A person with autism has a social and communication issue. Not necessarily an intelligence issue. Why did this study pair the two groups? A link to the actual study would be nice.

I don't think it has anything to do with income, but could also relate to environmental factors - such as the quality of food, the chemical exposures, and other environmental things, besides a mother's age.

It used to be that a mother who bore a child into her 40's would have a higher likelihood of having a down's syndrome baby. Maybe the greater the age, the more changes occur with developmental factors.

Except that 80% of babies born with Down Syndrome are born to women under the age of 35. 20% are born to women over 35. Only since so few women over 35 have babies the incident is higher and you get testing available. You are more likely to be born with Down Syndrome if your mother is under 35 rather than over 35.
