Having read some of the Texas A&M commentary and their desire to move out of the long shadow cast by Texas, I am now better able to understand the obsession of the Ute trolls with BYU football/basketball. It's not that Utah lacks a great football team, or great students, or great administrators---it has all of the above. And no one can fault the U for opting to graze in the greener pastures of the Pac 10.2 when the invitation came. A smart move on all accounts.

But Texas A&M's reasons for leaving the Big 12? They give up 90% of their last 2 years of league membership (estimated at $28M) to move to a league where they won't break even for years and will have trouble ever getting to a BCS bowl...their reasons appear more connected to leaving behind the long shadow of Texas and the Longhorn Network than the upside of joining the SEC. Utah's reasons for packing up were objectively reasonable, but in the comments of Hedgehog, Chris B and other Ute trolls, the BYU-envy is revealed. Thankfully for these trolls, ESPN and BYUtv will be there every step...

Ah the preseason... For all the haters out there, Ole Miss is currently ranked 10 out of the 12 SEC teams on ESPNs power rankings. Since 8 teams from the SEC are ranked in preseason polls, that is far from a cellar dweller.

But lets remember that we still haven't played ANY games yet. Ole Miss was supposed to be good last year but never showed up. They are supposed to be better this year, so we will have to wait and see. BYU finished last year very well, but it was against weak competition. They should be better this year, but who knows by how much? We will have to wait and see.

It is a statement game because right now there is so much unknown about the team. If Heaps and Doman are hot, our Oline is strong and our defense really is improved from a good unit I wouldn't be surprised with a blowout victory. If all the improvement last year was the competition and Doman can't call plays well and Heaps can't get up for big games then I wouldn't be surprised with a blowout loss, especially in the heat and humidity.

Hmm, Don't recall anyone calling the UTEP game a statement game.

Chris B: Just like a typical BYU troll that would rather watch BYU lose than watch Utah win. I'm glad that I didn't sit there watching the U manhandle Alabama, wishing the whole time that the U would fall apart and somehow Alkabama would come back and win that game. Get a life, man!

@ Naval Vet

Desperate, emotional, frantic, insecure....whoa dude! Thought name calling was forbidden by the moderators. Guess not.

You could not be more wrong. You as a BYU-hater know exactly who you are and what you stand for. You together with Chrissie B and Hedgie have always ragged on BYU. And someone calls you out and you start name-calling.

Nice try. Afraid that your insecurity as a troll is showing.

Chris B: I am willing to bet that you won't even show your face on a BYU blog after next Saturday. I can't see you coming on and saying, "hey, guys, I was wrong, sorry".

ESPNs Andrea Adelson recognized the irrelevancy of the Y when she said, A win in Oxford, Miss., on Saturday would go a long way toward showing the college football nation what BYU is all aboutand wins against [Mississippi, Texas, and Utah] would most certainly land the Cougars back into the national spotlight."

Thats right. The Y has to landback into the national conscience, as at present, they are not there now.
===

The article shows BYU is in the National conscience now, and you are wrong to allude otherwise.

She said the "National Spotlight".

Yep every step. So why do BYU fans keep talking about the TV money? I thought the move to independence was not about that.

Wow! I'll see the cougs on ESPN this saturday, but I can't find the utes anywhere in Texas for thursday game. Hmm! Pac-12, Independence? Utah back to the mountain west? Guess the utes will rake in pac-12 money this year.

Montana State will not beat Utah, probably not score on them unless it is a pick-six. The D-line twos are too good.

BYU will beat Ole Miss.

Haha!! So true! I am a closet Ute fan all but one game of the year, but it isn't worth the effort to try to pull up the games on justinTV. For you Utah fans outside of the Salt Lake area (how ever many that may be:) I am truly sorry. But I am so excited to watch 10 games on ESPN/BYUtv and attend TWO games in person...I can hardly wait!

And to NightOwl-I didn't see the reference to money there... But I will go one further and say that in all likelihood Utah WILL have the upper hand in TV money after their acclimatization period in the PAC. But even then I won't be able to watch their games on my tv.

This is like a 'coming out' game for the Cougars --after so many years playing in the shadows of Utah and TCU in the MWC.
BYU wants to establish itself as a worthy/good mid-major team --a level that Lavell took them there during his era.

Good luck, Cougars!
And good luck with the 'Quest to be alone'.

The worst team in the SEC West (Ole Miss) would probably be picked to win the Big East. They would be in the upper half of the PAC12... Don't dis them because they play in the toughest conference in all of college football.

-----------------

No idea how good Ol'Miss will be this year but your last year analysis is wrong.

That Ol' Miss lost at home to Division 2 Jacksonville State and with 4 total wins was 1-1 vs Division 2 schools.

Furthermore, according to USA Today Jeff Sagarin 2010 rankings:

A) WSU SOS #2 vs Ol' Miss SOS #32

B) WSU played in the #1 conference vs Ol' Miss in #2

C) WSU ranked #79 vs Ol' Miss #84

So saying 2011 Ol' Miss picked to finish last in the SEC is a mid-tier PAC-12 team is just wrong. But I do agree that they could probably win the Big Least title.

Serenity,

I'm pretty sure Utah fans, coaches, players etc. are not awe struck by BYU's "shadow". Utah's football program has received more national attention than the Y over the past 10 years. Translation... there is no shadow, it's part of your delusion.

For every Utah troll there is also a sammyg or duckhunter, so don't pretend your fan base is above the trolling and obsession.

A win over Ole Miss would be a nice win but hardly a statement. Ole Miss is a regular doormat in the SEC and lost its opener at home last year to Jacksonville State.

Nick Emery and T.J. Haws just committed to BYU!!!

BYU hasn't played their first game as an Independent and they're already being pursued by the Big 12.

Weekly national broadcasts of BYU football.

Life is sweet if you're a Cougar fan!
