Dear Mr Romney, Sir

Watch the State of the Union with Us

On Tuesday night at 9:00 p.m. ET, President Obama will give a State of the Union address to Congress. He'll talk about where we find ourselves as a nation and lay out his agenda for the year ahead.

His religion has nothing to do with his drop in recent polls. It may contribute to why some didn't want to vote for him in the weeks before, but this is not anything new that these people hadn't already factored. What changed was that it has become more clear what type of business Romney ran, and most people know that running the government is far different that taking over companies and putting your profits in off shore accounts so they can be tax free. Its not the style of business most people have faith in that will really generate jobs.

It is too bad in some ways because I do think Romney would be good at looking at government and finding ways to do things better, cheaper. But the duck and weave he has been doing on his income, relavations of off shore accounts, paying very little income tax, its not the kind of person a blue collar worker in South Carolina will vote for. Mormon, baptist or whatever.

I could be wrong, and well find out tomorrow night. Enough of playing the religion card though. it is getting old.

The Mormon church has only donated millions of dollars with lots of man power to rebuild Evangelical churches in the south after hurricane Katrina.

How can this non traditional Christian cult faith make a difference?

Excellent article. Mitt Romney is clearly the best choice in my opinion, based upon his strong integrity, his outstanding leadership skills, and his vast knowledge of the business world. I sincerely hope the people of South Carolina see that he is America's best hope for turning our economy around and restoring greatness to America. I would trust him any day over Newt Gingrich, whom I believe is a brilliant man but lacking in moral character. It will be interesting to see how South Carolina votes. We'll know soon.

Getting really tired of articles over the months implying that not voting for Mitt Romney also means your anti LDS.... Its getting a bit absurd.

Sorry, the religion card is the reason Romney can't get more votes from evangelicals or the religious right. They are blinded by the anti-Romney movemnt and will show their hypocrisy by voting for a cheating husband with two ex-wives who claims to have found religion than for a man with integrity and a 40+ year marriage who has been strongly living his religion all his life.

The nation will retain Obama for another four years if Romney isn't the nominee.

The more I have watched Romney the less I have liked him. He is so controlled and scripted it is hard (if not impossible) to find something inspiring to rally around him. He is just cold facts and figures, which have their own place and purpose, but lacks the necessary combination of a bold plan and passionate presentation to move people to vote for him.

I'm sure he is as intelligent and gifted as his career suggests he is. Perhaps there are only a few people who could complete Harvard's dual MBA/JD program and fewer that could create his financial success. Yet, the qualities that he lacks the most (being able to connect with people) are not taught in classrooms or board meetings.

In a word, uninspiring.

Um, does Romney have controlling interest in the Deseret News. It seems like a preponderance of the articles dealing with the Republican primaries are about him. Aren't there other candidates?

People are suspicious of "Good" people. I would rather vote for a loyal family man anyday, than an adulterer. If you are not loyal to your family, who will you be loyal to?

This story failed to mention other Romney related issues from this week. What about the 8 million dollars Romney has stashed in the Cayman Islands? It's probably perfectly legal, but it is evidently part of an elaborate tax dodge that Mitt just couldn't resist, and it doesn't look good. In addition, Mitt's comment about $137,000 he received last year in speaking fees only being a small amount, showed how out of touch the trust fund Romney is with the general electorate.
It really wasn't a good week for Mitt.

It is interesting people ovelook Gingrichs infidelity who claim to be religious. Gingrich chose not to be faithful to his wife that should be a cloud there.

Since neither Mitt or Gingrich has plans to change anything in Washington, Newt might know his way around in DC better than Mitt.

Seems as the country resists change and if the GOP does not make a decision soon they will eat each other.

Meanwhile the unemployment is now lower then when George Bush left office and Pres Obama popularity continues to grow.

The GOP needs to change and so far they are not offering any changes of substance so fewer people are going to care if they are governed by GOP or Dem and the voter turnout will dwindle.

Chances are things are going to remain the same.

Mitt Romney will take a big loss in the election today. It will happen because of his flip-flop positions, his tricky personal taxes and his chop shop business management past where he destroyed jobs for american citizens. When he loses today, he will try to make people think that it was because he is a mormon. He will fool only himself on that one.

I don't question Romney's religion (I am LDS myself) but do question how he can call himself a Christian with his "I got mine" stances and business ethics. Is it Christian to enrich yourself while laying off workers and cutting the wages and benefits of those who remain? Now, I don't begrudge businesses making profits. But, at what level does it become obscene? Just how rich does Romney need to become?

@GoldieZ
"People are suspicious of "Good" people."

Nope, just Republicans. Democrats had no issue with Barack Obama.

Here's the thing, the people who decided to not vote for Romney due to religion, didn't make that decision this week, they'd known that for a while. So when Mitt was leading in the polls last week in South Carolina, that was despite the "Mormon issue". His fall and likely loss is due to the other factors. There surely is some "Mormon factor" involved but it's a bit hard to quantify, but since Romney led by double digits in polling a week ago, we know that it was possible for him to win South Carolina.

If you're going to let religion into the discussion don't be surprised if it turns around and bites you.

I have to laugh when I hear so many people talk about Romney's "shady" tax loopholes and stashing away his wealth in the Caymans. C'mon people, get real. If he didn't take advantage of all of the LEGAL IRS tax code deductions, you would then say he was a stupid businessman for not managing his money better.

If you knew what he apparently knows about LEGALLY minimizing his tax burden, you would do the exact same thing, but you don't, so tell yourself that you are smarter than Romney and keep paying that higher bracket income tax rate that you love so much. Then vote for Gingrich or Obama because that's what smart people seem to want to do these days.

Perhaps, it would be beneficial for Romney to ask his wealthy friends for assistance. Perhaps reluctance to release one's finances to the public, and stowing a portion of one's fortune in places other than America is the way to go.

Romney's drop in the polls is a result of Pac money. In Iowa, Romney outspent Newt 2:1. In So. Carolina Newt has been able to spend much more. Maybe Newt's condescending, cynical attitude toward the poor (esp. blacks) has helped Newt too. There is an ugly underbelly in the Republican Party, particularly in the South.

"If he didn't take advantage of all of the LEGAL IRS tax code deductions, you would then say he was a stupid businessman for not managing his money better."

I agree that Romney has done nothing wrong.

I have heard this over and over.

Funny how people's view of GE paying virtually no tax is not viewed the same.

Personally, I think Romney and GE should be paying much more tax than they do.

Why is GE vilified by the Right and Romney given a pass?
