Rockwell, want to talk the least meaningful supposed football champion who played who only beat a bunch of WAC teams. Trust me, the nation views byu 1984 is a far bigger joke than Utah 1944. Thanks for playing.

"Since when is playing in a post season tournament a requirement for being named national champs?"

Umm, since postseason tournaments were started for the purpose of deciding a national champ instead of "naming" one.

Let's say Ohio State this coming year under their probation is the only undefeated football team at the end of the regular season, and unanimously voted number 1 by the coaches. Would we consider them even co-national champs because they were voted number 1 and won all their regular season games? I would think not.

Stockton, I didn't mention that as a knock on Army, and wouldn't have a problem if they claimed it as a national title. They probably were the best team in the country that year, but there have been plenty of times when the best team does not win the championship, so there's no way of knowing what they would have done. From what I understand, they don't even claim themselves national champions.

Where's Stockton ???

Still...rationalizing... simply put... does not make 1944 a National Championship for Utah...thats the bottom line.

...and as for you pebbles... if 1984 was like one of the years that there was a split in the major polls and two National Champions in football were crowned...you might have a leg to possibly stand on....but the fact that there was undisputable consensus from every quater of the voting forum absolutely knocks that possible leg totally out from under you. And believe me other than people in Utah who know the facts the rest of the nation doesn't even know or remember and more than likely care that the 1944 Men's National championship in Basketball is even a debatable subject. It's not even discussed outside of Utah except possibly a small handful of dillusional non Utahn's that have some type of direct tie to U of U. Everyone else wouldn't even know what you were talking about. All they know is that Army was the 1944 Champions regardless of how that occurred.

Go watch the following videos on YouTube:

"100 Seasons of Utah Utes Basketball - Moment 14" (1916 AAU National Champions)

"100 Seasons of Utah Basketball - Moment 1" (1944 National Champions)

*3 days after Utah won the NCAA Tournament, the Utes were invited to play St. John's (NIT Champion) in Madison Square Garden for the combined National Championship. Utah victorious in that game!

Utah has a basketball National Championship, let's put this debate to rest and move on!
