I served in the Southern Australian Mission with two of President Joseph Fielding Smith's grandsons. He also was known as a very strict doctrinarian and as a result was thought also to be rather severe. When asked how they felt about their grandfather, both said they didn't know a more kind person. While I don't have any other testimony than that, I think it speaks to the same report about the tenderness of President Joseph F. Smith.
