The final plans before failure and collapse of a business, or 2 business in this case. Last ditch effort to overcome an economic roll back and loss of profits. Invest until you bleed a slow death.
I've been wondering why Shopko hasn't shut their doors yet, they never have any business and never advertise. Another year?
Agreed --- along with Fresh Market stores (formerly Albertsons), I have no idea how Shopko stays open since, on the extremely rare occasions I go in there, it's like a ghost town except with a more depressing atmosphere. Let's face it --- Shopko has had its day and this merger will only prolong an inevitable death.
Funny thing is ShopKo purchased Pamida years ago, then spun it off only for both of them to be acquired by the same capital investment company. Pamida was/is based in Omaha NE, has more stores, but much smaller formats. ShopKo never recovered from the growth of Kohls and Target. Pamida didn't have the bulk to buy and save, thus prices were too high.
If ShopKo would have fully intergrated the two companies purchasing power years ago, ShopKo would still be a publicly traded company, with better purchasing power and thus able to compete better with the Target's and WalMarts of the world.
So, now years later, they are following the strategy they should have followed when they merged back in the 1990's.
I prefer Shopko and shop there before going to WalMart, Target, or Kmart.
