"BYU, Big 12 rumors still percolating"

Again?......

Where's Stockton ???

We're not interested...without BYUtv

Again!

Why should they be... with a combined access of 60 million homes worldwide with the ESPN/BYUtv matchup. Certainly don't need to be bottom feeding greedy like some programs that live off the championship status of other programs.

At the time BYU was being considered, we fans were concerned about the long term stability of the B12-4+2=B10. There were copious rumors of as westward migration by UT, OU, OSU, etc. I think the use of the word 'lukewarm' does not accurately describe our feelings about joining a potentially sinking ship. 'Wary' would be the word I would choose. If anything, our apprehension suggests we are indeed interested in playing in the B12, as long as the B12 isn't on its way to becoming the new MWC/C-USA. Of course, even that would be better than the schedule we have lined up for 2011/2012.

IF it happens, I'll be the first one to stand up and cheer, but I'm afraid as long as the DNEWS is around those rumors will always be "percolating."

If BYU is not fighting to get into the Big XII, the Big XII will not invite them. Why should they?

". . . but then I heard from all kinds of BYU people about how pleased the Cougars are with independence and how they wouldnât join the Big 12 unless the terms were just right."

So, I guess it wasn't about Sunday play, but more about BYU being happy that people could (if they REALLY want to) tune in to to see the weak WAC schedule.

What happened to those 60+ million viewers during the Helicopter Bowl? Yours was the 3rd least watched bowl game of the year. Even the Utah St-Ohio, Wyoming-Temple, and Marshall-Florida Int'l games drew a larger audience. It's as if we must conclude that it doesn't matter how many homes COULD get the game, it's how many viewers WOULD watch the game. At by last count, that was something like BARELY 2 million. That was your top viewed game of the season. Ours had a viewership of over 4.1 million.

Edge: Pac-12 Utah.

I saw that quote too, and was surprised to hear that Big 12 officials - or even Barry Tramel -- would have been reading the rabidly, frantic and emotional puffery of Y fans. And even THEN, to hear they may have even been taken seriously....that's good stuff.

At any rate, I think this article will now bring about a new wave of back pedalling from cougarnation. Let's see if Duckhunter is still adamant about NOT joining the Big 12, but rather preferring to remain an Indy-WACer.

hahaha byu wanting sooo bad to feel wanted... poor things.

@sportsfanforlife Your reading comprehension must not be where it used to be. Pretty sure the article said BYU fans like Indy and are wary of joining the Big 12.

Just because your team needs to ride coattails of others to feel important doesn't mean other teams are like that. Superior programs can stand on their own.

Not sure where you're getting your numbers, but last I checked the Sun Bowl had a viewership of 2.7 million, which was good for a 10% drop from last year (I notice that you neglected to mention that part...convenient). The Armed Forces bowl had 1.8 million viewers, which was up by 8% over last year.

Interesting...BYU actually helped the Armed Forces Bowl ratings, while Utah and the Sun Bowl? Not quite. But hey, there's always next year, right?

Go Cougars!

Shouldn't the trolls be talking about the 'gutsy move' in hiring their new OC?

25 yr old 'child' prodigy OC, that's awesome guys. Certainly more newsworthy than an old rumor.

Funny you say that... you, being a troll also, have more important things to talk about on YOUR team's boards. Quick to call em out but you, yourself, do not follow your own accusations.

So which is it? One day independence is the better than a conference and is the best thing going just look at our exposure and our scheduling is so great, and the next day it's Gee the big 12 would be so sweet and a step in the right direction? Are BYU fans really panicked or just spinning everything as usual?

Interesting that Texas seems to like the idea, but for others, BYU isn't hungry enough. I'll say it again: other weaker brands want BYU to surrender what we already have for the greater good of the average teams, while powerful brands like Texas like what BYU has. They may or may not like BYU, but they like what we have.

From a competitive standpoint I'd love to see BYU in the Big 12. It would help with recruiting and maintaining national relevance. However, from accomplishing the mission of BYU, I'm not sure Big12 gets BYU any closer to what the church wants from the athletics program than remaining Independent / WCC. As a fan, I'm torn because I salivate at the opportunity to see BYU play Texas, Oklahoma, Ok St., TCU. However, the realities of where the big conferences are headed (somewhere between professional sports and traditional collegiate athletics) has me hoping the church says they are fine defining its own destiny. For a state school like Utah, it is an easy decision because it is really the only way to survive. For a church run institution, the goals are not aligned with what the BCS conferences are trying to achieve. I guess it is a win-win decision as long as BYU sticks with what is most important.

Why all the talk going again. Talk, talk, talk, talk, etc. I'll believe it when or if they do and we BYU do JOIN! Let them work together and we fans and medias won't know anything till we see BREAKING NEWS! So, looking foward to Sept 2012 better tougher season and those late cupcakes (again).

Wow! The Helicopter Bowl sure did attract BYU's "Mythical" 60+ million viewers with a bowl TV rating of just over 2 million viewers. The Sun Bowl still takes the cake with a 4.1 million viewers. Hmmm! I wonder why?

I read those same numbers Naval Vet posted in the Salt Lake Tribune about a month ago.

Sun Bowl tv ratings > Helicopter Bowl ratings (by more than double)

truecoug1 is right. Where did you get those completely incorrect numbers from exactly?
hahaha, you act like the whole nation tuned in the ute games all season long, yeah right!
I am shocked you didn't bring up the Sagarin. Nice spinning, keep it up.

Bleedcrimson

by more than double?? huh, 2.7 and 1.8 how is that more than double? Your math isn't so good. where are you guys getting this 4 + viewership number. out of thin air I am guessing.
