I still believe there should only be 1 wrestler in each weight from each school that attends state, this depth thing is an issue for teams who want to win State but in the end the individual wins State and thats all that matters in a sport like wrestling. Congrats to all the individual State Champs you are the ones who should be in the spot light not Delta!!!
All schools have the same chance to take more than one wrestler per weight class.Just because Delta is so talented why complain.
Why the animosity towards Delta? 4 consecutive state championships is a substantial achievement, not a "Ball and Chain". They work hard for it.
As the qualifying for state. It is just like TRACK. You will you go. At state if you win you score for the team. Delta qualified 20, Bear River 23, Uinta 17, Payson 17, Wasatch 15. They all have teams that work hard.
Congrats to Delta and all the individual champions as well as those who placed. It took work to get there!
To correct typos and clarify:
Why the animosity towards Delta? 4 consecutive state championships is a substantial achievement, not a "Ball and Chain". They worked hard for it. It should be celebrated.
As to the concern about the quantity of wrestlers qualifying for state, it is just like TRACK. You must win at region to go to state. At state, if you win you score for the team. Delta qualified 20, Bear River 23, Uinta 17, Payson 17, Wasatch 15. They all have teams that work hard. Delta is by far the smallest school.
Congrats to Delta and all the individual champions as well as those who placed. It took a lot of hard work to get there!
"Back in my day" teams only took one per weight. The traditional "powers" still won the team title anyway. Now teams can qualify two per weight, and more kids get the opportunity to go to state. Every year you'll see two kids from the same team wrestle each other in some round, and sometimes in the championship. In my opinion, this rewards kids who work hard within the program they are in, and doesn't take anything away from the team title aspect. I congratulate Delta for winning the team title and having the depth to do so, this is a little hard for me to say because my son lost to a Delta wrestler in the championship, but I give credit where credit is due anyway. When Wasatch had their long string of state titles before Delta started their current string, we heard the same argument from other smaller programs, but the truth is, you need depth in all sports, not just wrestling.
As evidenced from the recent Jr. high state tourney, many other teams are strengthening their team depth and gunning to knock the Rabbits from their perch on top of the podium. A rising tide raises all ships, that is, as long as your boat's in the water.
At least Delta get's to score their JV they took that right way from the 2A classification. Great job Millard Co on bringing home the gold over the weekend.
To Yankees27, well stated.
