"SPRING Forward, FALL back." What a hassel. Pass the bill. Let UT (and AZ) lead the way for the rest of the nation.
Daylight Stupid Time - that's what we call it at our house. Ask any farmer what they think of DST - they will tell you the cows and chickens don't care but the people having to get up at 3 am instead of 4 am do. As the old Native Chief said, "Only a white man would think that you can make a longer blanket by cutting a foot off the bottom and sewing to the top."
I'm glad they voted not to pass this along. I love daylight savings time and I wish we could stay on it year round. I think Arizona is out of sync and should change to match the rest of the states surrounding it.
I am in favor of the bill. It already causes disruption with DST as it currently stands- get rid of it .
Yes do away with it....its dumb!
Te concept of doing away with DST in dumb. The value of extra Dalit in the summer is tremendous and the challenges are greatly over stated. I wish this whole issue would just die. Leave DST alone.
@dh48: Please list the values you claim would go away.
@KSM's dad: I'm from AZ and think DST is a joke. So do all native Zonie's. No one there wants to become a follower of tradition just for tradition's sake.
Also, I have yet to realize any reduction in my power bills as the nitwits in DC claimed I would.
@Shaun: DST supporters won't understand your analogy...
I moved to Hawaii from Utah six years ago. Hawaii has never participated in DST. Everyone here thinks it's ridiculous. I had no problems adjusting to no DST. However, I have to admit that it is a pain in the butt trying to remember what time it is in Utah for family or the East Coast for work events. In fact, almost no one here knows when the changes occur UNLESS you have family on the mainland and that forces you to keep track so you know when to call them and when it's too late. Anyway, it works and I don't miss it but it does require a bit of extra work figuring out what time it is elsewhere.
"...This is not a publicity stunt, and this is not a message bill," said Rep. Jim Nielson, R-Bountiful...".
Of course.
"...Rep. Brian King, D-Salt Lake City, opposed the bill. 'I'm ambivalent myself, but I think we ought to spend the time debating more pressing matters,' King said...".
Thank you Mr. King.
Good. At least one attempt by a legislator to keep Utahns in the dark won't see the light of day.
I want to stay on it year round. I like the extra light at the end of the day and I hate that it gets so dark so early in the winter. Just keep it on DST year round and then we won't have to change it at all. I don't mind going to work in the dark but I hate coming home with my head lights on. I want more time to be outside and have light while I doing it. I don't think it is the effects of DST that bother people it is the changing over that gets to them.
I wonder if the "Honorable" Representative King said the same thing in 1966 when Congress first mandated daylight "saving" time, and when they extended it in 1986 and 2005. Did he say Congress should "spend time debating more pressing matters"? Or does he just say this when we discuss getting rid of this silly practice?
I lived in Arizona for five years prior to moving to Utah...prior to Az I lived in SoCal....and must say I really appreciated not having to mess with the clocks twice a year. What time the sun rises and sets really makes no difference in my opinion...just as long as it rises and sets. Lets stop playing games with our clocks with the idea that somehow we are magically making the day longer. Lets just be thankful that the sun does rise and set on "its" standard time, regardless of any artificial tinkering with the clocks.
@ksm's dad: It sounds to me like you're a follower rather than a leader. I have always rejected the "everybody's doing it" point of view. When I lived in Arizona, I took pride that we were our own state and didn't have to do what everybody else did. I think it's much better to think for one's self rather than be a blind follower.
I LOVE Daylight Savings Time. Awesome summers with light until late into the evening.
I lived in Arizona where daylight savings time is not observed. It was heaven not having to worry about changing time twice a year and not having to adjust our sleep. For Paul Ray to say it was so difficult is just silly. We would adapt just like Arizona has adapted. They are Mountain time part of the year and Pacific the other part, but they seem to manage just fine. I don't understand why the committee won't just let the full house cote on it. What the heck are they afraid of?
