Big money as in Weber State? lol

Don't try and down play the Utah game as not "Big money" when it is top 2 on your whole schedule next year.

    Nice try

    Feb. 16, 2012 12:40 p.m.

8-5 is probably not far off though I don't think Washington St. will beat BYU in Provo (don't even recognize that name you referenced and I watch a lot of football). Utah also won't have Jake Heaps playing for them...

    Feb. 16, 2012 12:37 p.m.

Why should BYU give up a valuable slot on the schedule in September to play Utah when they could be playing a big money game?

The rivalry was good while it lasted but, "if he dies, let him die."

Wow, the cream of the crop from both fan bases is commenting on this article. I've seen more mature conversation in an elementary school...

Your predictions aren't bad, but let me offer my humble opinion as to how the Cougs will fare this season.

WSU- Loss, it'll be close, but Connor Halliday will pick apart the Y's secondary.
    Weber State- Easy win
@ Utah- Closer than it was last year, but Cougs won't be able to stop John White and a healthy Jordan Wynn at Rice Eccles. Loss.
@ Boise State- Even without Kellen Moore, the Broncos are nearly impossible to beat at home, regardless of how good your team is. Loss.
Hawaii- Win. Norm will put together a good team, but Hawaii won't be good enough to beat BYU at home.
Utah State- A close game, almost too close to call, but I'll give the Y the home field advantage. Win.
Oregon State- Win. The Beavers are still rebuilding.
@Notre Dame- Loss. The Cougs do not have the kind of talent needed to beat the Irish in South Bend in front of 80,000+
@GA Tech- Loss. The Yellow Jackets' rushing attack will do just enough to beat the Cougs.
    Idaho- Easy win
    @SJSU- Easy win
    @NMSU- Easy win
Bowl game- Cougs will get matched up against a weak opponent, unfortunately, and beat them easily.

    Final record: 8-5
Why? I just don't see any new or developing talent that will immediately help the Cougars be the type of team that can beat good teams on the road, and I don't see the speed that they need on defense to stop a quick strike offense like WSU or GA tech. They need a consistent running back, and won't be able to rely on the 1-2-3 punch of Kariya, Alisa, and DiLuigi, now that Kariya and DiLuigi are gone. Unless Alisa really steps it up and Quezada snaps out of his funk, the rushing attack will be mediocre at best. Riley is a great athlete and a fierce competitor, but he does not possess the quarterbacking skills to beat a team that can keep everything in front of it and force him to drop back and pass. The offensive line will be good as always, but they lost a lot of talent this year and have some holes to fill.

According to Ute logic ANY team that plays in an AQ BCS conference is a quality opponent. Right?

Is that Ute logic so hard to understand and apply to the BYU schedule or do we have some pride issues getting in the way?

When everyone was playing in the MWC it was always those BCS opponent games than meant the most. Does this logic somehow change when your team is part of an AQ conference and passing judgment on a non-BCS opponent's schedule?

Obviously those that put together these rankings determined that a 7 fumble fluke win for you guys did not really hurt BYU in overall rankings. It's a bitter pill I'm sure to see your opponent ranked higher when you flogged them but it is what it is.

I'm sure it was almost as confusing to understand as 'losing all the marbles' to the worst team in your conference, a team that had not won a road game in four years. That's one golden buffalo chip for the trophy case.

By the way... Tulsa was better, rankings dear brother, rankings.

I'm still looking to see where Utah ended up in the rankings, must be below BYU somewhere, very typical when taken into historical context and I'm still trying to figure how Ute fans say an 8-5 season was great when the real numbers that matter are 4-5 in your conference. That's where the glory is, isn't it? That's why the Utes are in a conference, right? To win division and conference championships?

The true conference numbers are < mediocre yet if that makes Utes happy... I'm happy

BYU schedule is getting better, no matter how you spin it.

ThomasJefferson says "Cougs 10-2.. better than Utes 7-5".
I suppose it doesn't matter to you that the teams compete against different levels of competition. The Utes play 9 BCS teams, while the Cougars are up to 5 this year.

Since "level of competition" is out the window, are you saying Lone Peak High School was better than both teams last year?

  • MiP Iowa City, IA
    Feb. 15, 2012 8:39 a.m.

    Sept 15th it is.

And I don't blame all of these BYU fans for wanting the Utah/BYU series to end. 44 point beat downs will deflate a fan base pretty quickly, especially when they only have 3 wins (all last second/minute victories)in the past decade against that team. Starfarer may have a superiority complex when it comes to the U, but I'm guessing the Cougar players don't.

BUT I'm curious why so many Y fans are claiming GATech as this awesome juggernaut, yet when Utah beat them two months ago all they could say was how "Tulsa is better."

Either 1) the schedulers must have forgot to schedule the Golden Hurricane instead of the Yellow Jackets, OR 2) Y fans have the inside scoop on how much improvement the GATech's 2012 recuiting class will have on the Yellow Jackets OR 3) Teams are simply better when they play BYU, because all teams have it in for the Cougars.

Been trying to figure out the BYU fan anticipation enigma for several decades now. On Sept 16th, I may get a better idea.

If BYU couldn't go undefeated in the Mountain West, they have no chance of going undefeated with that Indy-WAC schedule. One loss and the Cougies are heading to the Poinsettia Bowl. Games: @ Utah, @ Notre Dame, @ Georgia Tech, @ Boise State. BYU is bound to lose once, maybe twice, or possibly all four of their big road games this year, but they won't win all four games.

Deuce you show your severe lack of knowledge in scheduling by your comments.

There are some leagues which enforce the rule that once you start conference play there are no non conference games on your schedule. It will take a few years to develop the schedule. Also your ignorance shows via your commenting on weaker teams on the Y's schedule. You apparently do not follow the SEC and other conferences who try to do the same thing.

If you are going to comment, at least comment based on actual knowledge, not out of hate for BYU.

Donât assume it will be an every year occurrence in the future for BYU to be playing Utah, Kyle and his team have better things to do in September, such as playing a true home and home against a Big Ten opponentâ¦a real research and higher/advanced degree awarding school rather than the oversized Mormon social school down in Happy Valley. Why the LDS Church continues to allow them to field football in athletics is beyond me particularly since past church president Joseph F. Smith ordered it ceased back in 1902â¦perhaps something the powers that be at 47 East South Temple should revisit?

If the LDS Church really did the right thing with BYU they would pair Provo down to under 20,000 students, and take over the Southern Virginia campus back in Buena Vista, VA allowing a similar Rexburg sized student body there. This way the church schools can be focused on what they should be; undergraduate education. Advanced degrees (MS/MA and beyond) should be the domain of more secularly oriented universities. Utah State should have the football program, Law & Business schools, not BYU.

I too am excited for the schedule. It's an improvement over last year and I'm sure it will prove to be another great year for the Cougars.

Like a little boy going to his first 'monster truck' show, I can't wait for football again. It's going to be a great season, win or lose.

For the Utesies, it's going to be another nail biter... a new OC, with zero experience, a new QB or will they stay with Hays or will the fragile Wynn come out of rehab for the third time?

The anticipation is killing me and of course that new Ute rivalry of Colorodo will probably be the highlite of the season.

Deuce: Trying to spin the money. Although the money is very, very good compared to other years and other teams' situation, that is far from what the Indy move was about. Living in SC I didn't get to see the Cougs play but maybe once or twice a season. I, for one, was able to watch every game last year. The contract with the MTN network was too constricting. Sure we replaced New Mexico with NM State, and UNLV with Idaho, but I don't see where the program has been set back years as you say. Not playing for a conference championship...well only one team per conference wins that anyway. Sure it would be nice, but I'm happy with the situation right now. If a decent proposal comes along from an AQ conference I'm sure the powers that be at the Y will make the right decision. Until then I'll enjoy watching the Y each and every game. Go Cougs!

  • RockOn Spanish Fork, UT
    Feb. 14, 2012 7:19 a.m.

Perspective. Is this, for a fan, a better schedule than if they'd stayed in the MWC? This schedule is better. While playing New Mexico State, San Jose, and Idaho at the end isn't good, playing UNLV, New Mexico and CSU wasn't any better. Playing Utah at the end was great, but, they left the MWC so that end game wasn't going to happen either way.

BYU is better off with TV coverage since leaving the MWC. This year's schedule is far better than last years.

No doubt next year's schedule is far better and in either case a recruit can clearly see that his national exposure is far greater now than under the MWC and somewhat better than if he played for Utah.

A 10-3 record or better will be an outstanding season but not likely.
A 9-4 record is more likely and will still be good provided BYU wins its minor bowl game.
Anything less will be bad news. Not likely to happen either.

The 2012 BYU - Utah game is the last one contracted to be played. Holmoe says he will do anything to keep the game going in future years. Playing Utah is the same as playing Washington State or Oregon State. Utah is just another PAC 12 conference team. Any team from any other AQ conference can fill BYU's schedule. Many teams like Notre Dame and Boise State add luster to the schedule much more than Utah does. Personally, I hope the Cougars do not play Utah for several years.

    That's one soft schedule.

September 1 Washington State (first year under Leach = easy home win)

September 8 Weber State (patsy win).

September 15 @ Utah (we will see here with Utah's QB situation and Brian Johnson).

September 22 @ Boise State (Kellen Moore graduated and I think BYU wins.

September 29 Hawai'i (sorry Norm Chow but the Rainbows won't be prepared).

October 5 Utah State (could be BYU's toughest home test but BYU wins).

October 13 Oregon State (Cougars win at home against the Beavers weak road woes).

October 20 @ Notre Dame (this game is a toss up, I will take Notre Dame).

October 27 @ Georgia Tech (Loss here: GT is no Air Force as they are an athletic attack).

    November 3 Bye

    November 10 Idaho (easy win)

November 17 @ San Jose State (easy win)

November 24 @ New Mexico State (easy win)

End prediction: Cougars finish 9-3. They lose to Notre Dame and Georgia Tech back to back weeks. The other loss comes to either Utah, Utah State, Boise State, or Oregon State. The Cougars go 3-1 there but will lose one along the way. It will be a 10 win season if the match up is favorable in the Poinsettia Bowl. Many a Cougar will pump their chest over a 10 win season. Please remember though, there are four gimme wins (Weber State, San Jose State, Idaho, and Idaho State).

To: SportsFan, Orem, UT - You made my point exactly. By going independent, BYU has set their program back years. Yes, you are correct to say that it will take a number of years before the schedule has strength from the beginning to the end of the season. Other than the money, and yes, I am sure that is the #1 reason for this, BYU going independent does not make a lot of sense. Many of the other teams in the BYU athletic department are scattered throughout a number of conferences/associations. This is not very forward thinking about the program as a whole. But if the money was the #1 need, then they accomplished the task. I simply want to hear the Cougar AD stand up and say this for all rather than cover this with a story of exposure.

This is an intriguing schedule except for the last three weeks of weak teams. Most top 25 teams have at least three weak teams on the schedule, albeit earlier in the season. The Poinsettia Bowl is a nice bowl if BYU doesn't bust the BCS. Overall I like this schedule.

  • SportsFan Orem, UT
    Feb. 13, 2012 11:22 p.m.

    The Deuce

If you knew anything about scheduling, you'd understand the difficulty of an independent trying to schedule big name opponents in November when most teams are heavily involved in conference play. Non-conference schedules are drawn up years in advance, so it's going to take awhile for BYU to work some bigger names into their November schedules.

Have a little patience. Every BYU fan who's paid even the slightest amount of attention has known from the day BYU announced its independence that the first couple of seasons were going to be less than stellar, especially late in the season. Having 6 current or soon-to-be AQ teams on their 2012 schedule (Utah, Oregon State, Washington State, Georgia Tech, Boise State, and Notre Dame) is more AQ teams in one season than BYU ever played in the MWC or WAC. Two or three of those teams could even be Top 25 teams.

    at Georgia Tech

is going to be a very difficult road schedule, but a schedule that will quiet the critics if BYU does well.

Well, here we go for another year of independence. While I do think the schedule is improving, a closer look at the last 4 weeks of the season and one can see that scheduling these teams makes absolutely no sense. From Nov. 3 on, the season is irrelevant to the college football fan who is expecting key matchups and a race to the conference title. BYU will be forgotten by this time. While I see some true promise in many of the early games scheduled, we are back to the same thing as last year. If you don't beat Utah, Boise State, Oregon State, Notre Dame and Georgia Tech, your season is over or meaningless at that point. But, as the AD has put it, we can look forward to 2013. If I am a recruit looking at BYU, do I always want to be looking 2 years down the road? Is someone actually looking at what is going on or is this just a roll of the dice?

What a surprise to see two of our BYU-obsessed little brothers being the first to post about BYU's newly announced schedule.

As always, our little friends on the hill are already circling September 15th as the most important date on their football calendar.

Try worrying a little less about BYU and a little more about the PAC 12, and you might have a chance of finishing above .500 in the conference sometime.

It's a good thing the Cougars have that November 3rd bye to prepare for the challenging late season march through the dregs of the WAC.
