. Not, what has.
As for education:
I can see why conservatives feel threatened by Americans having education.

The bottom line about higher education--we simply need to raise the bar.
We've become over-consumed with trying to help those who will likely never earn a college degree. Yes, we spend more money on those who likely should not be in college in the first place. Anchored by "No Child Left Behind," we have become a country that is afraid to progress forward by trying to save those who can't be saved or don't want to be saved.
Students don't understand that MOST of their higher education....2/3rds of it.... is paid for by somebody else. Tuition only covers 1/3rd of their expenses. Yet so many students accept taking Math 101 five times, skipping class because they figure they learned the material the first five times, only to fail again.
We need to re-structure our state handout that covers 1/3rd of the cost. Students on academic probation should not receive this handout.
Wow. I think I may actually agree with Pres. Obama on this one. Next Republican president: federal money is involved, so the feds are there already. Any interest in bringing down the deficit here, or at least using the money to help more students? I'm still suspicious on the details, though, so I'll be interested to see the actual legislation when & if it comes.
Pagan,
What's wrong with you? Obama has added more to the debt than all president put together. You know that, and you still come up with these lame excuses for the commander.
By the way, Michelle is currently enjoying another vacation on our dime in Vail Colorado. Aren't you tired of these arrogant rich millionaires spending our hard earned money on themselves. Yep! If the Obama's were republicans, you'd be posting all kinds of articles on them. Time to clear your mind and do some objective thinking.
Pagan-
Bush may have doubled the national debt and Regan may have tripled it, but Obama has spent more in 3.5 years then anyone on earth has. 5 TRILLION DOLLARS.
You certainly speak like a liberal. A lot of double talk and half truths.

If conservatives were truly concerned about the debt...
they would 1) Be upset when Obama added ONE dollar, to the debt...and 2) Be UPSET when Republicans...
double (Bush) and Triple (Regan) the debt.
Making the case that a President (Obama) should add zero the debt is absurd.
And so is claiming that Obama added 'more' to the debt when he factually has not Doubled the debt (Bush) or, Tripled the debt. (Regan)
After Iraq and Afghanistan, it is clear.
Republicans add more to the debt, than Democrats have.
Focusing on the dollar amount is a cheap shot.
Obama has NOT factually doubled the debt, unlike Republican leadership.
Federal Dollars subsidize higher education. This flood of money makes it possible for colleges and universities to operate inefficiently and waste our money.
Many professors teach only one or two classes a week. They spend the rest of their time doing "research". Much of this research is valuable. Some is not. Do we really need another research paper on geography? or Old English Literature?
Certain majors have absolutely zero value in the market place. Examples include: Ethnic Studies, Women's Studies, etc. I would not hire anyone that majored in such a field. It shows a profound lack of judgement and they probably have a chip on their shoulder. (If they didn't going in they certainly would coming out.)
Maybe professors should spend their time teaching (working for a living like everyone else). I don't mean to paint all professors with the same brush but putting their time in on value added activities, like teaching, as opposed to rehashing old research would be a good start.
Eliminate the Federal Dollars and institutions of higher learning would have to compete for students both in cost and quality.
Obama has added over five trillion (33%) to the debt in just three years. That's more than all presidents put together.
Sorry Pagan, but that's not fixing the economy. Your bias over shadows logic. Yes, and shame on Michelle for spending more of our money for yet another lavish vacation. Really sets an example. Hmmm! Will she even pay taxes on the money? Why do you excuse this kind behavior?

Worf, your obsession over vacations is showing.
George W. Bush took more vacations than any other President in US history.
1020 days.
FYI, that's almost x3 YEARS.
And, you are correct.
JFK was only in office, 1036 days.
George W. Bush took VACATION...
almost as much as jfk WAS, Presdient.
The reason why the cost of tuition keeps going up is that states around the country are pulling funding away from universities and colleges. Our own UW system received a $250 million cut, as part of Governor Scott Walker's budget "balance." Problem is, he didn't really balance the budget according to GAAP accounting, as he had promised. We still have a $3 billion dollar hole and another $143 million shortfall, in this budget, so he's handed the UW system another $46 million cut that must be enacted by July. Currently the state funds our UW system schools less than 17%. As recently as 15 years ago, it was over 30%. At what point does a state university system cease to be state sponsored? How are all of these cuts made up? Tuition hikes. Then the President stands up and blames the universities for hiking expenses. Meanwhile, here in Wisconsin, after gutting our universities and technical colleges, Governor Scott Walker has declared that there is a crisis in training opportunities. His answer? State sponsored privatization of services, naturally. People may not like "big government," but at least big government is answerable to the community.
