Should BYU fans be happy for Utahs success in gaining entry in to the Pac-12? Absolutely, since this now pulls a major moniker off their back and allowed independence and a likely invitation to the Big-12 that they had back in 1993 to be accepted when it comes around. By the late 1980s BYU wanted to leave the WAC, the SWC was starting to fall apart, but who would BYU partner with at the time? Utah wasnt even on the radar since they were just coming out of two decades or mediocrity in college athletics. Utah fans should thank BYU for getting them there!

On the other hand should the MWC be celebrating the loss of BYU? No way! Utah State fans especially should not be happy about this one since if BYU stayed put then the MWC would have followed through and stabilized their league alignment.

What do you think the odds are the MWC will "promote" the bYu move to independence?

I'd say 10,000 to 1.

Burning bridges falling down, falling down, falling down. Burning bridges falling down all threw the land.

"Utah fans should thank BYU for getting them there!"

In 1987, Utah Pres. Chase Peterson and A.D. Chris Hill put forth a plan, to make the UofU more appealing to the Pac-10 should they decide to expand again. The plan included bolstering the U's academic reputation in add'n to improving the Athletic Dept.

Utah should thank fmr-Presidents Peterson, Smith, and Machen for the meteoric rise in the U's academic profile as one of the top 100 universities in the world.

Utah should thank fmr-Head Coaches Majerus, McBride, and Meyer for the meteoric rise in the U's athletic programs, and Whittingham and the Marsdens for the sustainability of our successes.

Utah should thank the athletes of the subsequent 5 Men's Sweet-16, 2 Elite-8, 1 Final Four/NC game teams, 2 BCS Bowl teams, 22 Super-Sixes, and 4 gymnastics titles.

But your cougs are due no approbations for our university's elevation to the Pac-12, and the only gratitude you may be afforded is a great big hearty thanks for rolling over for us on our way to the BCS back in 2004 and 2008.

SLC BYU Fan, too funny. Are you serious? Utah earned its way into the PAC 12 by being a major research university, by having the 12th winningest NCAA mens basketball program, the being the original BCS buster, and twice overall BCS bowl winner (by a large margin) in football; BYU has done nothing for the U of U expect be a rival. And the part about the Big-12 inviting BYU in 1993; give me a break; never happened. Have you guys really stooped to making things up? It never ceases to amaze me.

Of course the MWC is happy to celebrate the Utes leaving the conference. Utah football was only occassionally good and even the bottom dwellers of the conference could count on beating the Utes. Utah basketball is a disaster. And, except for a couple of women's sports, the rest of Utah's athletic programs have never been competitive.

On the other hand, Craig Thompson wouldn't have celebrated the Cougars if they'd won another football national championship. In basketball, CT was a ghost during Jimmer-mania. CT's love/hate relationship with BYU was interesting. On the one hand, he never lifted a finger to help his flagship program. On the other hand, he did everything he possibly could to try to sabotage BYU's departure from the MWC because he knew how important BYU was to the conference.

Good luck to the Utes in the PAC 12. It'll be fun being able to beat the Utes and a PAC 12 opponent in the same game. See you in September.

The no-BCS-bowl-busting cougars were most definitely NOT the flagship institution in the MWC. The ONLY sport you dominated in the MWC was track and field. You frantic and emotional cougar fans need to understand that it's football that drives the athletic dept. That's why Holmoe sabotaged his entire athletic dept. by sticking his programs in the WCC. He did it for the football team.

The flagship football programs in the MWC were Utah and TCU. There are 4 BCS bowls between us. It is now TCU and Boise St, where there are 4 BCS bowls between them. Your program was better than UNLV, Wyoming, and New Mexico, but compared to Utah and TCU (and Boise St. for that matter), you were an also-ran. And the only reason your moved to independence won't destroy your football program was because you were never going to play in a BCS bowl game anyway.

This is too good! y people on "Red Roundup" trying to belittle the mighty Ute school and program. Have you nothing going on in "Blue Roundup" that will make you happy or that you can cheer for? Apparently not!!

Ute success is really getting under the skins of y people.

Go Utes! Go Crimson!

SLC BYU fan,

"a likely invitation to the Big-12."

Maybe. But what we KNOW right now is the Pac 10 and Big 12 just went through a round of conference membership realignment. Neither conference invited BYU. The Big 12, in fact, gave up their lucerative football championship game rather than invite BYU and some other team to get back to the requisite 12 teams.

I am not saying or implying that BYU doesn't have a solid athletic program. They do, and have for years. But talking about rumored "almost invitations" from eighteen years ago and unlikely invitations just around the corner makes you sound desperate.

Naval Vet,

Its good to see you back, back at your usual self. Flagship programs win conference championships. Apparently you didn't see the article recently about which team dominated the MWC for the 11 years it was in it? Winning 42% of all the championships in the league...It certainly wasn't Utah...it wasn't TCU, it was BYU. Of course the Hair Mr. Thompson wouldn't give BYU the time of day. BYU just ended the MWC as a viaable player in the college football pecking order. Yes, Utah's departure to the PAC10.2 initiated it, but the lousy TV deal w/ the MTN, and Thompson's lack of intestinal fortitude could never get the kind of deal that it was supposed to have been for the MWC.

Yes, it was BYU the started the MWC, got the TV deal going as brokered by Dave Checketts, but when the Hair could seal the deal, that was the beginning of the end for BYU's interest in staying in the MWC. I'll bet that that was what began the planning for and eventual construction of the new state-of-the-art broadcast center...

MichiganCoog
Cottonwood Heights, UT

...that was just completed, for BYU to make it a go on its' own in Independance. The Hair's endorcement is just another dig on his part, to express his hate for BYU's decision to leave. I'm sure he has a dart board in his home, w/ a big blue "Y" in the middle of it that he must pepper with darts for hours at a time.

For all we Coug fans, good riddance Mr. Thompson, and the pathetic MTN, MWC and the lack of exposure on TV. Hello ESPN, hello 7 national prime-time slots this coming fall, hello to our newly found Independance, no more little yappy dogs, hanging off of our BYU coat-tails...Finally, good luck in your quest for the Las Vegas bowl my dear UTE fans. You see, if it wasn't for BYU, the BCS never would have happened. U ask why? Because when BYU won the National Championship in 1984, that got this whole BCS muck started...They spurned BYU's chance at a significant New Years day bowl in 1996, but when that next opportunity comes in the very near future...BYU will win won again!

You can bet the MWC won't promote BYU's independence move because they see it as BYU dissing them, whereas they see Utah's acceptance into the Pac-12 as validation that the MWC DID have a BCS-worthy team.

However, unlike Thompson would like to think, it doesn't mean (after TCU leaves) that the MWC has any team even close to BCS-worthy. But, he'd like to think so.

Thompson's dreaming if he thinks the MWC will one day qualify as an AQ conference. With Boise State's NCAA issues, the MWC's credibility is sunk.

BYU Jimmered the MWC on its independence move!

Good riddance to the black hole mtn network.

Utah's entire football history is a two-trick pony (2004 and 2008), that will never be repeated.

Kyle lost to every team in the MWC, which is why he only managed to win one MWC championship and only had one Top 15 finish despite his BCS win.

Bronco never lost to Wyoming, Colorado State, New Mexico, or UNLV (remember Utah 0 UNLV 27?), which is why he won two MWC championships and had three Top 15 finishes.

Utah is headed to middle of the PAC mediocrity. You know it, and so does everyone else.

BYU is headed back to national prominence.

Two programs headed in opposite directions (see last half of 2010).

"Utah's entire football history is a two-trick pony (2004 and 2008), that will never be repeated."

I'm assuming you referred to these two seasons because Utah was undefeated in each and had BCS invitations/wins? Based on the same criteria, byu would be a "one-trick pony" based on it's only undefeated season in 1984. It hasn't come close to repeating and has never been invited to a BCS game.

FYI, Bronco has had two AP top 15 finishes, not three.

Utah and byu have both finished in the top 5 twice in their program's history. byu has four top 10 finishes to Utah's three. Kyle has a #2 finish while Bronco has a #12 finish as his best.

I'm sure your program is headed to better records with cupcake schedules. While Utah is playing 10 BCS teams, byu will play only four. byu will also play the following powerhouse midmajor teams this year: Idaho, Idaho State, Utah State, Central Florida, San Jose State and New Mexico State. ESPN viewers are lining up to watch those teams play your 6-6 cougs.

Midmajor forever..... enjoy it.

Funny. There's always enough stats from the past for either side to zing the other.

Let's just enjoy watching two teams from the great state of Utah go out and pave some glory for themselves.

I anticipate that Utah will do well in the Pac-12 as time rolls on, and that BYU will do quite well as an independent.

If the two schools can keep games going against each other every year, bragging rights will still be hot and heavy.

Bronco took over a program coming off of three straight losing seasons.
Kyle took over a program coming off an undefeated BCS season.

Bronco, in his first 6 years has almost as many AP Top 25 finishes (4) as Utah has in its entire history (5).

If you read what I posted you will see that I was correct, Bronco has two AP top 15 finishes.

FYI, Utah has finished in the top 25 seven times. Perhaps you meant that Utah has five top 25 finishes this century? byu has the same with their highest ranking @ #12. Utah has two top 5 finishes during this century.

In comparing Kyle and Bronco you failed to mention Kyle leading in BCS invitations and wins: 1-0. Kyle also earned million more for the MWC than Bronco.

Again as follows:

BYU = Independent
utah = Dependent

Enjoy your dependence celebration.
