"This board is the war of mediocrity." -- Clowntown1 Someone please pass me a Kleenex... again.
The reason for the statement game reference is because the game is televised
across the nation on espn. The entire nation has the game available to them if
they choose to watch it. BYU knows that viewers from across the nation will be
tuning in to watch so they want to put on a good showing against an SEC
opponent. Utah on the other hand is regulated to Kjazz and Versus, even their
game against a top 25 opponent (USC) will be televised on versus. Have fun and
enjoy the great pleasures of viewing games on kjazz and versus ute trolls LOL.
Dont worry though Christy B and Wedge, you do get one game on ESPN2 thanks to
BYU of course.
Who else could the Big10 get at this point? what candidates are out there that
would go? I agree that BYU is the best option. Pac10 had Texas and it's friends
in mind, and they would all only go if texas went. Of course they would want
those huge schools over Utah.... But yes Utah was the next best option, I don't
feel bad about that. Utah is a smaller school from a small conference, we are
very glad to have moved up. Best of luck to Utah and BYU, both great teams.

A win over Ole Miss would be a nice win but hardly a statement. Ole Miss is a
regular doormat in the SEC and lost its opener at home last year to Jacksonville
Serenity,I'm pretty sure Utah fans, coaches, players etc. are not
awe struck by BYU's "shadow". Utah's football program has received
more national attention than the Y over the past 10 years. Translation... there

good Ol'Miss will be this year but your last year analysis is wrong. That Ol' Miss lost at home to Division 2 Jacksonville State and with 4 total

agree that they could probably win the Big Least title.

Andrea Adelson recognized the irrelevancy of the Y when she said, A win in
Oxford, Miss., on Saturday would go a long way toward showing the college
football nation what BYU is all aboutand wins against [Mississippi, Texas, and
Utah] would most certainly land the Cougars back into the national
spotlight."Thats right. The Y has to landback into the national

article shows BYU is in the National conscience now, and you are wrong to allude
otherwise.She said the "National Spotlight".
Chris B: I am willing to bet that you won't even show your face on a BYU blog

@ Naval VetDesperate, emotional, frantic, insecure....whoa dude!
Thought name calling was forbidden by the moderators. Guess not.You could not be more wrong. You as a BYU-hater know exactly who you are and
what you stand for. You together with Chrissie B and Hedgie have always ragged
on BYU. And someone calls you out and you start name-calling. Nice try. Afraid that your insecurity as a troll is showing.
Chris B: Just like a typical BYU troll that would rather watch BYU lose than
watch Utah win. I'm glad that I didn't sit there watching the U manhandle
Alabama, wishing the whole time that the U would fall apart and somehow Alkabama
would come back and win that game. Get a life, man!
Hmm, Don't recall anyone calling the UTEP game a statement game.
Ah the preseason... For all the haters out there, Ole Miss is currently ranked
10 out of the 12 SEC teams on ESPNs power rankings. Since 8 teams from the SEC
are ranked in preseason polls, that is far from a cellar dweller. But
lets remember that we still haven't played ANY games yet. Ole Miss was supposed
to be good last year but never showed up. They are supposed to be better this
year, so we will have to wait and see. BYU finished last year very well, but it
was against weak competition. They should be better this year, but who knows by
how much? We will have to wait and see. It is a statement game
because right now there is so much unknown about the team. If Heaps and Doman
are hot, our Oline is strong and our defense really is improved from a good unit
I wouldn't be surprised with a blowout victory. If all the improvement last
year was the competition and Doman can't call plays well and Heaps can't get up
for big games then I wouldn't be surprised with a blowout loss, especially in
the heat and humidity.Go Cougs!
Having read some of the Texas A&M commentary and their desire to move out of
the long shadow cast by Texas, I am now better able to understand the obsession
of the Ute trolls with BYU football/basketball. It's not that Utah lacks a
great football team, or great students, or great administrators---it has all of
the above. And no one can fault the U for opting to graze in the greener
pastures of the Pac 10.2 when the invitation came. A smart move on all
accounts. But Texas A&M's reasons for leaving the Big 12? They

Chris B you predict 90% of the time BYU will lose and 90% of the time you are

My question is, does Chris B have the courage to come on here after a BYU win
and admit he was wrong. My gut says no. I recall someone promising last year if
BYU beat SDSU @ SDSU (bball) that he would retire from posting. Clearly not a

"I can't wait" statement. Especially since the predictions are so

I really don't see BYU accepting an invitation to the big 10/12 even if one
comes. It is too soon to abandon the independent move. Belonging to a BCS conf.
makes things easier but not necessarily better. I hope we stay independent and
make it work.
Chris B in no way represents the University of Utah's fan base... Cougar fans
just ignore his comments. BYU is going to be a very good team this year
and I don't see them losing very many games at all, actually I hope that the
only game that they lose this year is against Utah. Everyone always talks about
how when you beat a team the win is diminished if that team doesn't end up with
a good record....So why on earth would you want to beat BYU and then watch
that win slowly fade in relevance if they were to lose more games. Most
Utah fans would agree with this. The others are too busy hiding in their mothers
basements to understand this concept.I wish the best for BYU in their game
against Ole Miss and I wish the Utes the best in their game against Montana
State. Every single game is a must win game now days so every game is the
most important one that you will play!Go UTES!!!
As a BYU fan deep in Texas country, I'm looking forward to the BYU-UT game. If
the game were played in Lavell Edwards Stadium this year, I'd make the call
right now that BYU wins. However, the Longhorns have an electric atmosphere and
that will undoubtedly help their team. However, Ole Miss is an easy call- BYU.
As for the question as to whether or not BYU should consider joining
in the same conference as the Longhorns, that's an obvious no brainer: no way.
The Longhorns are running the Big 10 and only need another team to keep their
number at 10. A&M is trying to leave because of the inequality in the
conference and I believe it won't be long before OU and OSU head down the road
as well. BYU certainly qualifies as a legitimate team for the conference on
their own merits and everything they bring to the table, but I firmly belive
that independence will be in the best interests of their entire program..... for
the time being.
ChrisYou always talk about "Athletes."Please
define "athletes" for us.Please regal us with why a 315 lb
BYU player is not an "athlete" and a 315 lb So miss players is? Why
their receivers are "Athletes" and our are not. Why their quarterback
is and ours is not?Man up. What are you really saying?
ESPN power rankings have ole miss ranked 8 out of 12. Maybe not a huge
statement, but nothing wrong with calling this a respectable win. Good luck to
the cougs- this Ute fan would prefer to see them do well with their independent
status. Keeps things fun. Also, does anyone else feel like the D-News
randomly censors harmless comments?
@The RockI'm with you- Independence is probably the safest road for
now- and I don't think BYU want the WCC to be left at the altar after just 1
season- especially since they've done us a huge favor for 2011 non FB sports.
If it's possible, it would be cool if the big 12 gave BYU a
transitional period- where they had 3 FB and 6 BB game a year against Big 12
teams over the next 3-5 years. This would show that the Big XX is actually
stable, and genuinely interested in BYU. BYU would not draw on the conference
revenue over that period, and could also help the Big XX establish its brand by
helping institutions set up their own broadcasting networks. Just a thought.
"rely on cheat sheets and cliff notes." Sorry.
Chris B Curious you don't mention my FOOTBALL predictions from last

accurate as that statement is, I hope that is selective memory and not a mild

Montana 99utah 0I got the inspiration from Chris B.
It isn't that hard to figure out what "statement" means, at least for
those older than 12, with IQs above 100, and with decent educations:Losing big says one thingBarely losing says anotherWinning
says one thingWinning big says anotherWe will see what
statement is made.Sound waves cannot travel in a vacuum, because
sound requires a medium and the Mtn. was like playing in a vacuum. Now that BYU
football has a sufficient "medium" (ESPN) to "conduct"
(broadcast) its games, the "statement," whatever it is, will be
heard. Now even those who rely and cheat sheets and cliff notes can
understand what a "statement" game is.
BlueCoug;Too funny, but you waste your breath. crisb does not care about
Utah. She lives to disrespect BYU and the LDS standards. The good thing is that
BYU almost always wins games where she predicts losses. Thank you
crisb. I am feeling better about the Old Miss and Texas games.
I just looked at the standings and I see that Ole Miss is tied for first in the
SEC. This should be a tough game.
One thing for sure, BYU will never be out of Utah fans minds. Their obsession
with all things BYU, even with their own Community college up north in the
PAC-10 is really hilarious. Almost everyone of BYU'S games are on ESPN. More
than any other program in the country! That is about as relevant as a program
can get.How many Utah games on ESPN so far?....ONE! What a
coincidence, it's against BYU. Now you want to talk irrelevant?

@Naval Vet The worst team in the SEC West (Ole Miss) would probably be
picked to win the Big East. They would be in the upper half of the PAC12. The
lost to 5 teams last year who finished in the Top 15. Don't dis them because
they play in the toughest conference in all of college football.Ole
Miss is probably not a Top 25 team, but they are in that next tier. They are
not Washington St, Iowa St, Rutgers or Louisville.BYU plays Ole
Miss, U play Montana State in Week 1. Go back and read Whit's and Wynn's
comments about Montana State. Their comments were almost identical to Heaps'
comments about Ole Miss. Their comments almost made me think they got mixed up
and were talking about Week 2 against USC they were predicting such a hard
fought battle.@Chris BYour assessment of Ole Miss is right on.
I look forward to reading your post on Saturday night after a Cougar win. You
predicted wrong on every BYU basketball game, and you are wrong again on this
one. Unless you meant BYU 30, Ole Miss 17?
Its a sad statement made when your statement game is against the last place team
in a BCS conference. Either that is silly hype or the program is lower than we
thought. However, when a team is an independant with a weak schedule (average
ranking of opponent at 78th) then you must make the most out of it. It is a
tired horse to beat but all I hear is the ESPN TV deal. Of course it is much
better than the mountain contract which was the worst in college football. But
BYU's deal is a Wac deal. They have exactly the same # of games and positioning
(ESPN2, weekday games and ESPNU) as other Wac teams. However, the Wac TV deal
is huge compared to the Mtn. so BYU is better off. Also remember the road games
would have been on the SEC, Pac12 and Big 12 networks anyway so that's no
change. Independance is great until you lose your first game. It is like being
on NCAA probation and only haveing the AP poll to focus on. Its going to be a
long season with a terrible schedule it maybe ole Miss is their statement game
Here come all of the naysayers, all of the haters. Any informed, intelligent
football fan knows that BYU will be very good this year. Their defense is going
to be very good and if Heaps can continue to improve at the rate he showed last
year, the offense will be good as well.Looking at it objectively,
their first four games look like this:@ Ole Miss -- They should roll
the Rebels. Ole Miss will be lucky to score. The only thing Mississippi has
going for it is their offensive line and that it's a home game. Other than
that...BYU out matches them and should outplay them in every way.@
Texas -- Tough game in a tough environment. Texas is always loaded with talent,
although this year they have questions at QB. Should be a close game and could
go either way.Utah -- Face it, the Utes are in trouble. Their
overrated QB will probably be hurt by this game, they have no RBs and their
O-line has fallen apart. Their Defense is good, but not good enough...BYU wins
this by 10+UCF -- A good game against a good team. BYU should win
this one at home.
And BYU would limit their brand if they joined the Big12 so quickly. There's no
way the Big12 will bow to BYU's demands and BYU will only stand to strengthen
their position with a few years, at least, of success. Then conferences will be
begging to have them join. As far as I see it, BYU has 8 years (ESPN contract
length) to make it work. Give it time and if it's still not working then make a
change. Either way you're not out anything.
Seems like every game from here on out is a statement game for BYU, just like
every game for Utah will be too. Any loss by either team will be viewed as a
problem for either school.
I would find it slightly dishonest to leave the WCC this soon after the
"marriage". I hope BYU is not that fickle. I am of the
opinion that independence is the best route for BYU at present. If they can
make it work it will be a major boost to the program. There is nothing like
controlling your own destiny. As for Chris B: Please, get a life.
Montana 31utes 17Even a Division II schools can generate

ESPNs Andrea Adelson recognized the irrelevancy of the Y when she said, A win in
Oxford, Miss., on Saturday would go a long way toward showing the college
football nation what BYU is all aboutand wins against [Mississippi, Texas, and
Utah] would most certainly land the Cougars back into the national
spotlight."Thats right. The Y has to landback into the
national conscience, as at present, they are not there now.QB Jake
Heaps echoed Ms. Adelsons thoughts when he said, Its a huge statement game for
us. This game means a lot to us...But its going to be a hard fought battle. If
playing the worst team in the SEC West is huge, and expected to be a hard fought
battle, its obvious they dont feel up to task when facing AQ teams not at the
bottom of their league. And the cougars' pathetic sub-.500 record in facing AQ
schools further supports that.
Yes, I read the article but enough already. Football season, please get here
