I hope the D proves to be the strength of the team this year, that would mean the Y would have a great year. Go Cougs.
Depth at every position on Defense. Offense is in pretty good shape also. BYU has the potential to have a very good year. One more month.
Go Cougars!
It's just tough for BYU to recruit D-Lineman because of the scheme. Because of the defense having a 3-man front, let's be honest, the defensive line in a 3-4 isn't really used to rush the quarterback, but mainly to stop the run and eat up blocks so that the linebackers can make all of the plays. The defensive ends have a chance to be playmakers at times, but they mostly have to be content with being role-players in the defense instead of playmakers. That doesn't make them any less important, but it probably means it is less fun. Mendenhall has still recruited excellent players there though. I hope the d-line continues to do well because they are still an important position group in the 3-4.
We know the D line and LBs are talented, experienced and deep. Hopefully Fuga and Pendleton will be at 100% when practice begins next week. Count on the front seven to be solid and anchor the defense. These are the type of defensive players we need to be able to compete with teams like Texas.
The DBs are talented and faster than historical BYU DBs, but they are inexperienced. If the DBs come together and execute at a high level, this could be the best defense BYU has ever had. We know Bronco will get the most out of them.
I'm espicially anxious to see how Preston Hadley and Joe Sampson perform. Sampson may end up being the fastest player on the team. This is the first time I've ever been excited about BYU's defense.
The D line is the heart and sole of the defense. My hope is the 3 down lineman will lead the team in tackles. Remember the D line of 1985? Three down lineman and they led the team in tackles. These guys on the D line with their depth and talent can do so again. First game is 5 weeks from today (Saturday in AK).
Go Cougars.
No doubt this makes for even more anticipation to the upcoming season. I am proud of the defensive players mentioned that have maintained good standing with the University and the Honor code, way to honor your word. Now go out there and beat some Ole Miss, Texas and Utah heads in. I can wait to see it.
Don't forget Kona Schwenke and Hau'oli Jamora, the two four star DE's from Hawaii that de-committed last minute in 2009. It wouldn't have hurt to have them in reserve this season.
Wow, with a defense that's better than anyone has seen in decades, Heiseman QB, fastes Wr in the nation.....Y isn't the Y a top 20 team?
Same preseason story year after year after year.
BYU Defense could be really good this year!! Hebron Fanguapo will be really good, transferring to BYU from USC. Go Cougars!
Yawn, same old story. Paper bag defense.
Lots of exposure, Worlds greatest football team. Most history. Everyone loves the Cougars. Heisman trophies year after year. National championships every other year.
What else?
HH and KU, slow day on Utah articles, can't find anyone over there.
Got to admit the d line is looking better than they have in some time. With the o doing what it does, a good defense will make the y very good. I won't go so far as to say an nc, but they will win a lot more than they loose. Mark it down.
Hope the u does good, as well as the aggies. Need the exposure to bring all the programs up with national attention on ESPN. Should help everyone.
Cont.
Heaps vs. Wynny = It's actually sad how bad the QB situation at Utah is. Wynn would be third string at BYU.
P.S Don't quit after losing to BYU like the Ute's did against BSU in the Vegas Massacre.
Look at Utah's D Front and you get an idea of what byU's defense could be some day.
Just say'n.
Utecounty,
I agree.
I can only imagine the adjetives dick would be using if bYu actually had a D-line like the Utes. No doubt he would be talking multiple National Championships with the real possiblity of not giving up a single point this season.
utahcountyute
Utah's defensive line will have to play against BYU's deep and talented offensive line; whereas, BYU's defensive line will have to play against Utah's paper offensive line.
Advantage: BYU
btw, take a look at BYU's QBs and you get an idea of what U never have been and never will be at QB.
Re: KamUte
The same "paper bag" defense your tearing down made your team look silly last year. 17 points? What will defenses that are actually good do to your team this year?
Mussing
Your current QB hasn't done jack so there's not much to compare to:)
Besides, I would take the best defense over the "best" QB any day.
Can't wait till Sept 17th.
2 out of 3, scoreboard and BLOCKED!
Go Utes!
Can't wait until Sept 17 to shut up all these arrogant Ute fans. Truly little brother in every sense of the word. Ute fans read more BYU articles than they do BYU articles (at least they comment more on the BYU articles)
Woops, I meant, they comment way more on BYU articles than they do on Utah articles.
@utahcountyute "Your current QB hasn't done jack so there's not much to compare to:)"
That's right, I forgot that Jordan Wynn has done SO much more in 2 years than Jake Heaps has done in 1 (roll my eyes).
Not sure why Utes are crowing so much about their D line being better than BYU's. Obviously we'll wait to see how it turns out in the season, but there's as much talent at D line this year at BYU as at Utah. Watch for Tuiloma this year...guy's gonna be a beast! I also wouldn't be surprised if BYU put Loni Fangupo at D End to spell Putnam and Manumaleuna...they did that for a few series during the spring game and he did a great job.
Anyhoo, should be a fun season.
@utahcountyute
3 out of 5, Harline is STILL open (you'd think somebody would cover him by now), Collie on 4th and 18, and Andrew George...oh the list goes on and on.
Go Cougars!
