The u can only hope that Oregon, USC and others get the apparent sanctions coming and get to the championship game because all the others are ineligable. How long before the u finds itself presdsured into the pac10 game. Agents, scouts, if you want to win in the 10 you have to play the games and the game. All part of the bcs, its ok though, just ask the sugar bowl, ohio state, the fiesta bowl and money. Boy is it showing now.

But wow we are part of the bcs!

Mark it down, the bcs will be history, three years.

Pacificblue55 asked the question "Why is there so much interest in BYU from Ute fans? Shouldn't they direct the hatred toward USC/Oregon/Stanford or whoever from the PAC12 that's going to be their new rival now?"

There is a pretty simple answer; lack of experience. Rivalries are built over years and decades and right now the only "friend" that Utah has is BYU. They don't have a relationship with anyone in their new league and more important, they don't have the respect of anyone in the PAC12 at this point.

Utah will learn to hate their new opponents the old fashioned way. They will earn it. The first time that the Stanford band takes a shot at them because of their state, or religion, or Cal protests their game, and after they have been soundly beaten by USC and Cal and Stanford and Oregon and even WSU, they will realize the enormity of their new situation. Then they can start to build respect and rivalries. In about 20 or 30 years they will be ready to leave their old friends behind. Until then, we are stuck with the Utes and their trash talk.

Pre season hype rarely lives up to the billing. False praise can lead to false hope, I want this team to win and win the big games they have scheduled this year. No body wins anything with out playing the games so lets play ball, and leave all the pre season lame name game alone until some one actually does something to win it, nominees are nothing but beauty queens waiting for there lucky shot. You gotta put up or shut up.

What is it with you guys? Both Wynn and Heaps on a pre-season watch list, how is this not a good thing? Will either of them win an award? I can wait, and if either of them have the kind of season that earns them that kind of recognition, I can live with that too.

Turbin can also get stuffed on 4th and short by Andrew Rich and get injured for an entire season, and get more than 10 carries per game.

Florida State's defense would shut him down, too.

Can Turbin return kicks or play slot receiver either? Didn't think so.

JJ is a great back and an even better person who has never received the respect he deserves. I would easily call him the best back in the state.

Why is there so much interest in BYU from Ute fans? Shouldn't they direct the hatred toward USC/Oregon/Stanford or whoever from the PAC12 that's going to be their new rival now? If they are at a different level why continue beating on a small school like BYU? It's time to think big and rise up to the new competition. You can probably beat the some of the weaker teams in the NFL with the talent and coaching that you have. Don't waste your time looking for newspaper articles about BYU.

wwookie - Come on. BYU's run game has been so solid in past years they have felt comfortable suspending some of their best running backs (I can think of three off hand, but if I name them D-News will block my comment). What other team has ever had a big enough cushion to do that?

I always laugh at watch lists. They are watching every player. You can't tell me that if a freshman comes in and runs for 250 yards per game they are going to deny him the honour because he was not on a watch list. "That kid had five sacks a game. Too bad he isn't eligible because he didn't make the watch list last summer."

Why are we commenting on football during Tour de France season anyway?

Aggie84 - Thought we were over the Nelson discussions. When he transferred, nobody would have guessed that BYU would start a freshman quarterback. It looked like his timing was perfect, even after they picked up the Heaps commitment. So the answer to your question is when he transferred, he was in excellent position to start two years. That was a reasonable gamble, it was just as likely that the Aggies would pick up a star QB while he was away. A shame really, I was excited to watch him play. With two o-linemen on watch lists this is shaping up to be a great year for BYU Quarterbacks (as long as a tight end steps up early in the year). For the record, Nelson is going to get a couple of starts this season. Heaps is going to get hit too many times early in the schedule. He will also get plenty of clean up time later in the season when the schedule softens (after Utah State of course). We can both watch him play.

"We all know BYU doesn't do squat with their run game."

Even back in the days before BYU became a nationally recognized program, BYU had a great running back.

Eldon Fortie led the nation in rushing the year BEFORE LaVell became BYU's head coach, and unlike any player from Utah, BYU has actually won the Doak Walker Award.

U talk the talk, but U've never walked the walked.

  • Bluto Sandy, UT
    July 16, 2011 10:41 a.m.

    @carbaoU and other Ute trolls.

You've named Utes who have made the watch list. Now share with us how many Utes have ever won any of these awards.

These Awards have "actually" been won by BYU players.

    Heisman Trophy

Davey O'Brien Trophy 4 times (more than any other school)

    Sammy Baugh Trophy 7 times

    Outland Trophy 2 times

    Doak Walker Trophy

Throw in an NFL MVP (twice), a Super Bowl MVP and 7 Hall of Famers, and really, is Utah even in this discussion?

Again Utes, BYU has been there and done that, the U never has!

  • TrueBlue Orem, UT
    July 16, 2011 9:10 a.m.

BYU is going to have a stellar passing game this year, so if JJ has a good enough year to be a Doak Walker finalist, BYU's offense is going to be unstoppable.

Frankly, I'll be satisfied with 150-200 yards rushing per game split between two or three running backs. That would be enough to keep opposing defenses honest and create space for the passing game.

My biggest concern is at TE. If BYU's TEs start producing, BYU's offense is going to be loaded across the board.

"We all know BYU doesn't do squat with their run game."

Ever heard of Willis, Jenkins, Staley or Unga?

BYU's run game gets over looked because of their stellar passing attack. However, history shows otherwise. Pull up the stats and you'll find consistent 100 yard performances by individuals and 1,000 yard performances for the season.

The chances of DiLuigi winning the Doak Walker award are slim, because you'll see a repeat performance of last year's stellar running game with duties being shared by DiLuigi, Juice, and Kariya. The three combined will be put on a clinic since each of their styles are so different. Look for the combined effort to be well over 1,500 yards. To use your word, that is "squat".

The only questions for 2011's running game will be whether or not highly touted RM Adam Hine gets into the action or if he redshirts and whether Manoa Pikula sees action at FB in his Freshman campaign.

I love the talk about expansion of trophy cases. JJ Di Whomever isn't even the best running back in the state, let alone the country. I believe Robert Turbin takes that honor this year. Just because it isn't in the Cougarette err.. Deseret News doesn't mean it isn't happening. I saw a billboard going up down in Provo today. A picture of Jake Heaps and the tagline: Delusion: Pass it on.

Very surprised with Luigi. We all know BYU doesn't do squat with their run game. Even if he was the best running back in the nation, no one would know it because BYU would never give him a chance to show it.

Heaps is a legitimate selection, especially given how he was improving drastically near the end of the season. I'm excited to watch his games, and with the exception of one early season game, will be hoping he can have success in the W column.

Turbin can run circles around Di Luigi, Turbin will out rush Luigi by 600 yards this year easy. What did he do last year against the Aggie? btw there are Aggies on all the lists also just like Utes. I respect the Utes and their progaram, I was treated with great respect two years ago in SLC. We got smashed but fun. Turbin had that 96 yard dash but other than that run he was held in check.

Every year since I've lived here, I've had to endure the usual "we're going all the way this year", "this is our year for another championship", and "BCS here we come" drone with the same outcome. BYU will win 7 games. They can't compete at that level. Ole Miss, Oregon State, TCU, and Texas will embarrass them (will maybe Ole Miss won't embarrass, but will win). Heaps is good but not of the caliber of the great QBs. TCU and Texas will bottle Luigi up. I don't want to be a buzzkill, but those are the facts. BYU cannot recruit like other schools and Mendenhal is just a good mid level coach. Just the plain hard facts. Sorry if it offends.

College Football News descibes it as "prestigious". U describes it as a "waste of time". Hmmm, who should I believe?

I cannot tell you how many times I have seen the same thing from some of the u fans out there. Let's not just spin this to try to make it look like it comes from just the Y fans.

Just look at one particular individual who thinks he is still in High School and writing a research paper with all his "footnotes". The problem is that most, upwards of 95% of his quotes come from VERY biased sources. They are not facts or even close to facts, but because he has his "footnote", he thinks that somehow it is a fact and will stick by it even if it is proven wrong.

Chaz Walker - Lombardi (Off. & Def Linemen, Linebackers)
Tony Bergstrom - Outland (Interior Linemen)
    DeVonte Christopher - Biletnikoff (WR)
