The AP is reporting: "University of Utah starting point guard Josh Watkins has been suspended indefinitely for undisclosed conduct detrimental to the team." It also says that Utah is off to its worst start in history.

After this result of BYU 79, Oregon 65, I already have some predictions for scores on February 2 and March 3 in the mighty Pac12:

Oregon 70+ and Utah 45 or less.

Just like I told AnteleopeValleyUte, the BCS does NOT cover basketball. The BCS is not basketball, it's only football. In basketball, every team has an equal and fair chance to win it all.

And why rip on the WCC anyway? I think it's a terrific conference for BYU to play in.

I didn't trash the PAC-12 in my comment. Other people have but I didn't say anything bad about the PAC-12.

You said, "It sorry when my fellow cougar fans resort to shaded threats like this."

What shaded threat? Go over to the comment board for the U basketball game and read Cougar fans piling on the Ute team. I'm a Cougar fan, but for me to rip on the Ute basketball team is dumb since I know they're undergoing major rebuilding right now.

My point was, Ute fans shouldn't throw too much mud at the Cougar team, since they don't have much to brag about right now.

You said, "And its especially sorry when fellow cougar fans say ignorant things about Utah."

What ignorant comment? Re-read AntelopeValleyUte 8:56 again. I quoted him directly.

To AntelopeValleyUte: How many times must we explain to you Ute fans, that BYU opted not to accept the Big East invitation with its restrictions wherein BYU would lose its home game TV broadcast rights. The Big East wanted BYU badly, and some of their people were miffed and could not understand the reasons for BYU's decision, which is BYU wants to be able to broadcast its home games & rebroadcast all games to their worldwide fans. This would not be possible if BYU joined the Big East. BYU made the Big East a counter-proposal, which was not accepted. BYU omly wanted the same thing Texas has in the Big 12. BYU did not expect the Big East to accept their proposal & planned to remain independent. BYU knew they didn't have the clout that Texas has - also Texas was already in the Big 12, so it was a matter of the Big 12 losing Texas or giving in to their wishes, which they did (except for televising high school games). So BYU decided to remain independent instead of caving in to the wishes of the Big East. That doesn't make BYU prideful or possessed with an ego. BYU is content with what they have until something better comes along, which is not the Big East, which once again will be represented by a #23 ranked (as of last weeks's BCS Standings) West Virginia, one of the 3 co-champions of the Big East. I wonder how long the BCS will allow that to happen. I think not too long. Their purpose it to have the highest ranked teams in the BCS bowls, and this certainly isn't the case with WVU. BYU is wise to be cautious about this decision and I feel they made the correct one.

But if you Ute fans continually rip BYU, saying ignorant things like, "BYU will choke like they always do in the NCAA tournament," many of my fellow Cougar fans won't be so merciful toward your team this season.

    --

It sorry when my fellow cougar fans resort to shaded threats like this. And its especially sorry when fellow cougar fans say ignorant things about Utah. Get over it. No conference will take us. Well except a non BCS conference like the WCC.
I just don't understand why fellow cougar fans say uneducated things, whether they mean it or not about the PAC 12. Would yo talk the same way if Utah joined the Big 12? I would say yes. Because some obsessed cougar fans just can't control themselves.

You are aware this is an article about the BYU basketball team, don't you? The BCS has nothing to do with basketball, only football.

You said at 8:56 - "BYU will choke like they always do in the NCAA tournament."

I'm curious to know what your definition of "choke" is? Losing in the first round? If that's the case you should be aware that two seasons ago, BYU won their first round game in the NCAA Tournament, and last season, they won their first and second round games.

I would advice Ute fans not to rip the Cougar basketball team too much this season. I'm willing to give your Ute basketball team the benefit of the doubt since Larry Krystkowiak is having to literally rebuild this team from scratch just as they begin their first season in the PAC-12.

But if you Ute fans continually rip BYU, saying ignorant things like, "BYU will choke like they always do in the NCAA tournament," many of my fellow Cougar fans won't be so merciful toward your team this season.

Did you really bring up coattail riding? Your a Ute fan right? Utah rode BYU's coattails for 30 years. They now ride the coattails of USC, Oregon, Washington, ASU, Stanford Cal and a bunch of others. Utes are in a very good position and are to be commended but your comment is ridiculous. BYU has a very nice contract with ESPN earned on their own merits and reputation. No coattail riding there.

I'm disappointed that this is the best coverage the DN can give after the BYU basketball team dominates a pretty good team from the PAC 12. The BYU football team beats Hawaii and there are six articles, while the basketball team gets an abridged piece like this. And the basketball game concluded a lot earlier in the day.

Meanwhile, the BYU women beat down a very good basketball team from Syracuse and they get half as much again (just a brief mention in an article that also features Weber State).

I'd wager that if Utah basketball had accomplished either of these achievements, they would have been given much better coverage in this newspaper, even while the boys and girls in red don't deserve it. I'm getting tired of seeing the DN bend over backwards to cover the pathetic utes, while BYU gets the short end when it comes to coverage.

Agree. Austin was a beast. I love this kid. Hopefully he'll make Davies better. It's looking more and more like Austin deserves the start and Davies can come off the bench. The kid plays more aggressively and can shoot from anywhere. He is hungrier than Davies right now.

The team looked really good tonight. However, I don't quite understand why Rogers doesn't get more minutes. He can flat out score!

UCLA beat BYU last year in Anaheim on a neutral court. Also, that UCLA team did not have a senior. So much for Pac 12 dominance. Oregon is hardly a Pac 12 power.

  • NevadaCoug Overton, NV
    Dec. 3, 2011 11:47 p.m.

3 observations about the game today:

    1) Austin was an animal. Drawing charges; battling for boards, and creating opportunities for teammates to get the ball even when he couldn't; just an amazing effort by the young man. Yeah, he fouled out, but at least two of those calls were completely bogus. Like when he "pulled the chair" out from under the Oregon player. Keep it up, Austin, and Davies may be coming off the bench.

    2) Speaking of Davies, just not a good game from him. He needs to stop missing lay ins so much. And the foul trouble problem has got to improve. But, he suffered from the same problem as Austin. His final foul especially was pretty bogus. Guy throws an elbow into Davies' gut and he gets the call? Ridiculous.

    3) Noah Hartsock. He is just a completely different player this season, it seams. I don't remember him ever being so aggressive around the basket. A lot of second chance points for him because he was following shots and not just falling back on defense.

This may just be the deepest BYU squad ever. Maybe not the best, but the deepest.

Winder and Austin are the early surprises. Carlino may have a hard time winning the starting PG position over Winder. Together they will make a dynamite PG combo. And WhatsInItForMe hit the nail on the head. I'd never seen Nate Austin play before this year and reading his bio I thought he was going to be another James Andersen type player, especially the first year back from a mission. He is a force to be reckoned with in the low post and will keep getting better as the year progresses.

Think about how many Freshmen are on the team. Then think about next year we get Tyler Haws back and new recruit Jordan Chatman and Ian Harward. The following year we get Isaac Nielsen and Kyle Collinsworth back from missions. Then there are recruits - TJ Haws and Nick Emery for future years (not sure when they'll serve their missions).

The future is bright. Go Cougs.

Good win for the Y, bets of the year so far. We knew they were not great this year, losing in Logan and watching Wisc beat them badly in the second half last week, but this shows they are capable of beating some decent teams. Oregon had a really nice win in Lincoln before this, I'm sure they are not great, but I didn't think BYU would handle them as well as they did.

Murph, you are very funny! The game is in Provo... BYU will crush their little skulls and make Lillard look silly! The best thing about this years success is that it is coming with a majority of freshman isn't it? So, this is only the beginning of 3-4 very good years at the Y!

Pugman, your post today was a week early..... Oregon is one of the more respectable teams in the whacky-12 this basketball season at 4-2.... The really horrible team from the whacky-12 is the Utes and that game is one week from this afternoon. :) I would say that the victory will be by 25 more than it was today to prove my point. :)

  • Jake2010 bountiful, ut
    Dec. 3, 2011 10:23 p.m.

Actually, maybe I should say it like this. I understand what all the craziness on these boards is coming from... It is coming from a deep dark never ending depression that since Majerus left the Utes have meant nothing on the hardwoods.... In many other sports they are just another of the nobodies. Heck, their cross country running girls best performance this year was 84th. The win 2 BCS bowls under two very respectable coaches and the last non bcs bowl they went to they lost to non BCS Boise State.... This season was a dismal 7-5 with a last game of the season loss to at the time 2-10 which improved to 3-10 Colorado. Ruining their only chance to get into a BCS bowl this year. Well, at least to compete for a shot... But let's face it... Oregon would have UCLA'd your tukuses also. Utes.... Face the facts that BCS is not all that it is cracked up to be.... Now that you are competing with them BEAT them! Just shows that your team only got into BCS bowls while playing pathetic mid majors... Your arguments are groundless! Smell the coffee!

    Wow!

    Nate Austin.

    Just, WOW!

Two games in a row he shows he's more than just a frosh. This kid can play, and he's LONG!

Been awhile since BYU's had a true center like this. A LONG time.

    Maybe never?

This kid can defend AND shoot. Treys, even. Foul shots, even.

    Just WOW!

Two games in a row he's shown shooting touch. And defensive ability, in spite of his slight build.

Lookin' forward to Nate's career at BYU!

4-2 horrible? BCS means N O T H I N G come basketball season. It is only the very corrupted way to determine a champion. Come basketball season all conferences have the same shot to get in the dance, make noise and if a cinderella emerges win it. BCS is ONLY football.... Otherwise.... The very laughable in football bcs BIG EAST is the only of the BCS making noise this year..... Have you noticed the polls? Have you noticed the records.... It is time for most of you to reach down, grow a brain and USE IT!

But as of right now, the only exposure BYU is getting is on ESPN, the PAC-12 championship game was played on FOX last night. Will BYU get to play on FOX??? Not unless it goes undefeated and is invited to a BCS game. At the time, in RECENT years, only four teams made it to a BCS game against the power conferences? Utah, TCU, BSU, and Hawaii. BYU will have to do that to gain respect. Is BYU part of a BCS conference? No; but maybe in the future if BYU gets rid of their pride and massive ego, they will accept and be accepted.
