Choke! BYU can only play for half a game. No defense in the 2nd half for 2 games now. Next week Apo catches one in the end zone. BYU 7, opponent 45.

Prediction - A player for BYU's defensive thunder will lay a hit on Wynn that permanently ends his season and career. Just as was done on the field in Texas vs Oklahoma to Mr. Bradford.... I understand the Ute fan hatred for the Cougs.... Nobody in a red and white girlyform can lay the type of hits that BYU has been known to lay for years. Dirty? Perhaps, but that is just football.

    Very well said!! Amen.
    _____

Utah has been very good at causing turnovers and capitalizing on them. If they do that to BYU, we're in trouble. On the other hand, BYU is going to feel good, playing at home away from the 100 degree heat. If they are going to approach their potential offensively, this will be the game.

BYUs defense has been stellar, and it won't let us vs. Utah. BYU will stop Utah's running game, then it's on Wynn to get it done. With a sore shoulder and not 100%, I can't see him doing that. He can't run, so that's a huge BYU advantage. BYU is finally at home, and already showed they can play with the mighty Texas and an SEC team, all on the road. Utah will be a breath of fresh air, especially at home. This BYU team will be much improved away from the heat and on their own field with their own fans cheering. I can't possibly see BYU losing this game. They have more depth than ever.

You do know that Chow coached at the Y for years and there is this guy named Lance Renolds still on the coaching staff that knows Chow and what he does probably better than anyone in the nation. I am sure some supprises will happen on both sides but don't let yourself think that BYU is not going to be very prepared for The U's O

staypuffinpc, the play in that picture would never be viewed as a possible pass interference in college football. The reason being that Burton was playing on the ball, not the receiver. It's impossible to play defense without any contact, so defenders are allowed to place their hands on the guy they're covering, sometimes even have a slight hold on the jersey, just not tug him anywhere. He clearly was not arm-barring, displacing his hands or pushing or pulling the receiver out of his intended path to the ball, so it's clearly a clean, textbook pass defense by a now NFL player.

Your piece makes all sorts of assumptions and what ifs. For example, maybe the BYU defense will be able to handle the Utes style of pounding the ball because Texas ran something similar. Strange logic.

My response to your various speculations, the Utes have a new offense and mostly a new crew on D. Roscoe and his boys aren't going to know what to expect tomorrow and are in for some surprises.

My guess is the Utes win but let's not jinx it. The only thing I know for sure is your analysis seems more like something a desperate BYU fan would write.

This article was a joke I found it under the Utah section, but any Utah article that talks about Utah's front seven but fails to mention Star is severely uninformed.

There may be some question marks about Wynn's shoulder, but the fact is that he's still better any QB byu has seen this year and his QB rating is much better than Heaps so far.

byu fan's ultimate fantasy of being able to play Utah with a QB who has a shoulder that needs surgery again isn't happening. Good luck byu dbs keeping up with 3 receivers who are talented and run 4.4 or faster, you are going to need it, and Wynn's shoulder may not be 100% but it's more than capable.

Yeah, I don't see BYU's careful offense having too much success against the Utah D. I know USC isn't ranked this year, but still, they were playing an offense that featured a heisman candidate at quarterback, in the coliseum, and a multi-dimensional offense. I'm sorry, but BYU has none of those things. Utah's offense is garbage too. This game will be close and low-scoring. 13-10 Utah.

Chris B obviously doesn't have a life. I am truly glad that Utah was invited to the Pac 10. At least Chris received a bit of joy. Shame that it will end in utter disappointment. Utah will have to work to win 4 more games.

This year the home field will make a difference. Heaps will relax and get his game together. BYU's D will shut down Wynn and company.

    Final score BYU 42
    Utah 10

Were you writing this article wearing your "band of brothers" t-shirt? This article sounded like a cougar club member wrote it. I have yet to see Saint Jake win a big game yet (the bowl game last year does not count, they were by far the worst team to make a bowl). I didn't read anything about Utah's over all team speed. Direct comparisons were made about what USC was able to do to what BYU will do. BYU is no USC. I don't care who you pick to win, just try and be a little objective. You come off sounding like a cheerleader.

  • CoachWinWA POULSBO, WA

Everybody downplays this game because there are no conference title implications, and because its early in the season. I see it differently. I think this is one of the biggest games in the history of the rivalry.

    Here is why....
Both teams have a lot to prove. Utah needs a solid season to maintain relevance and not become an Oregon State or Washington State in the PAC. Their first few seasons will determine their ability to maintain their BCS success momentum and determine if they are a perennial conference title contender, or a Washington State.

BYU has to win its big games. ESPN appearances depend on it. Consideration into a superconference system REQUIRES BYU to win 9-10 games per year.

The winner is 2-1, the loser is 1-2. The loser is going to be digging out of a hole and will not have the momentum to do it with some tough games coming up for both teams.

While it is still only one game, this is the kind of game that will become the foundation of this years success, and impact recruiting and momentum for future years.

Not a surprising prediction by a BYU fan, reporter, promoter and water carrier. One point he didn't mention is that so far in his career, Heaps has yet to beat a team with a winning record. Should BYU win tomorrow, that record will still be intact. Gives you a warm and fuzzy feeling all over, right!

    Tom

There is no way in Provo that your "team" will score 31 points against Utah's D. They will lucky to score twice against Utah's redzone D. Heaps will get those eyes as big as saucers when he sees his pass get intercepted by Blechen.

The real question is, how many INTs will Heaps have by the end of the game? He has 3 compared to 2 td passes thus far. I don't see that number improving much against the best defense the cougs have seen so far.

    Utah 21

    Go Utes!

  • idablu Idaho Falls, ID
    Sept. 16, 2011 4:35 p.m.

Kariya has not had very many carries in the first 2 games. Diluigi can make some big plays but he is not an up-the-middle RB. He totally cowered against the Texas big defensive front. He is much more effective as a receiver out of the backfield. Kariya, on the other hand, is a much stronger RB and won't go down with a little pat like Diluigi. Quezada has yet to show up this year.

I think BYU's running game is the weakest part of the team this year. Our O-line is not nearly as good in the running game as hyped, and our RB's are sub-par. The injuries to our FB's and their absence is really showing in the running game. Watching one of our RB's (esp Diluigi) trying to block a 260# LB was just sad. We need some serious bulldozers playing FB.

To win this game, BYU is going to have to air it out, because their running game is non-existant.

No way will this game be a blow-out either way. It will be a low scoring squeaker decided in the last few plays.

  • williary Kearns, UT
    Sept. 16, 2011 4:34 p.m.

As mighty Southern Illinois proved last week, BYU will be the worst offense Utah has played to this point. The worst QB Utah will have played. He may have a picturesque throwing motion, but he makes bad decisions and is very inaccurate down the field. He'll throw the Utah DB's, and probably Blechen, a few easy picks to cost his team this game.

And the legend will continue to grow.

    Re: staypuffinpc

I'm going to assume you mean a P.I. It really depends on when the photo was snapped. If that is before the ball has touched anyone, then yeah it looks questionable, if it is a second later and Burton has swatted the ball, then it doesn't really matter what he does to the receiver.

You are right though. It will come down to a few plays and a little luck. It being so competitive is really what has made this rivalry awesome over the last 20 and especially 10 years. It also has something to do with the ever popular "is it too heated?" argument, but I think the large majority of fans keep it civil and only gently rib their neighbors and freinds about it appropriately.
Go Utes, leave no doubt who the better team is.

12 of the last 14 matchups were within 7 points or less. I really don't know how anyone on either side can predict a blowout win...especially when both offenses are quite inept. My prediction is 20-17 BYU and that's just because they're at home (I'd reverse it if Utah was at home). Of course as a Ute I would rather Utah win, but predictions are best when based on sound reasoning and not just wishcasting.

    Re: Nostradamus

You might be right, but how do you know Texas is a "pretty poor" team? They are ranked in the top-20 (depending on what poll you look at) and BYU may have really helped them out in determing who their future is with freshmen Case McCoy and Jaxon Shipley.

My point is, it's still too early in the season to claim Texas is a poor team since they're 2-0 and in the top-25, just like it's too soon to say they're a good team.

  • Nostradamus Cottonwood Heights, UT
    Sept. 16, 2011 3:38 p.m.

It's pretty weird having this game so early in the season...so far neither team has looked great. Utah played a talented, but physicially inferior Montana State team and it was a good win. BYU played a decent Ole Miss team and also won...week 1, BYU looked better. Last week BYU played a pretty poor Texas team - but, still Texas...however, they didn't show up in the 2nd half. Utah played a big and fast USC team - lost, but did so showing tremendous grit and determination. Utah looked better week 2.

None of that matters now - I am a huge Ute fan, but even so the edge goes to BYU as it is in LES and well, we won last year. Not a prediction (this game is too hard to predict) - but BYU has home field and a healthy QB...well, assuming he shows up.

I know the Utes could win, they have the heart, the atheletes and the coach; and I REALLY hope they do!

    Go Utes!

The biggest match-up will be between Doman and Chow. Definite advantage Chow. Both teams have the skill players but who will use them to their best advantage? I can see Diluigi tippy toeing in the backfield and heaps lazering in on a single receiver. If Heaps will spread it around and if Doman will go down field and mix up the backs, BYU will be fine. A big if.

The DesNews has published that photo several times since last year. And why not? It was a key play in the game. Funny thing is, where do you think Burton's other hand is? Perhaps it's just the angle, but that sure looks like PA to me.

Simple truth is, this game almost always comes down to whomever gets the calls and the lucky bounces and incredibly lucky plays: 4th and 18, Harline, George's defenders running into each other, Hall's flurry of interceptions, Burton coming off the edge and blocking the kick, just to name the past 5 years.

The past 5 years, the game has come down to the last two minutes. Gives me an ulcer every time. And I love it, so bring it on!

he always manages to comment first and no matter what, no one can leave him alone. Wherever he is, he has to be laughing at all the people who take his childishness seriously enough to respond.

Anyway, these teams are evenly matched (get real TJ, we have not proved to be better on both sdies of the ball; far from it. case in point, look what the might salookis of Southern Illinois did to Ole Miss after our game.......doesn't inspire much confidence).

amusing as always Chris. Keep thinking your team has arrived pal. They're going to get jack stomped by a bunch of 'un-athletic non-AQ choir boys' on Saturday. You're opinion of your team reminds me of the 'uncool' kid at school who goes out and buys the cool new threads and thinks that they will instantly gain him popularity and make him cool. You think the simple act of getting into the Pac 12 somehow magically makes Utah a better, more athletic team. Nobody remind Chris that UCLA, WSU, and Colorado also play in the Pac 12 and yet somehow the magical Pac 10(12) Fairy hasn't magically made their programs good. Thanks for playing.

    Crispy,

You are funny. BYU has no athletes on their team. As I remember Heaps was wanted by most teams in the country including Utah, several linebackers were wanted by or played for BCS schools. Apo was committed to Texas and then changed his mind to BYU. I'm guessing that you don't think that Hinds is very good anymore either. Just to let you in on a secret both schools usually recruit the same kids so if BYU is not very athletic then the same could be said for Utah. What it comes down to is that BYU and Utah are very evenly matched and this game will most likely be a very close game like last year. Lets hope for a great game with no injuries.

Special teams play will be very important to this game. Who has the better punter, who will get, maintain better field position? Turnovers, the kicking game will be more important than the quaterbacks in deciding the game Saturday, and Utah always seems to do better with these things. Trick plays, deception, creativity are usually almost always in the Utes favor. Watch out Cougars. It will be a frustrating day if you don't take care of these things.
