I felt bad for Rose. At least I could turn the tv off, he had to stay and watch. Ouch. Some guys need to look at themselves. Besides the 2-25 from three, defensive rebounding was horrible and guard play very poor.
This is going to make winning the WCC difficult.
When the three's weren't going in, why couldn't BYU's guards take it to the rim and create action in the middle with the bigs? Davies and Hartsock didn't get much help tonight.
Ugly.
Ugly game for the Cougars. Sooner or later it happens to every team. Too bad Mr. Dependable Noah Hartsock's career scoring game was wasted but even Noah missed with a chance to take the lead with about 10 minutes left.
Better luck at Pepperdine on Saturday Cougs!
Cougs may need to win the WCC tourney to get in to the big dance now.
At very least, those Gonzaga games, the VTech game and the home game against St Marys just got very important.
A few weeks ago...I was criticized and called a Ute troll for coming on a thread and saying that BYU was mediocre and average at best this year for getting clobbered at St. Mary's. I was told that I didn't know anything about BYU basketball and even though I said BYU didn't pass the eyeball test this year as a legitimate NCAA tournament team..I was still seen as a disloyal BYU fan and a Ute troll. So much for what I know this year I guess.
BYU is a disappointing team this year if your standards (mine are) are NCAA tourney appearances and wins in the NCAA tourney. This appears to be an NIT team this year. Don't seem them winning the WCC tourney or the WCC reg. season this year. They've lost all the games that could have proven they are a good team-Baylor, Ut. State, St. Mary's, etc. This is going to be a rough little stretch. I'm afraid it will be a beat down against Va. Tech, and St. Mary's will not be intimated by BYU in the Mariott Center after what Loyala did to the Cougs today. Very disappointing loss.
I thought the officiating in the WCC would be better than it was in the MWC but obviously not. We didn't get a call the whole night.
Noah Hartsock 11-15, 28 points,
Rest of the team 12-45, 40 points,
pretty much says it all.
Lack of intensity, sloppy play, and horrific shooting isn't going to win many games.
From a Ute fan, we know how this feels times 10. Hang in there coug fans. It's just one game.
Now I know how the Utah fans felt after the Colorado loss.
Why the headline as a stunner? The Y has been playing lots of softies so not ready when someone plays tough
Putrid. I don't think I have ever seen a BYU team shoot from the arc so poorly.
I think they just shot themselves out of the NCAA tourney.
This was an ugly loss. It just shows that for BYU to win they need much better guard play. The guards were simply awful tonight.
Live by the sword, die by the sword. Apparently, Cougar cats don't have nine lives. All it took was one bad sword night to give up the ghost.
Better luck next time. Now, BYU will need LOTS of help for any chance at a 1 or 2 seed in the conference tourney.
I cant remember a time when BYU shot so poorly at home, that was shocking to see. Sometimes that happens though and its just one game, BYU still has 10 to go including 2 against Gonzaga and 1 against St Marys. They need to win at least two of those if not all three.
As an LMU alum-I couldn't be happier...as an objective basketball observer-2 for 24 from the three point line will kill you every time...
LMU is finally healthy and as I have said before is one player (a long 6-10ish rebounder) from being a 20+ win team and in the class of a Gonzaga or St Marys...there's talent there (Ireland in particular is a handful who IMHO should be at a top Big East school - I suspect his height scared a few schools away, to their regret-much as I still dont understand how Jimmer wasn't recruited seriously by any of the big boys in the Northeast)...
Wow 12,751 in attendanace. Way to support your team Cougar fans. Then again, maybe the other 12,000 that were missing knew what they were doing.
For teams that live and die at the 3 point line, it's bound to happen some nights. Would have been nice if the visiting team 50 miles north could have shot 2-25 instead, though.
Looking forward for an article from Dick Harmon about how BYU sure could have used Jimmer last night!!! Someone quoted something about going to the "Dance"??? Sure, yeah, right!!!
Pack it in for the Cougars and gamble on the shooting. That was the strategy and it worked.
I feared this type of game, but I thought it would happen on the road.
Gotta blame the coach though for failing to prepare the Cougars defensively. It took no genius to know that Ireland and Viney were trouble!
Shame on the Cougars!
Now . . . will they have the courage to fight back? They must sweep ALL of the remaining games to demonstrate that they have character. Will Rose be smart enough to develop a scheme to win those games? Will the guys carry out that scheme?
Will the Cougar guards shoot 35% or more when they get open looks?
Dave S:
Get back to us when the HC has 12,000 at a game. With only a few thousand in the stands at the HC, maybe the other 10,000-12,000 that are missing know what they are doing?
I find it hilarious that the same fan base that derides cougar fans for alleged attendance smack during fb season, has now resorted to attendance smack.
Dave S: next time ask to be cc'd on the memo concerning U fans talking points so you don't put your foot in your mouth on the comment boards.
I disagree with the headline. It wasn't the defense. Most of those threes were wide open. They just weren't falling.
