Mr. Gurney. A question. You said the instate battle is "about even" this year. By my calculations, between the 3 recruiting sites, there are 14 different players listed in the Utah top 10. Of those 14, Utah will get 8, BYU 2 and 4 out of state. How exactly does an 80%/20% split equal "about even?" Nice spin.

@williary A recruiting battle would indicate that both teams have offered the same recruit. While the U of U may have more of the top 10 Utah prospects, did BYU offer them as well? And I wouldn't count Zach Lindsay since his scholarship was pulled by BYU after he committed to BYU.

But this is Utah's best recruiting class ever, congrats.

That's where this gets tricky. BYU has a solid reputation lately of "pulling" scholarship offers when recruits decide they're not really considering BYU. Ricky Heimuli, Harvey Langi, Manti Teo, Zack Lindsay, Moana Ofaganague, the list goes on and on.

Here are the facts that we know.

BYU has a very limited recruiting base. The largest base is the state of Utah. To actually believe that they were only interested in 2 of the top 14 players in their largest recruiting base, just not believable.

The fact is that in their largest recruiting base, BYU has picked up commits from less than 20% of the top players. Not a good sign. Even if they've "pulled" schollies from kids who told them no thank you.

That's quite the statement "BYU has a solid reputation lately of "pulling" scholarship offers when recruits decide they're not really considering BYU" Lindsay wasn't wavering in his commitment, he simply didn't meet certain requirements (A public forum is not the place to discuss what requirements he didn't meet).

Did Gurney say that BYU only offered 2 of the top 14 Utah prospects? I've never heard nor said that.

Have you looked at prior years? How does this 20% of the top players compare to other years? I'll bet you haven't even looked. Or maybe you have, it seems that you'd rather cheer against BYU first and be a "fan" of Utah 2nd. I sure hope I'm wrong

Anyways, congrats on the stellar recruiting class (especially the Rivals site).

Utah's recruiting class is shaping to be the best recruiting class that any school from the state Utah has ever had. Utah all ready has commitments from five four star recruits. Furthermore, it has been reported that four star recruit Brandon Fanaika is heavily considering decommitting from Stanford to go to the Utes. Also, other four star recruits like Will Latu, Pio Vatuvei, Hiva Lutui have high interest in Utah. I was expecting a boost in recruiting from being in the Pac 12;however, I wasn't expecting recruiting to jump this dramatically. Also, there has been a lot of hype around Tenny Palepoi. Not sure what he is ranked, but I read that Utah is listed number on his list. Furthermore, watch for solid three star recruits like Polo Manukainiu, Brandon Marsh, Moana Ofahengaue, Carlos Lozano, and Raymond Ford to sign with the Utes.

Anyone know what Utah's scholarship limit is for this year? They are up to 23 commits, with, from what I've heard, at least a couple planning to grayshirt. Ofahengaue is reportedly down to deciding between Arizona and Utah. Lutui down to USC and Utah. Will Latu down to Oklahoma and Utah. I hope they land at least one if not two out of the three corners Brandon Beaver, Alphonso Marsh and and Ray Ford. Butters, BYU did get the best defensive player in the state in Hinds, but if the Utes can get Manukainiu, I think that would more than make up for it. Best case scenario, I would say we land 2 more OL, 2 CBs, a LB and a DL, which would put us at 29 total, with the possibility of 2 or 3 not affecting us this year due to grayshirts and missions. Exciting times, for sure!

@4D 5 four-star recruits? Is that what Rivals has? Scout only has 2 with 1 being a JC guy. And Fanaika is not going to Utah, that made me laugh.

But "Utah's recruiting class is shaping to be the best recruiting class that any school from the state Utah has ever had" made me laugh even harder. Quit trying to brag before anything has happened. The state of Utah athletics has nothing to do with you.

@ StGtoSLC No team from the state of Utah has ever had five four star recruits in one recruiting class. You can verify that from all the recruiting websites. Rivals has Kelvin York, Justin Thomas, Cedrick Poutasi, Visesio Salt, and Chase Hansen as the five four star recruits. Like I said before, Utah is on the verge of signing at least two more four star recruits. Its still impressive having this amount four star recruits regardless of its rivals or scout. You have to admit if the Y had a class like this you would be pretty happy. Brandon Fanika is actually taking a recruitment trip to Utah this weekend. Tom Cella actually talked to Fanika over this past weekend. Cella was on 1280 the zone today, and Fanika told him that he was considering changing his decision.

4D you're preaching to the choir, it's SPgoofyft I think you were meaning to direct that to.

SPgoofyft: January 24 "Rivals250 offensive lineman Brandon Fanaika committed to Stanford late last month during the Offense-Defense Bowl, surprising almost nobody in the process. It had been rumored for months leading up to the decision that Stanford was the clear-cut leader, with Utah a close second. Fanaika had previously scheduled a trip to Utah in January, and decided to honor that commitment this past weekend. Utah rolled out the red carpet for the talented guard however, and things with Stanford appear a bit murky now with only one week to go until National Signing Day."

Hope that catches you up to speed.

@SPgoofyft Utah's class probably is the greatest recruiting class ever from the State (on paper). We all know you really can't judge a class until years after. But, if you look through all 3 services (ESPN, Scout & Rivals), Utah actually has 7 4 star recruits & is in the mix for a few more.

The star ratings really don't mean squat. There have been too many 'big' stars fall and then a lot of 'little' stars that have risen beyond expectations. It just depends on who the prognosticators like and how far they want to elevate them. How many times have we heard Bronco (bYu), Kyle (UofU) and even Gary (USU) say time and again that the star rankings are totally meaningless when it comes to D1 ball.

Those that really know the game and what is required to succeed in D1 will never waste their time placing stars and ratings on HS kids. Either they have "it" or they don't. College ball is a great equalizer.

ablackett23, if you count 247Sports as well, the total becomes 8.

If this year's recruiting class is any indication of how BYU will fare as an independent, BYU should immediately beg Craig Thompson for membership in the MWC.

It's funny to listen to BYU fans today. Years ago when BYU's recruiting was better than Utah's, all we heard about was how many stars so-and-so had, the average star rating for the class, etc. Even when Jake Heaps walked into Iggy's and walked out with a BYU hat, the DN boards were positively giddy with Y fans letting us all know that Heaps was a five-star QB.

Now that Utah is cleaning up in recruiting - especially compared to BYU - what are the BYU fans saying? "The star ratings really don't mean squat."

As the Church Lady used to say, how conveeeeeenient.
