    BYU DUDE,

Don't say you will for sure win, it's just like claiming a pre-season national championship or heisman trophy. After looking at how well the cougies did last season and being beat up after your first few games, it's not looking so likely (but I did not say impossible).

But I suppose if Utah beats them, they go 6-6 or less, etc. it was just another "rebuilding year"?

Face it, for you cougs it's always a rebuilding year unless they win something. But now being Independent, they won't win anything because they have no conference championship trophy to win. National Championship hopes? Ha, not after a 6-6 season and with an unproven QB!!

"Danger I would jsut like the point out that the "improvement" BYU showed was agains the bottom tier of the MWC so that is a dubious claim at best."

And I would just like to point out that part of that improvement BYU showed came against Utah, a team that they came within 6 inches of beating on Utah's home field. Bottom tier of the MWC? You decide.

That improvement included (apparently I need to say it again) coming within 6 inches of beating Utah on their own turf. Some things are dubious, Danger's claim is not.

Your's is. And with horrible typos.

"And yet the Utes won. What does it say about a bYu defense that couldn't beat a QB so injured he needed surgery a few days later?"

hedgehog, did you know that Heaps was injured, too? The difference between an injured Heaps and an injured Wynn was that Wynn needed to be pulled out while one of the many reasons the Utes squeaked out the win was because Anae decided not to go for the TD, which by almost every indication was almost a guaranteed score (again, with an injured QB).

    ------------------------------

"Danger I would just like the point out that the "improvement" BYU showed was against the bottom tier of the MWC so that is a dubious claim at best." (with typo corrections)

I would like to point out that the improvement was as legitimate as can be. Anyone who watched the season saw huge improvement. It was because the offense finally got their act together and started clicking. Want proof? The receivers will be a great example. How many passes did they drop in the first half (while wide open, regardless of defense)? That was half the reason the offense couldn't get a first down.

best of luck to the Y. They have a really rough road to start the season with Mississippi State, Texas, OSU and Utah and will need to be healthy to have a chance in any of these games. If they are able start this season how they ended last season they will have a shot at winning all of the 4. Very important for the Y to have a 10 or 11 win season as an independent. Anything less will be a failure.

@PAC 12 loves U "And what has that National Championship done for byu?......Exactly!"

It's gotten us exposure (10 games on the ESPN networks this year) and relevance on the national scene. ESPN's VP of Programming Dave Brown was quoted as saying that BYU has a national brand and that the Cougars will always be successful.

What have your two BCS wins gotten you?

A fallback into the PAC 12 (congratulations) which is shown by the concessions the U had to make to get in (zero money first year, gradual build up to full membership, Chris Hill pandering to the PAC 12 hierarchy, etc).

1 game on ESPN2 this year, courtesy of the Cougs.

1 game on Versus against USC(ironically, Utah's first ever PAC 12 game is put on the MTN 2...you'd think that if people cared it would've been put on a more recognized channel).

In contrast, Colorado, with zero BCS wins on its resume, has 4 games on TV this year, including an ESPN2 contest with USC.

In short, nobody outside of SLC cares that Utah is in the PAC 12, including, apparently, the PAC 12.

But congrats on the AQ status :)

    Go Cougars!

    All these arguments are lame.

The only thing that matters now between the utes and BYU is the head to head game. PERIOD.

Who did what last year, or any time before (because in football, you're only as good as your last game), or who stats are what, or who got what award in the off season is silly. There is no way to compare the two. they don't play the same schedule, they don't play the same teams. they only play each other. that is why it is the only thing now that matters.

I lived with BYU's defeat last year. Even though I thought they played better almost the entire game. But they lost. No excuses.

I am also confident that BYU will beat utah this season. (as will ASU)

But I am willing to let them decide that on the field.

    And live on...

I just wish utah trolls would do the same.

Hedge! You don't get it. The utes won with the score, but lost the battle on the field. An injured QB? The ute backup was experienced, and the Cougs had its share of injuries also. Just see it as it is, and be honest about it! The Cougs clearly outplayed the utes and will again this year.

  • Starfarer Mesa, AZ
    Aug. 1, 2011 11:47 a.m.

    Two thoughts

First, to all the ute trolls. Have you ever lived anywhere else? Followed any other team? Listen to their fans? BYU fans are no different that fans of any team no matter how you try to paint them. Go over seas, BYU fans are only a fraction of soccer fans throughout the world in what they say about their team. So what? Why do you care? If A BYU fan, or player says "we are aiming for a NC," why is it your job to tell them they are insane? I thought you had a whopper of a deal with pac10.2, you're better than us. Why even bother? It just shows who can't let go.

Never read a ute article, never cared. the only time I care about utes is when they post stupid comments on BYU boards.

IF you are so great. IF you are so much better. IF you were so superior. IF you weren't so addicted to hating BYU, you could leave it alone.

    But you can't.

Second the only thing that matters is the head to head game. Then we will see who is better.

Meanwhile Heaps-as a true freshman on the road in both team's biggest rivalry game-drove all the way down the field in the closing minutes to put his team in a position to get the win. We didn't get the win, and I concede that loss to you (and the officials). However, considering where BYU was last year (rebuilding, 6 losses, unranked etc) and where Utah was (or thought they were-ranked in the top ten at one point, etc) I'll take the moral victory and hope for a real victory come September 17th.

BYU won out the end of their season (minus Utah-barely), showing massive improvement on both offense and defense-although against inferior competition. Utah ended the season...differently. I agree that those of us drinking blue cool-aide need to wait and see it on the field, but at least our trajectory gives us reason to hope :)

According to the Deseret News, The Y has the most talent and depth at every position out of all the teams in the country. I expect to see a good defense with strong linebacking, an alright line, and a mediocre secondary. The offense will have a good QB and a pretty good run game, and at least one big play receiver, most likely Hoffman. All things considered, BYU is likely to win 9 or 10 games and end up ranked somewhere between 20 and 25 at the end of the season.

They won't go undefeated, Jake Heaps will not win the Heisman, the defense will not be great, though it will be good. In short, this will be another cookie-cutter BYU football season, including all the hype in the preseason, a lot of talk from the fans, a nail-biter of a game with Utah, and probably a cute little motto having something to do with independence printed out on a lot of t-shirts.

Things will be a lot different this year...for one your 12th man won't be our Offensive Coordinator who had the greater hand in last years victory than Wynn could come up with on his own. Heaps will prevail and your defense will actually look worse than the frailty and the porosity that permeates the Utes O line. We know the D line and LBs are talented, experienced and deep. Hopefully Fuga and Pendleton will be at 100% when practice begins next week. Count on the front seven to be solid and anchor the defense. These are the type of defensive players we need to be able to compete with teams like Texas.

The DBs are talented and faster than historical BYU DBs, but they are inexperienced. If the DBs come together and execute at a high level, this could be the best defense BYU has ever had. We know Bronco will get the most out of them.

I'm espicially anxious to see how Preston Hadley and Joe Sampson perform. Sampson may end up being the fastest player on the team. This is the first time I've ever been excited about BYU's defense.

It's just tough for BYU to recruit D-Lineman because of the scheme. Because of the defense having a 3-man front, let's be honest, the defensive line in a 3-4 isn't really used to rush the quarterback, but mainly to stop the run and eat up blocks so that the linebackers can make all of the plays. The defensive ends have a chance to be playmakers at times, but they mostly have to be content with being role-players in the defense instead of playmakers. That doesn't make them any less important, but it probably means it is less fun. Mendenhall has still recruited excellent players there though. I hope the d-line continues to do well because they are still an important position group in the 3-4.

Depth at every position on Defense. Offense is in pretty good shape also. BYU has the potential to have a very good year. One more month.
    Go Cougars!

I hope the D proves to be the strength of the team this year, that would mean the Y would have a great year. Go Cougs.
