This could have been a good photo-op to discourage distracted driving, eating and driving, talking on cell phones and driving, and drugs and driving, but they limited this opportunity to plug profiteering rather than safety behind the wheel.
My question has always been who was at fault to create this accident? Someone running a red light and forcing and endangering the life of an innocent driver, intoxicated or not, to create the accident and hit them or the driver that had a beer? I favor a law that punishes the first violator of a law creating a hazardous situation than one who is a victim of the first violation.
Driving laws must focus on primary violator, not their victims. Drinking is wrongfully blamed for the majority of accidents when in fact they are really the victims of persecution to coverup causes of accidents.
With all our technology and abusive drivers on the road it is unfair to target one element of the problem. You don't fix a plugged drain by replacing a pipe, you call a plumber to get rid of the clog and all the sludge (other bad drivers) in the clog.
Good for him for forgiving the drunk driver... but I don't agree with him pleading with the judge for the drunk driver to get a lighter sentence.
Personal forgiveness doesn't absolve the perpetrator of his debt to society. That could have been any family he killed, and I think he needs to be sentenced accordingly. If you would like to remove any hatred or feelings of vengeance from your heat, that's great. That's what you should do. But forgiveness shouldn't include the removal of accountability.
My heart goes out to Gary Ceran. It also goes out to the family of a 20 year old who was hit head on by a texting driver. A client of mine was at the scene and tried to save the young man's life, but to no avail. The texting driver suffered only a broken arm. People, there are consequences to your actions!
Best to you and your family Gary. We are friends of the Cerans and have been amazed by their strength as a family even before this horrific accident claimed Cheryl, Ian and Julianna. I've been amazed that life's circumstances haven't claimed Gary, Clarissa or Caleb in other ways. You are all wonderful examples of faith to so many others. Thank you.
