I think if we got extremely lucky and signed this kid at BYU, I think it would be for only 1 year--then off to the NBA.

I'm pretty sure that Jabari Parker is not 260 lbs. Last i saw he was 6'8", 220.

I would hate to get my hopes up for this kid.. and then have him go elsewhere, but he'd be a great talent to have at the Y!

He's not just the No. 1 high school junior in the country but by many is considered the No. 1 high school player period.

The DesNews needs to just stop teasing BYU basketball fans with the Jabari Parker talk. The kid is a great talent and will likely end up at Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, Michigan State, Kentucky or the like. He is a lock for 1 and done. He is a top 5 pick whenever he decides to come out. Just stop with the Parker to BYU stuff you get too many fans hopes up.

Open letter to Jabari Parker:

If there is a remote chance that you read this note, let me just say, my BYU experience was the best. Spent two year at UT Austin and never felt at home. The priorities of the other students just did not match mine. At the Y, I felt like I was coming home. Mind you I was raised in the Midwest, like you. So, climate and other things were different and took some getting used to. But the people are fantastic. Moreover, because you are more than just a great basketball player, BYU is an excellent academic institution. I learned how to think for myself and reason through problems. Most importantly, BYU also focuses on spiritual growth. Other universities will help you reach your potential as a basketball player. A few of them will create opportunities to reach your potential academically. But none will help you point you to your spiritual apex like BYU. From one Illinoisan to another, choose the Y.

Re: UU32

Is it just jealousy that Utah has absolute zero shot of landing him, that you needed to point out the obvious? I realize there is little shot that he'll choose BYU but BYU fans will hope. That's what fans do. Like BYU fans hope to make a run to the Final Four this season. Like Utah fans hope to have double-digit wins. Both seem about as equally unlikely but there's always hope!

giantfan - I cheer for BYU and Utah basketball, but thanks for re-stating the obvious.

@UU32

Fans will get their hopes up regardless. I for one enjoy reading about him. The truth is there is a chance, however slight, that he will choose to attend BYU. His his mother attended BYU. He is LDS. BYU is a quality basketball program. There are a lot of reasons for him to make the choice to do so and if more than basketball enters his decision making then BYU would probably be the logical choice for him as it is the one and only university that actually seeks to help him fulfill all of the goals a good LDS youth would have.

My guess is basketball will be the over riding factor in his decision and he will probably go to one of the top 5 basketball schools, and who could blame him for making that choice? I wouldn't. But he may choose BYU, it is a real possibility, much more likely than utah ever being a football power in the pac12 to be honest with you.

Keep on reporting things Dnews, I like getting my hopes up.

If the thought of playing in the West Coast Conference is appealing to Parker, then I sincerely doubt he's a #1 prospect in anything.

Speaking of getting your hopes up... Has the Big 12 called yet?

Jabari is a positive role model. He deserves a lot of credit for what he does on and off the court. More stories like this are needed in the news (which would happen if more athletes were like Jabari). Best of luck to him not only this season but in his future college and what looks like an NBA career. Again great kid. Great story. I just don't think it belongs in the "Blue Roundup" section.

giant fan:

UU32 "cheers" for both BYU and Utah, but his modus operandi is to post backhanded compliments about BYU on BYU articles while he plays the "I'm a Utah fan card" and passively agressively goes after BYU fans on both BYU and Utah articles when BYU fans make fun of or say anything negative about Utah with the "hey you can't say anything to me I'm a fan of both teams routine."

gored: or if he wants to play almost every game on national tv where scouts can watch him with their feet propped up in their PJs while sitting in their living room.

The perfect scenario for Cougar fans, is this kid comes to BYU for the one and done, and then the Jazz some how get him. Now that would be perfect.

@howie

I have stated many times on here my preference for BYU to remain independent. I do not want them to go to the Big12. Only schools like utah need conferences where they can ride on the coattails of their betters since they are incapable of standing on their own. Most of the schools that could make it on their own still choose to be in conferences since they can dictate to weaklings, like utah, in their conference and get everything they want. But they don't have to be in them. Only after thoughts like utah have to have a conference.

@Duckhunter

So are we to understand that as a school that can make it on its own, BYU has simply "chosen" the alternative option of independence over joining a conference?

Really?

And which power conference could BYU join, if it so chose?

Oh, I guess that would be none... Because no power conference will invite BYU.

The truth is that BYU "chooses" independence because it has no other options.

Being a perennial "power" conference cellar dweller proves NOTHING -- call us when U actually do something besides serving as a punching bag for the big boys of your "power" conference.
