Ugliest win ever, but hey a W is a W.
You are way too generous with your grades.
Special Teams -- 'D' at best. Shanked punts, short field goal missed, big return by Ole Miss.
Coaching -- 'C'. BYU offense totally disoriented and out of sync. Lousy tempo. Doman laid an egg.
I give them an "L" ...
for Lucky!
1st... Any win is better then a loss. The Y's defense looked greatly improved over last year. Bronco can coach Defense. Let's not lose sight that Ole Miss (4-8) last year is predicted by the SEC to finish with 5 wins and finish 10th this year. When you add that their starting QB was suspended for this game, and they lost 2 of there 3 top running backs to injury's (all 3 in 3rd quarter). Everyone needs to temper all the hype. I live in S Carolina and the hype out here was if Miss didn't win this game they might only win 3 this year..
Updated my profile, just noticed it still said Sandy.
Any win against a SEC team is a great win! For a first game, it was a good test. It allows the offense to improve and get some confidence. Doman's play calling and processes need to improve.
Defenses for both teams were outstanding. They scored more points than the offenses (14 - 13).
The SEC's last team is as good as the best team in the WAC, MWC, or a middle level PAC team. Now the Cougs need to get ready for an outstanding Texas team.
Great game by the defense. Can't say the same for the offense....
Great effort by the defense today, glad to see them keep us in the game. Kyle Van Noy was an animal! Strip the ball, get back up, score a defensive touchdown!
Offense has potential but needs to improve vastly. Jake can do much better than that, no doubt about it.
Special teams better be working hard this week to correct issues.
A win is a win and I'll take it but it truely was ugly. Heaps and Doman need to get their act together, Heaps looked terrible the first half, throwing behind, overthrowing, tempo was slow, alot of things to work on. Apo needs to be used alot more. I honesly thought Heaps and the offense were farther along than they are. For this team to win 9 or 10 games the D is going to have to play like they did today in every game. Heaps and the offense should get better but how fast and how much is a big question and concern.
The offense will figure it out. But wow. The defense was awesome against the run. If Ole Miss at home cant run on BYU, nobody will run on BYU this year. Pass defense was a different story. The article says they pressured the QB, but I didnt see it that way. Ole Miss had decent success passing the football. Too much time to throw, and too many open receivers. The sack with the fumble and touchdown was definitely great, but not enough pressure. I don't think BYU faces enough really good QBs this year to worry, and the young secondary will get more experience with every game.
Good win!

I think BSU, TCU, UofU, BYU has proven over the past 5 years that that statement is not true. The bottom couple of teams in the SEC are not that good.
The only other exception i'll take is the Texas is outstanding comment. 2 years ago yes, But they lost so much talent from graduation 2 years ago. They will not be as BAD as last year, but they are FAR from Outstanding or even Great. They are good.
If Chris B is a man of his word, we won't be hearing from him,(I doubt he can reframe). Both Chris B and mg63 should admit that Ole Miss's superior athletes really weren't superior at all. BYU has some great athletes, much better than some think.
I hope the offense can quickly get it together, we'll need it. Signs of good potential but alot of mistakes. Apo needs to get the ball alot more.
Ugly win but happy we got the win. Go cougs.
Whew! BYU wins and Utah wins, but Utah State with a loss looks to be the best team in the state. Congratualtions to the Aggies in a hard fought game. For the independent Cougars it is one game in the win column. Hopefully they will improve for next weeks game with Texas. I was having trouble enjoying this game until the clock was at :00. Maybe when I watch the replay tonight on BYU-TV I will enjoy it more knowing we won.
I did love the defense and especially the play of the front seven. They had the Ole Miss offense stalled all night long. They also hit extremely hard. Teams will be tip-toeing into those holes fearing for their lives.
BYU 1-0
Utah 1-0
USU 0-1
Best Start Week 1 --- USU!
BYU has all the guns and they are all loaded, they just need to learn how to squeeze the trigger better.
It's unfortunate that arguably BYU's 2 best linebackers (Pendleton and Van Noy) are competing for the same position.
They were both exceptional today.
Jake Heaps needs to work on looking the db's off the ball, too many telegraphs in this game. BYU needs to blitz more, good things happened every time they put on a rush, and yet most of the plays you see only 3 rushing and unable to put any pressure on. Why drop so many back in coverage when their not covering anyone anyway.
Heaps just isnt as good as most think. At some point he will have to earn his stardom that has been given. I hope Heaps becomes the classic great BYU qb everyone thinks he is. But as of now Heaps is below average.
And you Y fans had the nerve to pick Utah apart for their game...You're play was no better. LOL!

I would agree that USU played the best overall game of the local teams, but I think that BYU will end up with the best record. The best game will be between USU and BYU.
The Aggies (players) looked great today, I don't think their coaches will match the players' efforts. If it wasn't for USU's coaches choking, in the last 4 mins., they would have won.
This weekend, the UoU didn't prove anything. It was a nice little practice game. Next week, lets hope that they are ready to play a real game against USC.
Doman was definitely not impressive in his debut as OC. I thought he would be more aggressive and gutsy. Not so. Almost like watching Anae again.
