Does this mean class sizes will be larger or several custodians will have to be let go as result of the financial settlement? I wish there was more common sense to this whole thing, meaning that the parties that need to be held the most responsible are the people that actually engaged in the alleged acts (i.e. the student wearing the hooded pillow case, the students sending the texts etc.).
The Canyons district adminsitration continues to make mistake after mistake. Doty needs to be gone! It's too bad Mark Montague had to deal with the mess the Canyons made with this issue. It's also frankly a shame that they've made Draper high school a laughingstock with their terrible mis-handling of the Cougars mascot issue. It's time for a change at the Canyons, Doty needs to be fired immediately! Get rid of him, he's an embarrasment to every student, teacher, administrator, and parent of the Canyons school district.
This from the same politically correct people that won't name the mascot of the new high school in Draper after the Cougar (the animal kind, not the woman kind).
This guy got the shaft all the way around from people that are so politically correct, that I, if I lived in Canyons area, would be very worried about the quality of edumacation my kids would get from Canyons School District.
This Vice Principle did everything he could have done to smooth the situation at Alta over and followed district proceedure. He should have sued them civily. I'm sure Brian Barnerd would have taken the case.
I live in Canyons district, so my dollars, likely (and rightfully) quite a few of them will be going to pay Mr. Montague and his lawyers.
Every dime needs to come out of money that would have been spent, or more accurately, wasted on the current Superintendent, and his bloated staff of sycophants.
This incident was handled appropriately by the principal from the start, and only the meddling by the uber-politically correct District made a non-event into a "racist incident."
Not another dime for Canyons in taxes. They need to cut spending, and fire the incompetent leadership that is spending too much, hiring to much staff, and doing nothing to support the actual educators in the classroom or school principals.
Knowing that I am an outsider, it appears to me that the voters of the Canyons School District may need to consider voting out the current Board of Education. Is the board backing these apparent administrative incompetents? If they are then you need to start at the top - the School Board.
So how much did the Canyons School District have to payout to right their wrong? One of the main problems with our public school system are the administrators. They have a lot of knowledge ..... but lack the intelligence to use it.
Things are REALLY going well in this Canyons District aren't they? Glad I moved out of there.
Jordan is laughing all the way to bank...
I'm starting to think that you all did us a favor by jumping ship on us. Oh, sure, things have been rough financially over here on the west side, but it is nothing compared to the circus you are running in the Canyons district. Keep up the the good work!
Mark Montague is one of the best men I have ever met. Outstanding counselor, vice principal and principal. I am glad to know that his reputation was not tarnished officially and that this issue was settled. This had nothing to do with money folks but everything to do with reputation and integrity, which Mr. Montague has in spades. The Canyons School District has a problem in Dr. Doty. There is leadership and there is intimidation. He has the latter down easily but does not have a clue about the former.
It does seem like the name being brought up when there are problems is Doty. Even the issues Coach Hamilton had while at Alta. I completely understand the need to investigate. But it just seems someone is on a witch hunt when it comes to Alta.
One more mistake (in my opinion), integrating 9th graders into a High School is bad idea.
A case of micro-management at its lowest.
This school board is out of touch with everyone. Vote them all out and start over. Canyons school district is a joke. Not just in Utah but across the nation.
This has less to do with one incident that triggered the whole brouhaha than a long sustained indifference to racial problems that were allowed to fester for years and years during the days of Jordan District's administration. Why they were powerless to address Widenburg's insensitive incompetence towards the experiences and concerns of his few minority students is the real question our society must address openly. Widenburg had a long list of problems that all came to a head right before he retired. Mr. Montague was unfortunately caught up in Widenburg's flameout at the end. He was a teacher that made a difference in my life. I am glad that he was able to restore his reputation despite what he had to go through and that Canyons could handle the constroversy involved in all of this instead of wishing it under the rug or telling people to "not be so sensitive". I support the efforts of Superintendent Doty to fully air these issues and investigate the concerns of those whose voice isn't powerful enough despite the scorn and abuse loaded on him by Alta community--that is leadership.
