This is a good idea, but let's move it back a bit. Let's build a better career before we think that involves networking and boss facetime.
First, go to work. Every day they expect you. Every day they call you in. For years. No 'I don't feel good' days. For years. No 'the weather is bad'. For years. Then, when you get there, work. You get a coffee or lunch break, if you're lucky. Not half your shift off on, or commuting to, a 'smoke break'. Switch from 'that's not my job', or 'why do I have to handle that' to 'I've got it covered'. Your goal is 'I see what we're trying to do here, and I'll do whatever it takes to help'. Not 'what's in it for me?'. Earn a better career. Don't expect it.
