article--"he'll face the urgent task of inspiring the party's conservative core and rallying them to beat President Barack Obama"

If the 'party's conservative core' has to be 'rallied' to beat Obama, then they deserved to be stuck with the current President for 4 more years.

The rest of us don't--but anyone in the GOP or independents and some Democrats who would not willingly get behind Romney (should he be the nominee) who still doubt and whine and wish for someone else 'who is not a Mormon'--surely does.

The guy is handsome and comes across as a nice person. However, Romney is showing those tell tail signs of aging, just as President Obama has(worry lines and greying hair).
More importantly, people who so want to vote for him, cannot help but notice the lack of sincerity in his words. His speeches are so very scripted. Kind of reminds one of a person in a high school debate class. He is your friend, and you want him to "hit the ball out of the park". But, gosh, he is just "not that into it".
The desire must come from the heart and be evident to others, Mitt!
We feel sad that it seems he is unable to accomplish his quest.....his quest to acquire the one thing he does not yet have.
Happy for Mr. Romney and his family that they have a nice, comfy life to return to when this campaign ends. Honestly, they are such a fortunate group of folks!

Romney isn't inspiring the base for a variety of reasons. I'd prefer the main reason being all his negativity towards his opponents whether they be the President or the Republican field. I personally find those lines of attack self-defeating. I highly doubt that is the main reason he isn't as well liked by the party. I still don't feel Mormonism is that big of a factor regarding his likeability either.

The main factor I feel dogs Romney is that he doesn't come across as someone people can relate to. He is absurdly wealthy, appears to lack humility and has long been known to shift on major policies telling people what they want to hear rather than what he will or will not do. That last problem is one of sincerity. If the party does not believe they can trust Romney they won't be voting for him.

None of the remaining candidates come through as having the qualities that could capture the interest of the entire Republican base. There just is too much of a spectrum of interests involved and each candidate has too many flaws.

Conservative Core this the question that everyone in the United States needs to ask every single person running for Congress, Senate, and President. What is the needs of the United States and what are the wants of the United States? All the needs have to be met. The wants are those things, which are costing this country far more than We the People can afford at this time. Until the conservative core accepts the fact that is how business of government needs to be taken care of. We the People are heading down the wrong path. This election year is very important in every single election of Congress, Senate, and President. This issue should be made The Pledge of Needs for The United States and cutting the wants down to nothing until things we need are met.

Amen. At this point, faced with the prospect of another four years for this man to inflict untold damage to our economy and our liberty, conservatives shouldn't need to be rallied. The thought of a second Obama term ought to keep Americans awake at night.

The problem, of course, is that nobody running for the Republican nomination is better than President Obama and, in fact, they all would be worse for the country. The tought of any of the current Republican nominees serving in the White House should make Americans cringe with horror.

I'm hoping the contest comes down to the last State to vote ... Utah!!

And then Utah will give him just enough delegates to win the nomination. Now that would be sweet.

Four more years of continual growth in the economy
Four more years of the auto industry existing
Four more years of strong foreign policy restoring US stature to the rest of the world
Four more years with dangerous terrorists like Bin Laden being stopped or destroyed
Four more years where our leader won't be inciting war
Four more years of prudent leadership

Just remember that under Obama, the US has restored diplomatic ties with the rest of the world, saved the auto industry and established stronger federal laws governing health care. Considering how awful and destructive our Congress has been, our President has been widely successful in righting the direction the country was in. The US still has a long way to go, but despite the rhetoric from the Republicans we are in a much stronger position than we were three years ago when the President took office.

If Huntsman was still in the race, I would have hope for even better things. Since he wasn't embraced, I guess four more years of Obama is more than bearable.

Who benefit most from this type of headline?

Who is the AP promoting? Exactly!

It'll be a good contrast if AP writes about how the dems majority in the Senate don't want to be seen with Obama.

Once the nominee is selected, Obama will be the energizer.

Over the weekend, I saw all the protestors outside the Little America chanting against Romney and rallying for Ron Paul as Romney's motrocade pulled into the hotel.

I then saw all the news over the weekend about Romney seizing federal earmarks to "bail out" the 2002 Olympics -- the news showed old clips of Romney praising the feds for its support for the Games (including quoting from his book), and then more recent quotes from him declaring earmarks in general as "evil."

Romney's problem is that he's really a moderate, and he's had to bend over backward to try to look conservative when he's been very successful in business and Massachusetts government as a moderate. The result is that he looks like a flip-flopper or worse, as Santorum said yesterday, a hypocrite (when it comes to earmarks). All the infighting between the conservatives and moderates in the GOP will result in no candidate being able to unite the party.

Conservatives will not vote for Romney, and moderates definitely will not vote for Santorum or Gingrich.

Quite frankly, as the economy improves and as the troops continue to come home from Iraq and Afghanistan, Obama's re-election is virtually assured.

What amazes me is that there is any enthusiasm whatsoever for Romney any more. I have been closely following politics all my life and have never seen such a brilliant, subtle, across-the-board media orchestration to destroy a candidate before. They have even convinced people that the media is behind Romney although universities that do surveys on media bias have shown the media more than twice as negative about Romney than the second highest candidate. And they have gotten exponentially more negative since these surveys came out. So much of it is subtle with lies and negative words being slipped in that most people do not catch it and are being manipulated fully.

A nation that has learned not to trust the media is blind to what the media is doing to them. I have researched Romney's term as governor and he was very conservative. When running four years ago, McCain constantly attacked Romney for being too conservative. The lies go on.

The Republican party is offering NO solutions. They have voted NO on any legislation and worked to grind this country to a halt. They are focusing more on birth control than job creation. And...

Osama Bin Laden is dead. And the Iraq war they started, is over.

"Four more years of continual growth in the economy"

You're joking, right? 8.5% for the past 3 years is growth? What koolaid did you drink? Obama is a job killer. The fact that the unemployment rate hasn't gone to twenty percent under this president is a testament to the power of free-market capitalism. The economy is surviving DESPITE this administration, not because of it. Your's is the same argument form most Obama supporters. You have come to accept mediocrity and are so married to your party that you can't see this man for what he is. I don't subscribe to your idea of growth and prosperity. American can do MUCH better than this.

I hear that in Boise last week Ron Paul had twice the support turn out at his rally than Romney at his.

Romney didn't even win the caucuses in Maine; there was no final tally since the GOP stopped counting the votes when they achieved their desired result. BTW, why aren't you talking about this DesNews? There needs to be a third party to replace the GOP which does not represent the conservatives of the USA. Meanwhile let's make the vote honest.

Now that would be a shame and show how one who is mormon cannot vote with a clear conscience. I think your statement is pretty sad and tellings of the backwards politics in Utah and the voting processes of an average mormon uthan.

Mitt Romney could win the general election but he will not win in the republican primary. There are two basic reasons he can't win in the primary the first is that he is not tea partier no matter how much he tries to play one. The second is he is a Mormon and evangelicals will not vote for a Mormon. The republican party has yet to figure out that the country is not far right or far left, but middle right which is exactly where the real Mitt Romney is. The tea party and the evangelicals are going to guarantee another four years of President Obama.

This country doesn't need political hacks who put party first, we need moderates who will work with others regardless of party affiliation to solve the problems of this country. Unfortunately a moderate who puts country first can't get out of the republican primary election.

Everytime Mit moves further to the right, he is killing off any support he had in the middle. The moderate appeal is being killed everytime he opens his mouth, and the polls are starting to reflect that past. The longer he has to run in the primaries, the less time he is to build bridges back with the independents. Neither party now has a large enough base to win without the independents. Panders to only those on the far right only spells doom for a potential presidential run.... which has yet earned the right to run.
