First, for the media: you have no right to be there and the judge has every right to kick you out, especially in Family Court. If he is charged as an adult, then you can have your quarrel. The public and justice is best served by you taking your circus out of the courthouse.
Second, I hope the prosecution has more evidence than what they've leaked to the press (again, ridiculous) as right now all the evidence is circumstantial. Even a mediocre defense attorney could win this case as it stands right now.
Let's not ruin these kids' lives. We don't have to know every detail.
Good for the judge!
I FIRMLY believe that trying children as adults is wrong.
1) Rather than put SOME 17 year olds in jail for 10 years and SOME 17 year olds get counseling and community service... Why not treat them equal? Better yet... how qualified is a court at deciding different people's level of maturity and accountability?
2) If people want a different system where we classify age groups by 1-10, 11-14, 15-16, 17, 18... then I'd be fine with that. But while the law says 18 is an adult, I think we should practice that. How is that all that crazy?
3) How many 18 year olds (and younger) are living at home with mom and dad? If that's the case, they are NOT living how most adults live and holding them accountable to adult standards isn't very accurate or reasonable or fair. Living on one's own changes perspective on life and we all know it.
4) Sure, punish the kid. He's already regretting this enough no doubt. Just don't ruin his life with a felony.
