ESPN power rankings have ole miss ranked 8 out of 12. Maybe not a huge statement, but nothing wrong with calling this a respectable win. Good luck to the cougs- this Ute fan would prefer to see them do well with their independent status. Keeps things fun.

Also, does anyone else feel like the D-News randomly censors harmless comments?

You always talk about "Athletes."

Please define "athletes" for us.

Please regal us with why a 315 lb BYU player is not an "athlete" and a 315 lb So miss players is? Why their receivers are "Athletes" and our are not. Why their quarterback is and ours is not?

Man up. What are you really saying?

As a BYU fan deep in Texas country, I'm looking forward to the BYU-UT game. If the game were played in Lavell Edwards Stadium this year, I'd make the call right now that BYU wins. However, the Longhorns have an electric atmosphere and that will undoubtedly help their team. However, Ole Miss is an easy call- BYU.

As for the question as to whether or not BYU should consider joining in the same conference as the Longhorns, that's an obvious no brainer: no way. The Longhorns are running the Big 10 and only need another team to keep their number at 10. A&M is trying to leave because of the inequality in the conference and I believe it won't be long before OU and OSU head down the road as well. BYU certainly qualifies as a legitimate team for the conference on their own merits and everything they bring to the table, but I firmly belive that independence will be in the best interests of their entire program..... for the time being.

Chris B in no way represents the University of Utah's fan base... Cougar fans just ignore his comments.
BYU is going to be a very good team this year and I don't see them losing very many games at all, actually I hope that the only game that they lose this year is against Utah. Everyone always talks about how when you beat a team the win is diminished if that team doesn't end up with a good record....
So why on earth would you want to beat BYU and then watch that win slowly fade in relevance if they were to lose more games.
Most Utah fans would agree with this. The others are too busy hiding in their mothers basements to understand this concept.
I wish the best for BYU in their game against Ole Miss and I wish the Utes the best in their game against Montana State.
Every single game is a must win game now days so every game is the most important one that you will play!
Go UTES!!!

I really don't see BYU accepting an invitation to the big 10/12 even if one comes. It is too soon to abandon the independent move. Belonging to a BCS conf. makes things easier but not necessarily better. I hope we stay independent and make it work.

Chrissy B predicts another BYU loss. Makes me feel good about BYU's chances.
Thanks Chrissy.

Utah is going to be down this year, and this game is going to show how bad their offense will be this year.

"Curious you don't mention my FOOTBALL predictions from last year.

They were scary close."

Yes, we particularly liked this football prediction:

"The Utes have at least 50% chance of going undefeated and reaching a BCS bowl game this year."

Don't understand why this is a statement game. BYU is a legendary program and we are playing arguably the worst team in the SEC. This is going to be a slaughter.

Thanks for being a classy Ute fan, there are sour apples in both fan bases, and this is one reason why some people don't want the rivalry anymore, I enjoy the game and atmosphere for a BYU vs Utah game, but most of the fans annoy me like no other. I am not a huge fan of Utah, but I to want them to succeed except for that one loss down south, but other than that its great to have football season starting again.

Looking at it objectively,...

Objectively? There is no objectivity right now at the start of a season. All stats were from last year where so many players are not on the teams anymore. You are looking at it SUBJECTIVELY...

Oh forgot it, I've had enough arguing with clueless cougars this summer. No more. I've got 3 more days then college football kicks off. Then reality plays out before our colored glasses.

My predictions (predictions are completely subjective!):
BYU loses to Ole Miss. Close game, but by 4th quarter Ole Miss pulls away for a win.

BYU loses to Texas. Not even close. Texas runs through the swiss cheese BYU defense.

BYU loses to Utah. Norm Chow shows up again to haunt BYU.

BYU wins against Central Florida. Finally a win. The cold and altitude doom Central Florida by 4th quarter.

BYU starts 1-3, Utah starts 4-0.

Bountiful, UT

The Ole Miss game is not a statement game. It is a must win / will win game. The Texas game is the only statement game on the schedule this year. Utah, UCF, Oregon State, TCU, Hawaii -- all good games against good teams. Those are the kind of games BYU should win - if they are setting their goals and aspirations where they have stated. They should also then turn around and cheer for those teams to have great seasons to show that they were games worthy of noting.

Otherwise, the Texas game sits as the lone "statement" game this year. A stellar showing in Austin is a must.

You got the numbers right, you just mixed up the names.

BYU starts 4-0, Utah starts 1-3.

The Utes are fortunate that they open the season at home against a Big Sky team, otherwise they'd be starting 0-4.

Orem, Utah

@ carabaoU,

I think your subjective predictions will be subjugated by the end of September.

BYU 4-0 start, Utah 1-3 start.

Utah's team has way more unanswered questions than BYU's team. That'll be the difference.

They're baaaaack! And the appearances of Chrissie B and Naval Vet bode well for the Cougs upcoming football season. Their forecasts were used by Cougar fans everywhere as an inverse barometer of the Cougar basketball teams fortunes this past season.

No doubt that old Hedgie will shortly come out of hibernation as well to provide us with some amusement in their eternal quest to rag on the Cougs!!

Going to be a great year and lay the foundation for an even greater year in 2012.

Go Cougs!!!

Herriman, Utah

ChrisB is "one-in-a-million." (With "correct" predictions running at about the same rate/percentage).

The thing I really can't understand, however, is the "I can't wait" statement. Especially since the predictions are so violently wrong (most of the time). It is one thing to make a wrong prediction, but certainly another to attempt embarrassment to oneself by saying, "I can't wait." Apparently self-respect is a trait that is not that important to some people.

Orem, Utah

Maybe BYU won't be in the Big 12 after it's all said and done...

NEW IDEA: With the current count of 68 BCS teams (considering TCU is BCS), it'd only take elevating one to three mid-majors to BCS status to get 5 geographically convenient 14-team BCS superconferences established:

West Region
-Arizona State
-BYU (or a mid-major if BYU remains independent)
-Oregon State
-Washington State
-undetermined mid-major from MWC or WAC

Midwest Region
-Iowa St
-Kansas St
-Oklahoma State
-Texas A&M
-Texas Tech

Great Lakes Region
-Michigan State
-Notre Dame (or a mid-major if ND remains independent)
-Ohio State

Northeast Region
-Boston College
-North Carolina
-North Carolina State
-Penn State
-Virginia Tech
-West Virginia

South Region
-Florida State
-Georgia Tech
-Miami (FL)
-Mississippi State
-South Carolina
-South Florida
-Wake Forest

Maybe teams here or there could switch, but it'd work out numerically.

My question is, does Chris B have the courage to come on here after a BYU win and admit he was wrong. My gut says no. I recall someone promising last year if BYU beat SDSU @ SDSU (bball) that he would retire from posting. Clearly not a man of his word.

Heber City, UT

Chris B you predict 90% of the time BYU will lose and 90% of the time you are wrong over the past 6 years.

Saint George, UT

Statement Game?

The UTEP game was also referred to as the "Statement Game".

This game will be another slaughter, just like the other "Statement Game".
